Cast of characters - it was always about the bets

Having gone to bed early and combined with game day resulted in me being up early. The first thing I did was check the weather by turning on the TV and I spent 15 minutes watching The Weather Chanel. There was no chance that they would report on the weather in Hershey but there was eventually a report on Harrisburg and that would be a high of 42 and a low of 29 and dry. That would be perfect football weather. I called JJ and and he answered with "dude when do you sleep?" I laughed and said well how about I pick you up at 7:00 and we can do breakfast at Eat N Park and then go straight to school. Then I said dude the temperature at game time will be in the 30's. He laughed and said so 2 pair of thermals. I said later dude and hung up. I wanted to check the paper and when I went to the house it wasn't outside. I went inside and found dad reading the paper and drinking coffee. I poured myself a cup and sat down and dad, without saying a word, pushed the sports in my direction. Naturally there was a big article about the game. Basically it said that we were two evenly matched teams and that it would be a low scoring very physical game and the predictions were all over the place. We were given an edge on defense and they had an advantage on offense.

When I finished reading dad looked at me and said, good morning. I see you are in your vintage game day mood. Mike, that's actually good to see as it has been missing most of the year. Then he laughed and said son, I actually set the alarm so that I would beat you to the paper. Mike, I just wanted to say that I hope you have a good game tonight and that you have fun and that I'm proud of you in so many ways it's hard to list them. He got up gave me a hug and said enjoy the experience. It was actually pretty emotional and he, for the first time in a very long time, simply blew me away. On the short walk to my place I realized that in many ways our relationship had changed and we were both letting go. We were still close but in a different way and I thought more equal. However this "throw back" discussion was more than cool. I was determined to use some of my upcoming free time with dad. I grabbed my xtra clothes and other shit and threw the bags on the back seat and drove the 4 houses to get JJ.

I pulled in the driveway hit the horn and JJ appeared with a bag and shaking his head. He tossed his bag in the back climbed in and said lets go before things get stranger. JJ was quiet for most of the ride then he asked MJ, how important is all this to the rents? JJ, so your dad had a chat with you and it up set you? MJ, it blew me away, how much I changed and how proud he was and to play hard and have fun. Then he asked if had changed enough to go to the Air Force Academy. We both laughed and he smiled and said well I guess not. I smiled and said JJ, they don't care about the game. They just want what we want and I want to win but no matter what the sun will rise tomorrow and we we move on with our lives. JJ, it's a big game because of the drama around it but it's just a football game. MJ, I know all that shit, let's eat. JJ, did your dad mess with your head? MJ, very much so but in a good way. Breakfast was the buffet and was a lot to eat. On the way out I grabbed a coffee to go and we were off to school.

This was different as we were packing our pads and helmets and large bags were at our lockers. We backed both light and dark jerseys and the buss were different. So different that we needed two of them and damn they were comfortable. I knew this had to have cost a lot and I was wondering where all the cash came from. At our lockers there was a list of buss and roommate assignments JJ and I were as he had indicated roommates and I was very happy to be on the same buss. I also noticed that the QB's were on the other bus as was Coach Tom. Coach Weston and the defensive coordinator were on the bus with us. I was the first one to toss my bag in the luggage compartment and got on the bus and went directly to my seat in the very back. The only difference was that the seat was so comfortable I knew it would result in a nap.

JJ was a while getting on and I had already had my Walkman on when he sat down beside me he reached over and gently pulled out my ear bud and asked Mj, are you going to listen to that shit the entire trip? I laughed and said nope, I'll be listening to some of your shit as well. With that I turned off my tunes and asked dude, did you even charge your unit? There was a loud cheer outside the bus when we started to move and I was thinking shit, this is just nuts. We turned left, onto RT 51 heading south and it wasn't long before we were on Interstate 70 heading east. That merged onto the PA Turnpike and it would be hours before that changed. We would cross the Susquehanna River just outside Harrisburg and then RT 322 to Hershey. It wasn't complicated but 3-1/2 hours with no stops. JJ and I spent the time talking about school, the girls and VT and what we might expect once we were there. We made a decision that we would show up there mid July and be back and forth till camp started. We were really thinking that we would pretty much be there full time in mid July but we would have the new Jet to get back and forth. Then I reminded JJ that well before that we needed to find an apartment that would work for a lot of things and that would need to be on the DL and Sean and a few others would help with that. JJ said MJ, the only way that happens is 50/50 on the rent. I smiled and replied, absolutely. Then the subject turned to the game and JJ thought he would have his hands full as the QB was deadly throwing short passes but was awful with anything over 25 yards. Then he said MJ, I need to legally take one of the receivers out. I just shook my head and said dude, this isn't Texas. He looked at me and smiled then said, well I did say legally.

At that point I put my classical music on and either zoned out or more likely fell asleep. What brought me back to reality was the bus slowing down and turning. I looked at JJ and he was fast asleep. I nudged him and said JJ we about to stop. A look around we were at a big rest stop and we were told 15 minutes and I knew it would be 30 minutes. The sign on the building read Sideling Hill and I knew we were past halfway in fact we were about 90 minutes away at the most. I went inside used the men's room and bought a coffee and was back on the bus just under 15 minutes and JJ wasn't very much behind me and I checked the time and it was 10:50. Just as we were all on the buss and starting up again I saw our other bus pull up. I was glad to be on our way as if we all arrived at the hotel at the same time it would be more than a zoo.

The ride got more and more quiet as we got closer and I didn't know what to make of that either everyone was nervous, scares shitless or simply ready for work. Only time would tell. Once we pulled into the Econo Lodge parking lot Coach told us it was about 12:30 and that in the lobby we would be given our room assignments lunch and breakfast tickets. Then there was the standard lecture; besides the team rule about smoking all the rooms are non smoking; no females and no drinking; be polite and don't make a mess. There is a team meeting be in the lobby at 3:30. Inside seated at a table in the lobby was Ruth. We'll lined up and JJ and I were 4th. When it was our turn she smiled and said guys a bit of info four you on your floor is also the Principal and Coach Tom. There will be school board people and I stuck them with the band. I said thanks and she said Mike, I had to deal with a bunch of king sized beds and I put you and JJ in one of those rooms as I knew you would bitch. I just smiled and said no problem and as we were on the second floor we took the stairs. JJ laughed and said that's perfect as we won't have to pretend we used both beds. I laughed at that used the key card to unlock the door threw my bag in the corner under the window, kicked my shoes off and threw myself on the bed. JJ grabbed the remote and started flipping through channels and that went on and on and I finally asked, what you looking for? MJ, a football game, any game. I laughed and said well the Pros don't play on Saturday and no one else is playing. JJ turned the TV off and we were just laying there and he asked if I wanted to go for a quick run? I replied that I would like that but there are about 20 adults here who would shit their pants if they saw us doing that. Then I remembered the candy and said JJ, I should have a package at the front desk, I'll be right back.

Downstairs in the lobby it was a total cluster fuck as Ruth was replaced by a band parent, there was no line and the band director was going crazy trying to restore order and making things worse, if that was possible. At the desk there were 2 dudes in their early 20's and I said, good afternoon I'm Mike Simmons and I should have a package that was delivered from Chocolate World. One of the guys said yup, it came late this morning and we have it set aside. In fact once this had settled down we would have brought it up to your room. It was two boxes one very thin and a larger square box. This time I took the elevator one floor and when I got to the room JJ was in the shower. I almost joined him and it was a good thing I didn't as there was a knock on the door and it was Coach Weston. I simply said, would you like to come in? He said Mike for a minute and once inside he looked around and asked so where is JJ? Coach he is in the shower, so what's up? Well I just wanted to thank you for all you did this year and I know it wasn't always pleasant or easy as there was a lot we could have done better. I smiled and said Coach that means a lot to me and it was a lot like work this year. Just the JJ appeared wearing just Boxer briefs and he said, shit I didn't know we had company. Coach laughed and said well I'm just making a few rounds and talking to people who are important to me and JJ you are definitely on that list. Not only for how well you fit in but for all the work you managed to do with the QB situation. You tried very hard with Sam and Jim was a walking disaster and Wyatt idolizes you, dude all that matters, thanks. He started to leave and stopped and said, have fun tonight all the work is done and he left closing the door behind him. JJ looked at me and I said, he was telling us he isn't coaching tonight, well he will be there and the designated Head Coach but Coach Tom is running the show and he knows enough that he won't get in the way. There will be a lot of changes next year and I for one am glad and very glad that none of it will be my problem.

I checked the time and stripped and jumped in the shower. I dressed in jeans and a school polo shirt and then made sure a VT shirt was in my bag for after the game. JJ and I grabbed my candy and our bags and went to the lobby for the team meeting. It turned out that it wasn't much of a meeting but an early light dinner. Dinner was a box lunch consisting of a great ham and cheese sandwich, an apple, a bag of chips and a cookie. Then we had a choice of water or soda. For the first time all day things started to loosen up and I thought it was that the routine was starting to feel normal. What was important it seemed like everyone was in a good place. We simply hung out as a team until coach Weston reappeared and said, saddle up its show time. There were a few good natured groans and we got on the busses for a 30 minute trip to the stadium.

In the locker room I grabbed the locker that was furthest from the door and set the box with the large Hershey Bar in the back of the locker. I looked around and the place was small and very old but also real clean and it was obvious that it was cleaned after the afternoon game. I opened my bag and put on thermals and game pants and pads. My upper thermals were short sleeved and I grabbed the box of 50 Hershey Bars for the other team and went outside. I set the box under what would be our bench and sat down. I was immediately joined by JJ and we looked at each other and smiled. It was earlier than usual and they hadn't let anyone in and sitting in an empty and silent stadium was a bit different. I was just looking around when two security officers came up behind us and said guys, we need to check that box under the bench. I politely said well that belongs to me and it is a gift for the other team. The officers laughed and one of them said, well now we have two reasons to check that box. I smiled and said well it is 50 Hershey Bars so feel free. They checked and said have a good game and went on their way. JJ was laughing and said damn, I'm rooming with a suspected bomber. Then we both laughed and went inside.

Inside JJ and I found the entire team sitting there and Coach Tom said nice of you two to join us. I just kept walking to my locker and JJ said well coach we have done this this way for 15 games and if you change thing up it would be nice if you actually told us, I'll be with you shortly. I was quickly back and just stood there looked at Josh and he simply stood up and went to the field for warmups. I simply followed and JJ was right behind us. Coach Weston and Coach Tom were talking and Coach Tom came over to JJ and and said JJ, I didn't know about your routine. I heard JJ say I didn't know you were in charge and that the routine had changed and MJ had been doing that for 30 games. Coach Tom asked, so what do I need to do to fix this? JJ laughed and said talked to Wales, I'm just here to play football so you and Chuck figure out who is in charge and let us know before we ignore both of you. Warmups continued and we were well into it now and it was obvious that we were running the show. At some point some coach was going to have to tell us when to get off the field. All of a sudden JJ yelled BACK TO THE BUNK HOUSE and everyone jogged to the locker room. Once we were all there JJ looked at the Coaches and asked, which one of you is charge. There was no answer and JJ looked at Jim and asked Jim, are you man enough to call plays? Jim simply replied ABSOLUTELY. JJ said cool we are all set and MJ and I will deal with the defense. Then Coach Tom said you guys are forgetting something, you need a school adult to be on the sideline. Just then Doc. :Johnson appeared and said, well I'm a responsible adult who works at the school and I'm on the sidelines. Then he said Chuck, if you want to continue to be the AD your ass better be there as well. Then the offensive coordinator said he will work with Jim. Then Doc said I don't care who comes but I have the final say and what these kids say matters. Now let's go kick some ass.

At this point there was nothing left to do but play the game but on the way to the field I went up to Coach Weston and said Coach, nice talk earlier with JJ and me, how about right now you step the fuck up and fix this and for 48 minutes be the dude you were last year. Coach just looked and me and went up to Coach Tom and said, we won't be needing you tonight then to Doc Johnson and he said get off my sidelines and we will hash this out Monday. The officials came over for the coin toss and I looked at Coach Weston a asked, Tails and defer? Mike, please. I found it funny that Wyatt was there so I told him what to call and damn we won the toss and he deferred. Back on the sideline Coach told us to pick our spots and to blitz as much as possible and then added never JJ, he needs to cover. Rod blasted the kickoff through the end zone and we were all set. Their first play was right out of the movies we had seen, play action and a short pass a heard behind the line of scrimmage and the receiver got the ball and JJ at the exact same time and I heard the hit on the other side of the field. It was a 1 yard gain and the kid was slow getting up but jogged back to the huddle. I would have bet my new land that the play was going to be to my side and we did the linebacker "I"and Chad was moved to the left side. Chad was to blitz and Josh and I would deal with the blockers and receiver. They broke the huddle and as they lined up JJ yelled Red. Yelling any color meant a run. I knew it was around the end and was still sure it was my side. The play went off and it was indeed to my side and Josh wiped out two blocker and I went right at the runner and drove my shoulder right into his stomach. Somehow he hung on to the ball but just laid there as the hit had knocked the wind out of him. As I was getting up the Line Judge asked if we always hit this hard? I smiled and said, just setting the tone and sending a message. He smiled and said, just keep it legal. I replied, always and jogged to our huddle. It was now 3rd down and 9 yards to a first down. At this point it was obvious that they would not run and it needed to be a longer pass or a screen pass. They broke the huddle and Josh and I were blitzing. Sure enough it was a pass and the QD dropped back further in the pocket and I ran over the guard and just at the QB was releasing the ball I jumped and I know I slightly touched the ball and fell on the QB. I had no idea what was happening and there was a loud grown and I knew that wasn't good. Suddenly there was a loud cheer and Max the Corner Back had blasted the receiver and the ever present JJ fell on it.

There was naturally a TV time out with the change of possession and we were gathered together and JJ said MJ, don't tip another pass I had that intercepted as it was overthrown til you hit it. Jim gave Wyatt three plays and Wyatt didn't have a great response. In fact his response was ugly. He looked right at Jim and said I'll run the first two plays and it will result in third and five and either you get with it or I'll simply change the play and he jogged back on the field. In the huddle Wyatt called the play that Jim had given him and said real quick on 1 so be set. We were lined up and Wyatt walked up got under center and quickly said hut and the ball was snapped and handed to Todd who was stood straight up and we were lucky there wasn't a loss. Wyatt was the same in the huddle and called the play Jim had sent in and again he said very quickly on 1. Wyatt was the same as the first play and I would bet that if they showed the two plays at the same time you couldn't tell them apart. This time the hand off went to me and should have gone off left tackle and there was nothing there and I bounced outside and managed 6 tough yards. Back in the huddle Wyatt called a screen pass to Todd and then said on 3 and don't move early. We broke the huddle and it was all I could bo not to laugh. Wyatt had revised the play and was hoping not to run it. Under center the same way as the previous times and yelled hut. The other team blew across the line and flags flew and we had a first down. Play continued and we were moving the ball and then we were hit with a holding penalty which was 10 Yards. We were eventually 4th and 6 on the 23 and Coach sent in the field goal team. It would be a 39 yard attempt which was long but well within Rod's range and he simply nailed it and it would have been good from 50. We kicked off and they were on the 20 and managed a couple of first downs and punted. However we continued being very physical and were hoping that would make things easier later in the game. We hadn't done much either as all their good players were linemen on defense and one linebacker. At any rate the quarter ended with us having the ball on our 47 yard line and up 3-0.

On the way to the sideline I got to Wyatt and said dude, please stay calm and remember you have the final say. Mike, they are so strong in the box and we are running a lot of plays to their strength. I laughed and said, no shit, who do you think is having the crap beat out of him. I had played the entire quarter except for special teams. I went right up to coach and asked, so when are we going to stop running plays into their strengths? Mike, we want to wear them down. Coach, they are bigger and better than us and slower, we need to make them move and just so you know 3-0 won't be the final score. Coach, if you let this team hang around they will win. Ok Mike, I'll make Jim open things up. I smiled and said sooner than later. Oh this play calling has taking our big crowd out of it. We were 2nd and 5 on the 47.

In the huddle Wyatt called a play and I had no idea if it was his or Jim's but it was one of the rollouts that we had been working on. The play went to Mark our tight end and he managed 15 yards and for the first time in the game the crowd roared. The second play was a short post to JJ and it went for a TD and Wyatt got blasted. He was on the ground for longer than usual but jumped up raised both arms and let out a giant scream. With the point after we were up 10-0. Those two plays didn't take 3 minutes off the clock and there was a lot of time left. They took the ball on their 20 and slowly with short pass after short pass and for some reason we were a step behind every play but they were getting pounded and eventually their drive stalled on the 18 and they managed a 35 yard field goal and now the score was 10-3. They kicked off and JJ who was having an awesome game returned the kick to our 45. It was amazing how a couple of passes opened up the running game and we were moving the ball and with :03 left in the half Rod, kicked a short field goal and at the half it was 13-3.

JJ had a good return of the second half kickoff and we were in business and moving the ball in fits and starts. We were running the rollout play to the right and Mark was open but the pass hit his hands and popped in the air and was intercepted and damn if it wasn't a pick 6 and the point made is 13-10. We got the ball back and did nothing with it and were forced to punt. Then they went on a 60 yard drive and moved the ball in small chunks and we were pounding then and on the last play of the 3rd quarter Josh missed a tackle and they scored and now we were down 13-17. We hadn't been behind like this all year and you could hear a pin drop in the stadium. I immediately noticed a change in Josh and he went over to Jim and asked to see his clipboard. Jim handed it to him and Josh walked over to the trash can and threw the clipboard in and went back to Jim and said you won't be needing that. We got the kickoff and it was returned by JJ to our 35 and our worst field position all game. In the huddle Wyatt said these 2 plays will work or we could easily lose today. He called a rollout Right with three options, short Medium and Long JJ had the medium route and Mark the short rout and Pat the long route. The ball was snapped and Wyatt threw a pass which nobody could catch. I shrugged and he said same play but JJ at the hash mark veer off to the opposite side line and I'm throwing it as high and as far as I can and it should be by the numbers. He looked at me and Todd and said block someone. Damn this kid had balls and it was all on him and JJ. Wyatt took the snap rolled right and at the numbers pump faked to Pat and JJ veered off and Wyatt stopped squared up and threw a long arcing pass which JJ ran under and he caught the ball on the 5 yard line and it was an easy score. The place went nuts and Coach Weston just stood there with a slight smile on his face. Rod started on for the point after and Wyatt called time out. We were now up 19-17. Wyatt wanted to go for 2 points and eliminate the field goal timing the game. It was split what we should do so we let Rod kick the point and we were up 20-17.

We manage that score 2 plays into the quarter and this would be close the entire way, just no relief. We kicked off and they were 80 yards from a TD and 60 yards from a possible field goal. In the defensive huddle we decided to blitz on every play and mix it up where we were coming from. JJ was playing free safety so he could hopefully run any loose receiver down. It appeared that they were staring with what go the there and they were dumping passes behind the line of scrimmage and gaining 3 or 4 yards. They were simply eating time moving the ball and keeping it away from us. It was my turn to blitz and again the dump pass and a short gain. We just couldn't get to the QB, the release was too quick. They got a first down and the TV called a time out and we took the opportunity to talk things over. We decided to concentrate on the receivers. Let them complete the pass and keep the yards after catch to something more manageable. It turned out that they had a hard time with that and were called for holding and they now had first down and 20. That forced them to throw longer passes and Josh blitzed. That went well and he sacked the QB for a 6 yard loss. The result was an eventual punt and us having good field position.

With the change of possession there was another TV time out and we all went to the bench for water and a chat. We decided to change things up and run the old plays Coach Tom taught us. Hell none of them were run by either team today. We would start with a pass and Mark, tight end, would run a 5 yards down field and turn sharp right. Pat would do the same on the other side and JJ would run a fly pattern. We ran several varieties of that play and were moving the ball. Then Wyatt called a sweep right and I was getting the ball. Wyatt dropped back like it was a pass and pitched the ball to me and the play went for 32 yards. We were well into field goal range and Wyatt fumbled the snap, he recovered the ball but the lost play and a dropped pass resulted in a field goal. We were now up 23-17. That eliminated the FG but we were still not out of the woods.

There was another TV time out and we discussed how to kick off and decided to have Rod kick it in the end zone. There was 2:13 seconds left in the game. They couldn't do it with short passes like they wanted. The first pass was 15 yards down the field and our cornerback went for an interception and missed it and if anyone besides JJ was at safety we would have lost the game. JJ held it to a 25 yard gain and he hit the kid so hard they landed 5 yards out of bounds. The receiver got right up and then went to one knee. There was now 1:56 left in the game. It took some time but they got him to his bench with a knee injury.

Back at it they tried a running play which went nowhere and kept the clock running. Then there was an incomplete pass and now 3rd down and 0:31 left in the game and they were on the 28 yard time. I was thinking they had 3 plays left. We called a time out and just talked it over. Coach came out and we told him we wanted to run our straight defense as we were not worried about a pass into the end zone. Guys you better be as he is old school and that is what I would do. We took out a lineman and put in another defensive back. They lined up and just as they snapped the ball flags flew and they were penalized for an illegal formation. I knew Coach was right as I had seen that formation once in the films with Coach Carson. I got JJ's attention and he was aware. There was now only one good receiver and I knew JJ was all over that. The play went off and all I knew was that there was a loud roar and JJ was sprinting down the sideline all alone. His score made it 30-17. There was still 8 sec and we had to do the point and kick off. We lined up as if we were going to go for 2 and Wyatt simply knelt down. We kicked off and Rod kicked it short and their 30 yard return ended the game.

We lined up for the hand shake and JJ and I were last in our line. At the end of their line their captain said, good game and I hope you hit that hard next year as we will be teammates. I asked for his number he laughed and said there is no way you will remember. Dude, just trust me and I got his number. We then lined up on the respective 40 yard lines. The trophy was presented to the runners up. Then it was our turn. I let Josh grab the trophy and got my box of Hershey Bars and went up to leagues Executive Director and asked for the big 5 pound Hershey Bar. He didn't react and I took it. The other captains joined me and went to the other team and we shook hands and the candy exchanged hands. They did ask if we were sending the trophy over as well. We all laughed at that.

When we got back to our guys coach was handing out metals and I was amazed and astounded. When he got to me I smile and said, wow this is different. Coach said Mike I was wrong the last time and I regret it. Thanks for a good year and he put the metal around my neck. As soon as that was done a chant started and got louder PLAY THE SONG, PLAY THE SONG and we ran over to where the band was seated. As we jogged over they broke out playing WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS by a rock group Queen. Once we were there that played the school song and I sang along thinking next time I heard that it will be at graduation. Then we ran a lap in appreciation of the fan support.

Then Coach Weston said Mike, you, JJ and Wyatt are needed in the press room. I smile and said not unless you add the other two captains. Coach shook his head and said fine, I guess. In the press room there were 4 chairs at a table and I grabbed 2 more and one at each end of the table. The first question went to Wyatt. He was asked so how far can you throw a football? He replied I don't really know except that I guess I can hit a receiver in stride at 70 yards. So how many time do you change the plays? Well I try to run what is sent in but when I see something I changed the plays. So as a Freshman you can do that? Wyatt said well I have the looked at 20 hours of film on this team from multiple games and seasons. I get them and schooled from my Pap as he is a retired Hall of Fame high school coach who has won something like 7 of these games. Besides I have 10 regular season games and 6 playoff games under my belt. Wyatt, why did you know on the two point try late in the game. Ok guys, it wasn't late in the game the game was over and why pile on, there was no point to even kick the point, we just had to let the time run out. Adding more points would been meaningless and very unsportsmanlike. Mike, speaking of sportsmanship hay did you give you large Hershey Bar away? Well, I thought they played hard and were tough nosed football players and that they deserved some thigh more to show off at school. I also gave them individual Hershey Bars, they can eat them or keep them as a memory. I really think the PAAA could have supplied 2 of those and but then again they might not have been able to afford the $29.00. Then again they could play in a larger stadium, I believe this was standing room only today. Mike , how did this game rate in your stellar career. I smiled and said well in the top three. Mike, how about taking the body armor off and answer the question? I shrugged and said 3rd. Every reporter shouted a question and I put up my hands and said guys that was an unfortunate but honest answer but our District Championships are unique and very special. That should not diminish this game or this tournament. You asked me how a high school kid from Western PA felt and I let my guard down and answered with total honesty. I wasn't trying to offend anyone.

Mike, you played every offensive and defensive snap, today and took as good as you gave, how did you do that. Well it was like last year and I never got a rest, this year we have better players and until tonight I got a lot of plays off. You need to look at Josh and Chad. They are both D1 recruits and name me a team with better linebackers. Questions went on for another 15 minutes and I just wanted to be with my guys. With that finally over it was a celebration with the guys and I revealed the large candy bar. I but the box of smaller ones on the table and said grab one each. Some one yelled who do you think you are Coach Weston? It was a much needed shower and we were on the bus on our way to the hotel.
