Chapter 13

Book 2

Part 7

Sitting on the overstuffed sofa, Dan and Nick reminisced about growing up under the tutelage of the good Reverend. There was once a time they loved and lived happily. Their father wasn't always the fire breathing Baptist he is now.

"Do you remember when he found Billy Warrens porn mag under my bed" Nick said, and Dan cracked up laughing. "Oh yeah, the sins of the flesh sermon" Dan laughed out.

Ring! Ring...Ring! Ring!

"Hello! Nick Stone" Nick responded.

"Yeah, hello Nick, this is Louise Morton. You were a friend of my sister Laura" she replied, and Nick tried to remember who this Laura was. He remembered a Laura from when he was training for his coaching badges.

"Is she the one from California?" he asked.

"Yeah, Sacramento" she answered.

"Yeah, I remember her. How is she, and why the phone call?" he asked.

"Nick, she is very Ill. She has stage 3 cancer and she hasn't got long" she replied, with sadness very evident in her words.

"Oh, wow, I am sorry to hear that. How can I help?" he asked.

"Nick, she has asked to see you" she replied. "Do you know why? We only knew each other for a short time" Nick responded. "Nick, all I know is she has very little time left, and she has asked for you. She begged me to find you, It took me some time to track you down...will you come?" she asked.

"Sure, of course I will come. Where are you,...which hospital?" Nick asked.

"Nick, we are not far. She is in the oncology ward at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Centre" she replied.

"Yeah, I know where that is. I will be there as soon as I can" Nick responded.

Nick decided what he was going to do. He flipped open his phone and called Leo. He was going to need him on this one; and besides, he was the Doctor. He knew the jargon they were going to spout. That stuff was lost on Nick.

20 minutes later...

"So, who is Laura Morton, anyway?" Leo asked... "Someone I knew about 3 years ago. She was training to be a coach at the same time as me" Nick replied. "Yeah, but why the plea to see you before she dies? That, I do not get" added Leo.

"We sort of had a moment" Nick replied.

"A moment, what do you mean, a moment?" Leo asked, now staring intently as Nick changed lanes heading into down town LA.

"It was a drunken moment. We were shitfaced and we ended up having sex. Nothing earth shattering ; it just happened" he said as a statement of fact.

"Wow, you had sex...with a woman" Leo said with shock in his voice. "Not one of my proudest moments, I must admit. She sort of had a crush on me. She knew I was gay; I told her" he replied. "So, if she is still holding a torch for me, I won't deny her a last wish before she passes on" He added.

"You are not jealous, are you" He asked Leo.

"No, just shocked...a woman" he said again.

"I used to date Jen, remember?" Nick added, as they pulled into the hospital parking lot.

"Yeah, but no sex, as I recall" replied Leo. "Well, there" he was cut off. "No! Don't, please. I still want to see my sister as pure" Leo said, with a little sarcasm.

They headed toward the reception desk; a security guard was stationed there. "Hello, I am looking for Laura Morton" Nick informed the guard. "She is in oncology" Leo added. "Which ward, and which oncologist is treating her?" he asked, and they didn't have a clue.

"Nick...Nick Stone" they heard a voice behind them. They turned around and spotted a woman walking toward them. "Yes,...Louise?" Nick guessed.

"Yes" she replied, and they shook hands as introductions were made. "How is she?" asked Nick, looking somewhat sad. "Tired, Nick, just very tired. She is in no pain. She is so heavily medicated on pain killers, she sometimes floats off into her own world" Louise replied.

"I am sorry for this, Nick. She told me about you when she came back from her coaching course. She liked you; so I have a feeling she may be in a drug induced fantasy with you. Perhaps she thinks you were more than you actually were" she added. Nick wondered if that was the case; despite the fact they did actually have sex.

They walked into the ward and saw her lying there; no monitors attached. That surprised Nick. "Why no monitors" asked Nick. "Palliative care only, and a DNR is also in place" Louise replied.

Nick sat for a while before Laura woke up, somewhat groggy. "You came" she said somewhat hoarse. "Of course I came. We're friends, aren't we" Nick replied. "Nick, I am dying, and I need to say something to you" she responded. "Take your time, we have all day" Nick replied, before he could stop himself from saying those words.

"Nick, I am so sorry. I should have told you, and I am sorry" She added. Nick wondered why she needed to tell him she was dying; they were not that close. Okay, they had had a messy night; but nothing special. If Louise hadn't called, it would have remained in the back of his mind; probably never resurfacing.

"Laura, your family has been here for you, you didn't need me getting in the way" he added.

She looked up and spotted Leo. "Is this your partner?" she asked and smiled. "Yes, Laura, this is Leo." She looked on in shock. "Your Leo; the One?" she added. "Urkkugh, Urkkugh" she coughed, weakly.

"Water" she said softly. Nick poured her a cup of iced water and put the straw to her lips; and she took a couple of sips. "Thank you" she replied.

"Yes Laura, my Leo." She grabbed his hand and squeezed. "I told you didn't I? If you were meant to be together, you will be" she replied, with a somewhat forced smile.

"It's nice to finally meet you, Leo. Just wish it was under better circumstances" she said, smiling up at Leo. "As do I" Leo replied.

"Nick, I need you to promise me that you will look after him, take care of him. He will need you more than you know" she said, sounding groggy. "Leo is my world; of course I will look after him" Nick replied and Leo squeezed his shoulder.

"What?...No, I mean Nicholas" she replied.

"Sorry Laura, you are not making sense". Louise looking somewhat shocked, as she knew what Laura was hinting at. "Nick, he's your son; and I need to know he will be looked after" she got out before collapsing into a deep sleep.

"Laura...Laura...you need to explain". Nick was confused by the news he had just been told. "Louise can you shed some light on this, please...I have a son?"

"Nick, she will be out for hours...so, come on; we will grab a coffee and I will tell you what I know". They headed off to the coffee shop; Nick still somewhat stunned. They sat in a corner with few customers.

"Nick, she came back home, and discovered she was pregnant a few months later. She never told me who the father was; but she told me about you. I asked her if you were the father, but she said you were gay; so I left it at that" she informed us.

"We had a drunken night. She never said; she never told me. We talked off and on over the next year, but she never said" Nick replied. "I guess she thought if she couldn't have you, she would keep a small part of you; but then she fell ill" Louise added.

"Where is he? Where is my son?" Nick asked. "He is with Larry, my husband, and our two kids." She replied. "I will honour her wishes, If I had known I would have provided for my son, she never even hinted that I had a child, we would have worked something out Louise. I will take care of my son" he added,

He sat and thought of what he had missed, he can understand where Laura was coming from, but still. He also wondered if Louise was going to cause him more problems. He had only just met her and couldn't ascertain what she thought of this situation.

"You are not going to cause problems for me, are you Louise?" Nick asked, and both he and Leo waited for the response.

"What do you mean" she asked. "Guardianship of Nicholas" he replied.

"Nick, I love my sister and my nephew very much and Yes if his father was not in the picture, he would have been raised by my husband and I, and we would have loved to do it but I will abide by Laura's wishes. So, no, we won't cause you any problems" she sighed. "But Nick, please don't remove him from our lives. He is all I will have of Laura when she goes" she added.

"Louise, you will have as much contact as you need. Of course I want you to be a part of his life. Do you live near here?" Nick asked. "I live just a few miles from here. I have been taking care of her here for the last few months" she added.

"Your parents?" Leo asked.

"We don't have any. We were brought up in foster care. We never met or knew our birth parents" she added sadly.

"Sorry" Nick replied.

"Why? We have amazing foster parents; but they moved to Florida some time ago. We send birthday cards and such; but we never told them about Laura's illness. They are old now; they don't need more grief being added to their own problems" she added.

They finished their coffee and headed back to Laura's room. They walked in and knew straight away that she had passed on. Her skin had begun to mottle. Leo walked over to see if there was a pulse, but he could not detect one.

"She waited for you, and now she's gone" Louise said, with tears building in her eyes and her voice. Leo pressed the call button, and soon a nurse walked in and spotted the signs. She asked them to wait outside for a few moments. She called the Doctor, and soon he was in the room. He also knew that a DNR was in effect. He called the time of death, and he was gone.

After all was done, we sat down on either side of the bed and waited until Louise was ready to leave. She said a silent prayer, then raised her head and looked over at Leo and Nick.

Nick himself sat and gave a silent prayer. Despite his misgivings of the church and his father his faith in god never changed. He thanked god and prayed for Laura, he also said thanks for the gift of a son. He stood and smiled inwardly at Laura laying in peace no more worry no more sorrow no more pain and silently thanked her for the gift of a son.

"Let's go meet your son, Nick" she said. They stood up and walked out of the room. "Guys, just give me a second, please. I just need a moment alone with her" she said. The guys began to walk slowly out of the hospital.

"So, how old will he be" Leo asked.

"Well, it was three years ago that we conceived him, so just over two years old, I think" he replied

Soon, Louise caught up to them.

"So... Nicholas. How old is he?" Leo asked. "He turned 2 a couple of months ago" she replied, tying the dates together, somewhat.

"Nick, I knew he was yours as soon as I saw you; that's why I shouted out your name in the Hospital. He looks just like you; same eyes, hair colour, the dimple on your chin, he has that" she added. They arrived at the car, and Louise was parked not far from them. "Follow me. I live less than ten minutes away" she said, and walked away toward an SUV. They climbed into their car and followed her. They thought they had lost her; but caught her at an intersection. She soon pulled into her driveway and they parked on the street.

"You ready" Leo asked, squeezing Nick's hand. He was shaking. "I can't believe I have a son...we have a son" Nick smiled at Leo.

They walked up to the front door where Louise was standing, and were soon met by Larry, her husband. "Hi, I am Larry. I take it you are Nick" he said. They figured Louise must have called ahead. They were still hoping that Louise and Larry would not cause any problems regarding the guardianship of Nicholas.

"Welcome! Come in" Larry replied. "Louise, are you okay sweetheart?" he asked, pulling her into a hug, and she began to cry. "Not as though it was unexpected" she said, snuggling into his shoulder.

"Where is Nicholas?" she asked.

"Having a nap" he replied. "You want to see your son?" asked Larry. "Yes sir, please" Nick replied.

"Come on then" and they followed Larry and Louise to the nursery. Lying in a crib was the miniature version of one Nick Stone. He was perfect. Leo looked down on him and whispered, "He's you. He is the image of you". He sobbed, but it was a happy sob; despite the loss of the infant's mother. A perfect, two year old cameo of Nick Stone. Emotionally, Nick was a mess. A happy, conflicted mess; but a mess.

Nick, with tears in his eyes, stroked the forehead of his son and spoke softly to the sleeping tot.

"Hello Nicholas, I'm your daddy"

Nick stood standing over the infant's cot. He looked content not knowing that his mother had just died. He will know all about her from Louise when he gets older Nick determined he would know the history of his family. Both sides.

"He is just perfect" added Leo.

"We are a family now babe...no doubting that" Nick replied kissing Leo's arm that was wrapped around his shoulders.

"I cannot get over the fact I have a son, don't get me wrong Leo, I am overjoyed and thrilled at the idea of fatherhood. But this way... she should have said" Nick said, looking down speaking in whispers. "Can't dwell babe" Leo added.

"I know...just!" he said and then stopped.

"We need to look at that house now" Nick smiled. "And arrange day care" he added.

"Nick we would be pleased if you would let us help with that... Just in the short term..till you get sorted" Louise spoke up. "Thank you" replied Nick.

"We need to get supplies, we need an Infant bed, we need everything" Leo blurted out. Larry and Louise were amused at his enthusiasm.

"slow down Leo... take a breath" Nick laughed out at his partner.

"You can take him home if you like Nick, I need to make arrangements for the service. We can deal with the transfer of guardianship over the next few days" she added.

"Yeah please, we would love to take him home" Nick replied as Nicholas began to stir.

"Hello little man, you are gorgeous, you know that" Nick said as he picked up his son. Nicholas looked at him and held his arms out for Louise. "You are a stranger to him Nick...that will change...he wouldn't go to Larry a month ago, now he loves to be picked up by him"

"Nicholas, this is your daddy" she said in a soft speaking voice, Nicholas holding on tight around her neck. "Mummy" he spoke "Oh sweetheart" she put him down and wrapped her arms around Larry and sobbed.

Leo bent over and held his arms out to Nicholas who was looking on wondering what was going on. He looked up at Leo and then smiled and walked into his arms, he held onto his neck like he had with Louise and began to suck on his thumb.

"You are a natural" Nick said smiling. "If you say Mother I will smack you hard" Leo laughed. Nick held his arms out like Leo had, and Louise watched as Nicholas looked on hanging from Leo, still sucking his thumb. He removed his thumb and released himself from Leo. Held out his arms and wrapped himself around Nick's neck.

"I can see you steeling my heart little man" he spoke softly kissing the infant's cheek.
