Mr Right Too Soon?

Chapter 9

Book 2

Part 3

Leo

Leo sat in his office thinking of the declaration of love he gave to Nick two days previous. He felt like a love torn teenager, and he loved the feeling. He and Nick spoke several times a day; his feelings never wavering.

"Hey, Doc, you got a sec?" asked Danny. "Yeah Danny, come in and take the weight off" Leo replied. "Pleased you two talked" Danny said, looking at Leo. "Yeah me too, I know we have issues; but I think we will work through them" Leo said with a smile. "I love your brother Danny, and like he said to me, I would die first, rather than hurt him".

"That's good to hear" Danny said. "But a heads up... Dad is getting a petition up to have you and Nick removed" He added. "Oh, now you choose to mention it; come on, spill" Leo said looking at the young student. "I went for dinner last night, and he just heard you were back. His whole hell and damnation speech surfaced" he said. "Apparently you and Nick are corrupting the youth of this University" he added. "Danny, don't worry about it. The Dean knew of my orientation before I was offered this job, and remember, they sought me out for this job" Leo got out. "Yeah, but what about Nick?" Danny asked. "The faculty will see that for what it is; a father scorned by his son, having a grievance" Leo replied. "Just watch your back. Dad has some powerful friends" he added before leaving his office.

Leo pressed his intercom button "Judith is the Dean available for a chat this morning?" he asked. "I'll contact his office and find out, Leo" she replied, and soon his phone rang. "Dr Bo-Trent, what can I do for you this morning?" the Dean asked. "Could you spare a few minutes of your time Dean Richardson?" Leo asked. "If you can wait for thirty minutes I could pop by and see you" he replied. "Yes, thank you Dean. See you then" and Leo hung up his phone. He completed some paperwork for the state, and the Dean walked in and sat down.

"Ok Leo, what seems to be bothering you" The Dean asked. "Well, since formalities are out for the time being Peter; it has been brought to my attention that a certain Baptist minister wants me out of here" Leo said, looking at the Dean. "Oh, the Reverend Stone, I take it" he replied. "Yes. I take it you heard" Leo replied. "Leo, don't concern yourself. We knew about your sexuality before offering you the post. We hired your reputation, and so far we like what we have seen" the Dean responded.

"Peter, I have a very good contract here. Not as lucrative as I had been offered elsewhere; but I came here because this was my School. I chose to come here over financial rewards" Leo said, informing the Dean he turned down better opportunities. "Yes Leo, I am aware of that; your point?" The Dean asked. "I have been told the Reverend Stone has backing, and powerful backing at that" Leo replied. "I am not worried so much for me, but I think the Good Reverend has it in for his son" Leo added. "What I am saying, is, if he is forced out, I leave; and damned the consequences" Leo informed him.

"You would sacrifice your career for someone else" asked the Dean. "No sir I would sacrifice my standing for something that is right. Do you really want to be branded a homophobic University Dean; because if the Reverend gets his way, that is exactly what will happen. Not to mention possible lawsuits" Leo went on.

"Nick Stone has been tabbed by the head Coach as his possible replacement. The Coach has told me this personally" Leo said. "Yeah, he has hinted to me Nick was his choice" The Dene replied. "Okay. Nick is also gay. That is what his father is so pissed off about" Leo informed him. "I know coach Stone is gay; he told me that the day I hired him. I was reluctant to hire him, if I am being honest; but Coach Watson said hire him, or fire him. The Coach has high regard for Nick Stone" The Dean added.

"Dean, Nick and I were lovers seven years ago, and life got in the way. We separated, but somehow fate has brought us back; and we are trying again, Dean. Nick is my lover, and we will fight the good Reverend if we have to; but I hope we have your support, if we have to" Leo said standing up. As the Dean stood up, he looked at Leo and stated, "I was not aware of this latest development; but that is none of the university's concern. I am pleased you have reconnected, as it were" he responded as he walked toward the door, turned and smiled at Leo.

"Thank you Leo, you and Nick have my support" The Dean replied and then left Leo's office.

Nick

Nick was reeling from what his brother had told him of what his father was planning; so he decided to have it out with him. So he called the family home for the first time in over five years.

"Hello, Reverend Stone speaking!" his father said.

"Hello, Dad" Nick replied.

"I have no desire nor need to talk to you" his father responded.

"Dad, you either talk to me, at home, tonight; or you will hear me at your church on Sunday. So what's your pleasure?"

"You wouldn't dare. You wouldn't desecrate a house of worship with your sinful presence" he said, with a hint of disgust.

"You want to chance that old man?" Nick replied, with no respect shown, as none was given. "You disgust me. You have poisoned this household" he added. "How, Dad? Explain how I have poisoned your household?" he asked. "That you breathe is a desecration of the Stone name. You are the worst kind of life on this planet" his father insulted, and it hurt. It hurt more than he would ever admit.

"Dad, I will be round at seven. Be there or I will see you in church" he slammed the phone down. "Fucking asshole" he yelled in anger. "Idiot" he added, and sat for a while, calming himself down; before returning to the gym and resuming his orientation of his freshman class for wrestling.

Leo and Nick met at Starbucks and ordered their usual coffee. Nick had a solemn look on his face as he took his seat. "Oh, I take it you heard" Leo enquired. "My Father? Yeah, I am going to see him tonight" Nick responded. "What? Really? And he agreed?" inquired Leo. "I told him he either speaks to me tonight or he will hear me in church on Sunday" Nick smirked out. They chatted for a short while just before Nick's cell rang,

"Hey bro, what's up?" Nick asked his younger sibling.

"Dad's pissed at you. He called me, and berated me for telling you and Leo of his plans" Danny replied. "Dan, don't get involved. This confrontation has been brewing for a few years now. He has stirred the pot for some time now; and now it's my turn to do some cooking" Nick informed him. "You want me there, Nicky" he asked. "My fight Dan, so thanks, but no thanks" he responded. "Okay bro. You have my and Mary's support, remember that" Dan said, before ending the call. Nick smiled as he put his cell back into his pocket.

"You okay?" Leo asked. "Leo, you know what? I am looking forward to talking to the old bastard tonight. He needs to hear some things, and he is going to hear them from my mouth" Nick responded. Changing topics, Leo asked, "Saturday tomorrow, what do you have planned? I mean, apart from looking for somewhere to bury your dad" he laughed out. "Don't laugh. You will be digging the hole" Nick responded. "Ok, nothing. What do you have in mind?" Nick asked. "I need to look at some properties" Leo replied. "Thought you were staying at your folks?" Nick asked. "Nick, I am 28. I need my own space; and besides, you can't make love to me when my parents are home. Thin walls, you know" Leo said, while blushing a certain shade of red.

"Leo, stop me if you think this is a shit idea, or too soon, but would you be okay if we looked for a place for ...US, ...not just you?" Nick asked, hope in his eyes. "Wow! I wasn't expecting that. Wow...well, okay...yeah I think it's soon. But too soon?...do you really want to?" Leo tried to get out. "More than anything" responded Nick with that shit faced grin that always boned Leo up in an instant. "Well...then I think you need to hear me ou on something; and Nick, this is important to me, okay?" Leo said earnestly. "Okay, go" Nick replied.

"Kids" Leo said. "What about them?" Nick asked. "I want some... at least two... we can adopt" Leo said, looking to gauge Nick's response. "That's a deal breaker is it?" Nick asked, and Leo's heart sank just a little. "Lucky I have the same idea then, isn't it?" replied Nick, with the same grin reappearing. "We better change what you were planning to look at then" added Nick. "3 bedrooms at least" Leo responded. "I love you Doctor" Nick said squeezing his lovers hand. "I love you as much, Coach" was his response.

It was almost seven when Nick pulled into the drive of his parents' home. Nobody came out to greet him. No surprise as he knew he was as welcome as locusts at harvest time. He walked up and knocked. He waited a while, and knocked again. Ten minutes later, he walked back down to his car, when the front door opened. "You come in when I say, Boy" his father informed him. "Fine. See you Sunday Dad" he said, climbing back into his car. "The door's open, isn't it" His dad replied. Nick sat for a few minutes, calming himself down; or Leo would indeed be digging that hole.

He walked into his former home, and nothing much had changed. he walked into the living room and his father was standing by the fireplace; the bible open, laying on the coffee table. "Say what you have to say, then leave" His father spat out.

"This petition, you need to stop; and stop now. you are only going to embarrass yourself" Nick informed his dad. "Oh really, and how will I do that?" his father asked. "Your plan isn't going to work, you know that don't you?" Nick added. "I need forty percent of the board to force a debate and a vote" his father said, looking with a smirk. "I have forty two percent" he added. " You have to be kidding me. you are risking the reputation of this school to get at me, is that it?" Nick spat out. "You called me the worst kind of living thing" Nick spat out with scourge in his tone.

"Father, the two frat boys that attacked and raped your daughter, explain them. Marcus Mills was a Baptist, straight white American, practicing your kind of religion; yet he is in prison for life. He is your idea of right kind of living thing, is that right father?" Nick spat out. "Luke Benit, killed himself from remorse; but still raped her several times. Is he the right kind of living thing father? The fucking Catholic Church; paedophile scandal; are they the right kind of living thing?" He yelled at his father.

"Pilgrims lost on the righteous path, misguided by society" his father replied. "Oh? Tell that one to Danny and Mary, and see how long you have a family old man" Nick responded with disgust. "The Church will show them the way" His father continued.

"Can you hear yourself, you idiot" He yelled at his father. "Honour thy_" Nick cut him off. "Oh shove it old man. Bring your best, because I am ready for a fight; and you better get ready for some serious repercussions" Nick yelled. "Mary and her best friend Andrew? He saw her through the worst of things. As solid a friend as you will ever see. He saw her through her depression, he held her hand right through the court case. I know father. I was there. She told you to stay away. Andrew was her rock, and you know what father? He is the right kind of Human being, and furthermore he is gay. Now, disown your daughter and see how long Danny and Mother hang around you. You are a disgrace to the name of God" Nick yelled at him.

"Is that how you speak to the man that loved you, nurtured you, brought you up in God's love" his father said, with a hint of disappointment. "Love? You call teaching me that I was wrong in the eyes of the Lord, wrong in nature, love. You preached that Gays should be exterminated. You told me every Sunday that I should not breathe. Love father?...shove it".

"Just so you know. Try and fuck this up if you can. Leo and I are looking for a home, so we can build our family. One built on love and not judgement, where one is free to make his or her mistakes; and if you want to know what I mean by that, we intend to adopt" Nick informed his father, just to prove to him he has no say on how or where he lives his life.

"The state would not allow that. It's morally wrong" his father spat out. "And what Dad? You think an abusive parent, a drugged up crack whore, are good parents do you?" he spat out? "The only thing we need to prove is that wecan provide a stable and loving home, with a good support structure. We can do that dad, can you?" Nick added.

And just as he was about to leave, he imparted a little more information to him. "Oh, by the way old man, I intend to ask Leo to marry me; and for Danny and Mary to stand up with me. Don't bother looking for your invite, there won't be one. I will ask Mom, however; and it's up to her if she accepts.

Nick walked out of his former home with no intention of ever walking back into it. He rang Leo to ask him something important.

"Hi Babe, can I come over? I need to talk" Nick asked.

"Yeah, Sure. Mom and Dad are here. Is that a problem" Leo asked. "No, No it's good actually. See you in five" Nick said before flipping his phone shut; knowing what he was going to ask his lover, and that brought a smile of contentment to his face.
