Mr Right Too Soon?

Chapter 8

Book 2

Part 2

Nick

Nick sat in Starbucks remembering the good times he and Leo shared; the time they spent in Mexico, lying on the sun drenched beach. It was a wonderful spring break, and the sex they shared was mind blowing. He missed Leo. To this day, no one had come close in comparison. He knew where his heart belonged. His Olympic dream came between them, and for what? He was so distracted, he bombed. He was eliminated in an Olympic record; but that wasn't the thing eating away at him. Losing Leo hurt infinitely more...

Leo

I left my new office, said goodbye to some of my new staff, and headed out of the building; thinking this could be good. But what to do about Nick? Was going for coffee a good or a bad idea? I believe it could be a bad idea, I thought to myself, but I wanted a normal life for a while, Cody had made life difficult. Having to stand in front of the board of directors of the Yankee organisation and inform them that my relationship with him was over; that there was no chance of reconciliation. Our relationship was known within the organisation, but kept quiet from the media; as Cody's endorsements would take a major hit. Since his positive piss test, it would be over now anyway. He also told them that he had received the Job offer from UCLA, and he would like to take it.

"You after more money Doctor, because we can talk" The Chairmen informed him. "No sir. My salary is good as it is. It's just I need distance, I need a change" He informed them, and they reluctantly agreed to let him go. But he never thought Nick would be here. He looked through the window of the coffee shop and saw the person he still ached for; but he knew he couldn't go back. It wouldn't work. Love? Yeah, but was that enough? I decided a friend was all I could be with Nick Stone ...Yeah, friend. Who the fuck was I kidding?

"Hey..." Nick said as Leo walked over. "Coffee?" Nick asked. "No. Sorry, I can't stay" Leo said, standing in front of him. "Leo, please, five minutes won't kill you" pleaded Nick. "I don't think it's a good idea" Replied Leo. "What; two old friends having coffee? Alert the media" Nick said. "Oh, sarcasm, that's new" Leo said, taking a seat. "Latte with an extra shot" he told Nick, and he stood up, walked over, and gave his order; freshening up his beverage, also. He returned and sat down with the coffees.

"Leo, I feel we need to talk... talk about us" Nick said, looking at Leo. Leos eyes never left his, and his facial expression never altered. He would have been a great poker player, Nick thought to himself. "Why? Why do you want to drag up bad memories" Leo said. Nick replied, "They weren't all bad memories. I was remembering spring break, when we took that trip to Mexico" Nick reminded Leo, and a smile came across Leo's face. "A good vacation doesn't a great relationship make" Leo reminded. "I loved you" Nick replied. "Wasn't enough though, was it?" Leo added. "I still love you" Nick said softly. "Don't! Don't try and guilt trip me, it's not fair" Leo replied. "Sorry. I didn't want to do that; it's just that I never stopped loving you" replied Nick.

"I can't do this, not now". Leo stood up and was about to head out; but Nick continued to talk.

"When I was on that wrestling mat at the Olympics" -- Leo cut him off. "Yeah, you choked; it happens". Nick smiled, "I didn't choke Leo, I was distracted. I was distracted because you were not with me" he informed him. "I hurt more because you were not with me, more than the ridicule I received for months after; the jokes, the late night monologues from Leno and Letterman. The fact you were not with me hurt more. I tried calling but you were not accepting my calls. I was at a loss. I took some time off and then enrolled to be a Coach; and, well, as they say, the rest is history" Nick got out, and looked at Leo.

Leo sat back down, looking at Nick. "It hurt to see you ridiculed like that. I couldn't listen to the shit they were spouting" Leo said looking at Nick. "Nick, for what it's worth, I still have feelings for you; but I don't see how things have changed" Leo got out. "It's all different now Leo. We are stable, we have stable lives. Back then it was one hundred miles an hour; you were here, I was somewhere else, then you were there and I was somewhere else again. But Leo, now, we are both here. We are both here" he repeated; "and I look at you and I still love you as much as I did the first time I told you" he said, he sat, looking into Leo's deep blue eyes, his hair still a luxurious Black, worn a bit shorter these days, but still sexy as fuck. "Nick, I can't, I am sorry, but we can't go back," and Leo stood up and walked out of the coffee shop; not once looking back. Nick's heart sank.

Leo walked for a while, thinking about the conversation he just had with Nick. I can't, I just can't' he thought to himself; remembering the good times as well as the bad. Yes they were stressed out from study and extra classes; him for medicine and Nick training for the Olympic trials. It wouldn't work; we are very different people now. Yes, I am attracted to him still. Fuck, who wouldn't be,Leo thought to himself. "I couldn't live through him leaving, not again" he whispered to himself. "I just can't put myself through that agony".

Over the next few days Leo spent most of his time going over procedural issues, getting to know his staff, showing what new methods they were going to adopt regarding treating various strains and pulls. He liked what he saw regarding the standard of care given by his current therapists. He also got his hands dirty, treating ailments from jocks and gymnasts. He had minimal contact with Nick. He saw him often over the first week; and it was painful. He had to avoid him, though. They would both end up hurt and resenting the other; and Leo couldn't stand the thought of Nick actually hating him.

Knock!, Knock!,

"Come in" Leo shouted.

"Oh, hey Doc, could you help? I think I have pulled something" a student asked.

"Yes take a seat, and your name is?" Leo asked pulling up the student directory on his computer.

"Stone, Danny Stone" the student replied, and a shock appeared on Leo's face. He had not seen Danny since he was a child, Nick had said Danny was a senior; but he never expected to bump into him so soon.

He examined his calf for signs of a tear, but could not detect one. "Yeah, just a pull" Leo said. When he sat back in his seat, Danny's expression had changed. "I just noticed your name tag, you're him, aren't you? Nicks Leo. Oh sorry, his ex" said Danny. "Mr Stone, your pull will clear up in a couple of days; but ice packs would help greatly" Leo said, ignoring Danny's initial question. "So yes, but ignoring me, is that it?" Danny added. "Sorry Danny, it's between Nick and me, and it's private" Leo replied. "Ok, I respect that" replied Danny. "Have you spoken to him yet?" Danny continued with his questioning. "Danny, with all due respect, please; leave well enough alone" Replied Leo.

"Fuck!, you are both just the same. Idiots!!" Danny said while getting back to his feet, "Pardon me? What is that supposed to mean?" Leo demanded. "Look Doc, since you have been back, he's been a wreck. He still loves you, even if he can't pluck up the fucking courage to say it; and you; fuck, you are just as fucking hopeless. Look man, it took me a couple of years to defy my Father's wishes in reconnecting with Nick; but, he's my brother and my Dad had no right to banish him. He still loves you. When he came back from London, he tried for ever just to reach you; but he eventually took your hint and stopped bothering you, and tried to get on with his life. But you came back; and now, Nick's a mess, again " Danny said before reaching for the door. "Danny, please wait!" Leo requested.

"Please Danny, take a seat. I need to talk to someone about this, and you are as good as anyone" Leo added.

"He told me he still loved me" Leo said, looking at Danny to see if any of his father's views were still present; but couldn't detect any. "So Leo... I can call you Leo, can't I" asked Danny. "Yeah sure" Leo replied.

"Okay Leo, if he still loves you, and he has told you this, the question now is: Do you still love him? If yes, then what the fuck is the problem?" Danny asked with some determination. "It's not as easy as that Danny, trust me" Replied Leo. "Do... you... love... him?" Danny asked again; more forcefully. "I never stopped" replied Leo, in a small voice, barely above a whisper . "Well, I think you both need your heads knocked together. You love him, and Christ, I know he still loves you. Leo, not many people receive a second chance at love; especially one as strong as I think yours is. Shit Leo, don't fucking waste it" answered Danny. "I had hoped we would get back together. I was a complete mess in New York, work distracted me, somewhat. Six months, Danny, and not a word from him. I watched him bomb at the Olympics, it hurt to watch, but shit! Six months. I was just getting over him, and he started calling. I didn't need him crying on my shoulder, I didn't want to be hurt when he walked away from me again. I couldn't stand that. So yeah, I took the easy option; I ignored his calls. It hurt Danny, trust me...it Hurt" Leo added.

"And Now?" asked Danny

"We will end up hurting each other Danny, I know we will" Replied Leo. "Yeah, quite possibly; but how do you know that, unless you stop being chicken shits and take the fucking chance. Jeeze fuck, love is tough, and you have to earn it and work at it. Fuck, for two supposed intellectuals, you two sure are fucking dumb " proclaimed Danny.

While sitting and chatting, Danny's Cell rang.

"Yeah, go for it, Danny".

"Yeah, hey bro" replied Danny, talking to Nick, with Leo watching the conversation.

"Yeah just a pull. Dr Bo-Trent is treating me" he added.

"No, I haven't been stirring anything, fuck!" Danny added.

"Look bro, stop being a douche and talk to the guy. If you love him, as you keep yelling at me when you're wasted; fucking grow a pair and tell him. Oh yeah, by the way, he is as fucking hopeless as you are" Danny added, staring at Leo. "Yeah, he's sitting across from me, looking like a deer in the headlights" Danny went on. "Yeah sure, here" Danny answered, handing over the phone to Leo.

"Hi Leo. Sorry for him, he speaks before his brain engages" Nick said. "Yeah I noticed" replied Leo. "Look, I know things at the coffee shop got a bit heavy; but I do still love you and I'm not taking that back. I think we should try the coffee thing again; but in a different setting. Do you want to get Dinner sometime?" asked Nick. Leo hesitated before answering, "I would like that. I would like that very much".

"Leo, I know you are apprehensive about starting again, and I can honestly understand that; but Leo, I intend to do everything in my power to win your heart back, as well as your trust" Nick added. "Nick, I cannot talk right now. Stone ears are listening, so can I call you back, say ten minutes?" Leo asked,

Knock, Knock,

"Or we could talk right now. Danny - out, please bro" Nick asked when he walked into Leo's clinic. "Yeah sure bro, anything for you" Danny said with a smirk. "Get the fuck out, you moron" Nick added. Danny left , sniggering, shutting the door behind him.

"Hey..." said Nick looking at Leo, who was still seated, but then stood to face him. "Hey yourself" replied Leo. "I know we need some work done; but Leo, I am in love with you as much as I have ever been. I just thought I should let you know that" said Nick.

"Nick..."

"Nick..." I haven't loved anyone the way I loved you. Cody, was convenient and filled a void; a void that you made. A void I hope; and I cannot believe I am going to say this, a void I hope you can fill again. Nick, I still love you; but I am frightened. I can't go through that pain again. I know the split was mutual; but I thought it would only be for a month or so. Nick it's been almost five years, and it hurt so much" Leo informed Nick.

"Leo... I don't know how to answer that. Yeah, I thought we would get back before this. Fuck I have missed this, you know...US."

"Nick stop talking and kiss me" demanded Leo.

"My pleasure..." Nick said and leaned into Leo, pulling his face to him, to embrace his lips. He had missed this closeness to Leo for too long; as did Leo to Nick. "I've missed us" said Nick, and Leo responding by driving his tongue deep into Nick's mouth. "Less talk, more kissing" he replied.

"But we do need to talk. We need to sort some things out. I want, I need us to work" replied Nick.

"Talk tomorrow. Right now I just need your lips on mine, okay?" answered Leo, not wanting to spoil things. Talking can happen later. He missed the comfort and tenderness that he knew Nick would bring; his strength, his compassion, his...love.
