When You Least Expect By Josh Blake

Chapter 25

I continued to recover over the next several weeks, and we all settled into somewhat of a pattern. Braden was taking classes online and on campus again. I was going to work each day, with the exception of a random doctor's appointment here and there. Lucas was living with Mark, Bonnie, and Austin. I picked him up each morning for school and together we made the hour-long drive. I could tell it was wearing on him. He was not a morning person and was not used to waking up at 5:00 a.m. to get ready for school.

"Dad, I need to talk to you about something," Lucas said on the way to school one morning. Lucas had taken to calling me `Dad' over the last few weeks. He never called me that in front of any of the kids from school, but when it was just us, he liked to say it. I liked to hear it, as well.

"What's up, buddy?" I asked, taking a drink of my coffee.

"Trey still won't talk to me. Whenever I call, his mom just says that he's resting, or he's eating, or he's busy. It's always something."

Trey had been released from the psychiatric facility after he started harming himself. While he was stable now, his mom had decided to home school him for the remainder of the school year and try to get him back to where he needed to be before the start of the next school year.

"I know, buddy. I know how hard this is on you. Just remember it's not your fault," I said, reassuringly.

"I know that. At least I do now. Those sessions with the therapist helped," he said. Following everything that had occurred in the past few weeks, I thought it was important for Lucas to talk to someone. Bonnie had a connection to a therapist in the area, and Lucas had been having sessions with him for the last couple weeks.

"I don't even know if I should call him my boyfriend anymore. What kind of boyfriend am I if I can't even talk to him or be there for him?" Lucas asked. My heart hurt for him. He just wanted to be loved.

"I wish I knew how to answer that, Lucas. People are just strange creatures. You have tried to be there for Trey, but he apparently isn't ready for that yet. I guess you just have to be patient and hopefully he'll come around."

"There's one other thing," Lucas said nervously.

"And what is that?" I asked.

"Craig asked me out," he said.

"Craig is a nice boy. I knew you two had been talking more. He hasn't come out yet, has he?"

"No, not to anyone but me. He said we could hang out and just see what happens. He's not ashamed of being gay. He just doesn't want it to be a big deal," Lucas said. "He's a lot like you, believe it or not."

"Do you want to go out with him?" I asked.

"I think I do," Lucas said. "But I feel bad, like I'm cheating on Trey."

"Lucas, you have done everything you can for Trey. You're fifteen years old. You don't have to be tied down like you're my age."

"But you don't mind being tied down to Braden," Lucas said.

"That's different. Braden and I are older. We are at different places in our lives, and when we met, I knew he was the man I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. He knew the same thing. Our souls are connected. You are fifteen years old. That's the time when you're supposed to be figuring out who you are and making lots of friends. You're not supposed to be looking for a spouse yet."

"There may be another issue," Lucas said.

"Okay. What issue might that be?" I asked.

"Austin." Lucas said.

"What about him?" I asked, pretty sure I knew where this was going.

"We may have had sex," Lucas said.

"You may have, or you did?" I asked. "There is no `may' in that scenario."

"We did," he said.

"Lucas, I need to know, he didn't force himself on you, did he?" I asked.

"No! Absolutely not! In fact, I was the one who started it. We were playing with his PS5. It was late at night, and Mark and Bonnie had gone to sleep. We were in his room in just our boxers playing. He killed me on the game we were playing, so I reached over and twisted his nipple. He yelped and grabbed mine and twisted it. Then I lunged on him and we wrestled."

I laughed picturing the two teenage boys wrestling on the floor in their boxers. Boys will be boys.

"The next thing I knew, I was on top of him and had him pinned. I looked into his eyes and just got lost. I don't know what came over me, but I kissed him. Pretty soon his tongue was in my mouth, our underwear was off, and we were in his bed. I can give you more details if you want," he laughed.

"No, I'm good. I think I can pretty much imagine what went on," I said.

While Lucas did spare me the details, Austin did not spare Braden any details when they had a similar conversation that same day. Austin's version of the events started off exactly the same way. Lucas twisted Austin's nipple. Austin returned the favor. They wrestled, which led up to Lucas planting a kiss on Austin's lips. Austin kissed him back. They shucked off their underwear and moved to Austin's bed.

Austin had more experience than Lucas, so he took the lead. After several minutes of kissing, Austin licked his way down Lucas's body. He teased his nipples and his belly button before moving south. Teenage boys have little appetite for foreplay, so Austin wasted to time in engulfing Lucas's average sized, cut cock in his mouth. His nose was buried in Lucas's blonde pubes. He sucked Lucas for several minutes, almost causing him to cum. Instead of getting Lucas to cum, he pushed the boy's legs up, and buried his tongue in Lucas's almost hairless ass crack. Lucas and Trey had never explored rimming. Trey thought it was gross. Austin had experienced it with Hunter and found that he really liked both rimming and being rimmed. Lucas quickly discovered that being rimmed was one of his favorite things to do as well. After rimming him for several minutes, Austin again engulfed Lucas's cock, bringing him to a huge orgasm and swallowing his load.

After resting for a few seconds, Lucas flipped Austin on his back, engulfing his slightly larger cock. Austin's cock was larger than Trey's, causing Lucas to have to get used to it going further into his throat. After a few seconds, he got the hang of it and was loving the cock he was sucking.

Lucas was curious about licking Austin's ass. Being that he had never tried this with anyone, he didn't really know what to expect. He guided Austin's legs back and leaned into the teen's hairy blonde ass. He found Austin's hairy crack and little pink hole to be rather inviting. Again, not knowing what to expect, he breathed in through his nose to get a whiff of what he might taste. Austin had just showered a couple hours ago, so there was no off-putting smell to speak of. Lucas could detect a slight sweaty scent, not unlike what he had encountered in the locker room or from his own ass. It was not an unclean scent, but rather the scent of teen hormones. He didn't find it off-putting at all. In fact, it turned him on a little. He stuck his tongue out slightly, making contact with Austin's hole. It didn't taste bad, so he did it again. Pretty soon, he found himself loving it! The sounds that Austin made encouraged him to continue slurping on the slightly older teen's hole.

Austin asked Lucas to fuck him. He grabbed some lube from the drawer of his nightstand and reached down to lube his own hole. He worked some lube inside himself, then slathered Lucas's penis with lube. He guided Lucas toward his hole, then told him to push it in. Lucas obliged. Since Austin had just sucked Lucas off, Lucas was able to fuck him for several minutes before blowing a load into Austin's rectum. Austin blew his own load all over his stomach. The two of them shared a shower before returning to Austin's bed for the night, where they fell asleep in each other's arms.

"How do you feel about Austin?" I asked Lucas.

"He's really cool. We get along so well, and he's so nice to me. And what we did was a lot of fun," Lucas said.

"Have you done anything with him again?" I asked.

"No, I haven't had a chance. That just happened last night," Lucas laughed. I just shook my head.

"Well, let me ask you this. If Austin asked you to be his boyfriend, what would you say?" I asked.

"I'd say yes," Lucas said with no hesitation.

"Then before you agree to go out with Craig, I think you need to talk to Austin and find out how he feels. You might find that he feels like your brother, and what you did was just fun to him. But he might have other feelings. Did he tell you about Hunter?"

"Yeah, he did. He said they were in love at one time, but the age difference got in the way. Hunter was in college and Austin has one more year of high school after this. It was just hard for them to be on the same page with stuff," Lucas said.

"That's true," I said. "Hunter is a nice guy, and I consider him a friend. But he's up in Tennessee at college now, and Austin is still here. Think about that. In a few months, Craig will be off at college, too."

"I know," Lucas said. "I don't want to do a long-distance relationship."

"Just think it over. There's no reason you can't be friends with Craig and be there for him. You don't have to date him to help him through coming out. You could introduce him to Austin and the three of you could have a lot of fun."

"I don't know if I'm ready for a threesome yet," Lucas said.

"I didn't mean that kind of fun!" I said, laughing. "Jesus. All you teenage boys think about is sex."

Suddenly my phone vibrated. It was a text from Braden. The truck's infotainment system flashed the message up on the screen. Without thinking, I pressed the notification, causing it to read the message.

The female robot voice read "Braden has sent you an image. Wish you were here to help me with this. Do you want to reply?"

I turned about ten shades of red as I snatched the cord out of the phone and opened the message. Braden had sent me a picture of his hard cock.

I looked over at Lucas. He had a shit eating grin on his face. "Yeah. Teenage boys are the only ones who think about sex all the time," he said sarcastically. "Can I see the picture?"

"Absolutely not," I said. "It's nothing. It's just...a project Braden is working on that he wishes I could help him with."

"Yeah. I bet he needs help with a project," Lucas laughed. "The Braden project."

"Shut up and go to homeroom!" I said as I pulled the truck in to my parking space at school. Lucas hopped out of the truck, still laughing.

"Hey, Lucas, I yelled as he was halfway up the steps."

"Yeah, Dad?"

"I love you, son." I said.

"I love you too, Dad." Lucas said, then headed into the school to go meet his friends.

Unbeknownst to Lucas, Charlotte the social worker was coming to meet with me that day. I had been working on the process of legally adopting Lucas and becoming his legal guardian. Well, Braden and myself. Since Lucas's dad was in now in jail awaiting trial, and he was already willing to give up all his parental rights, Charlotte was able to fast track some things. There was only one issue. Lucas's mother.

Lucas's mom had left Lucas and his dad when Lucas was very young. He had no recollection of his mother and had only seen pictures of her. When she was finally tracked down, she explained to Charlotte that she had to leave because Lucas's father was so abusive to her. She was only 18 at the time, and as much as she wanted to take Lucas with her, she wasn't able to. She could barely take care of herself, much less her child. She prayed for the best for Lucas and then ran away.

As it turned out, she was living in Missouri and had gotten her life back on track. She was married to a man who was a dentist, and she worked as his receptionist. She and her husband had 3 children. Charlotte asked her if she was interested in taking Lucas in, but she declined. She said that while her husband knew about her previous relationship and child, her other children did not. She did not want to spring the fact that they had an older brother on them so suddenly. She left open the possibility of meeting Lucas and someday having a relationship, but she said she did not want to uproot his life or hers if someone was willing to take him in.

Charlotte arrived in my office at the designated time, and I asked Anita to hold all of my calls unless it was an absolute emergency.

"Josh, it's so good to see you," Charlotte said. "You look so much better since the last time I saw you."

"Thanks. It's been a rough ride, but I'm getting back on track," I said.

"Well, I have good news. I found Lucas's mother. She waived all rights. The judge will take up the case on February 19. If all goes as planned, you and Braden will be Lucas's legal guardians that day."

"That's amazing! I can't thank you enough. Lucas will turn sixteen on March 5, so I'm hoping we can keep it quiet for those couple weeks. I want to present him with the custody papers as a birthday gift."

"I think that would be fantastic!" Charlotte said. "That would be the best gift the boy could get!"

"We are having a party that night. It'll be here in town at David's house. It won't be a huge event, but I'd like it if you could come," I said.

"I'll add that to my calendar now! I can't wait to see the look on his face when he finds out!" Charlotte said.

Lucas and I drove home that evening in almost total silence.

"What's wrong, buddy?" I asked.

"I just keep thinking about Trey," he said.

"Buddy, there's nothing you can do about that. You have to move on with your life. If Trey comes around, you can still be friends."

"I don't feel like I can move on until I know he's okay with it," Lucas said. "If he still has feelings for me and he finds out I'm dating other guys, it could send him over the edge."

"I see your point," I said.

"Can we just go over there? Maybe if I can just see him." Lucas begged.

"I don't know if that's such a good idea," I said.

"You're probably right," Lucas said, dejectedly.

I felt terrible. I wanted to help Lucas through this. Suddenly, I whipped the truck off the interstate and onto the exit ramp. I made a left turn, then reentered the interstate back toward the city.

"What are you doing?" Lucas asked.

"Taking you to see Trey. It may not be the best idea, but it's worth a try," I said.

I had the Briggs's address in my phone from when I had mailed them a card a couple weeks ago. I programmed it into the GPS. It said we'd be there in 35 minutes. I called Braden to let him know I'd be home late.

"Hey sexy!" Braden said.

"Hey, you're on speaker with Lucas and me."

"Hey Braden," Lucas said. "How's that project going you wanted Dad's help with?" Lucas was laughing.

"Huh?" Braden asked.

"Never mind," I said. "He's being silly. Listen, babe, there's something Lucas and I have to do before we come home. Everything is fine, but we'll be late getting home. If you don't mind, call your mom and let her know I'll be late dropping Lucas off."

"Sure thing, babe. But are you sure everything is okay?" Braden asked.

"Yes, everything is fine. I'll explain everything when I get home. I love you," I said.

"I love you too," Braden said, then hung up.

Half an hour later, we pulled up to the Briggs home. I told Lucas to stay in the truck while I went to the door. I approached the door and rang the doorbell. Mrs. Briggs answered the door.

"Mr. Patterson, what a surprise," she said. "What can I do for you?"

"I was hoping that I could see Trey. And more specifically, that Trey would talk to Lucas. Lucas is having a terrible time with all of this, and I know Trey is too. I was hoping that maybe letting them talk might help somehow."

"I don't know," she said. "Trey is better now that we started homeschooling, but he still has bad days. This is a good day. Let me see how he's feeling. I'll be right back." She closed the door. Part of me expected her to not come back. A few minutes later, she returned to the door.

"Trey said he'll see him," she said. I motioned for Lucas to come in.

"Lucas, it's so good to see you, honey," Mrs. Briggs said, giving Lucas a hug.

"You too, ma'am." Lucas said.

"Don't you ma'am me as many times as you've been in my house. I just wish I had known sooner that you and Trey were a couple. You know I wouldn't have minded."

"I know, but we wanted to keep it a secret from my dad and we couldn't risk anyone knowing. So much for that," Lucas said.

"Trey is in his room. You know where it is," she said.

Lucas walked back to Trey's bedroom. He filled me in later on what all was said.

"Hey," Lucas said, entering Trey's bedroom and closing the door behind him. He was shocked at Trey's appearance. He was pale and had lost weight. His eyes were sunken in and looked tired.

"Hey," Trey said. "Long time no see."

"Yeah, I tried, but..." Lucas said.

"I know. It's my fault. Sorry." Trey said.

"No, none if it is your fault. If it's anyone's fault, it's mine." Lucas said.

"No, you tried to be there for me, but I pushed you away," Trey said.

The two boys sat in silence for several minutes. Finally, Trey broke the silence.

"So, who is he?" Trey asked.

"Who is who?" Lucas asked.

"Who is the boy who you want to go out with? I know there's someone. Hell, I don't blame you." Trey said.

"There's actually two," Lucas said. "Craig Bentley and Braden's brother, Austin."

"Craig Bentley asked you out? He's one of the most macho guys in the school." Trey said.

"Yeah, he's also gay. And I told him no," Lucas said.

"But you're thinking about it," Trey said.

"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't," Lucas said. "I'm lonely, Trey. I need someone to be with. I'm out now and everyone knows I'm gay, so why hide it anymore? Here I am, finally, able to be myself, and I don't have you by my side to enjoy it with."

"I just can't be what you need me to be right now," Trey said. "I don't even know if I'm gay or not."

"What do you mean? Of course, you're gay," Lucas said. "We had sex a lot and I found the porn on your computer."

"We swapped blow jobs. That's it. We never went all the way. And as far as the porn was concerned, I was curious. I want to try dating girls," Trey said.

"Wow. Okay," Lucas said, not sure what to say next. "I should go."

"No, wait!" Trey said. "Please don't walk out that door until I have a chance to say what I need to say." It was almost like the old Trey was back for a moment.

"I'm confused about who I am. This whole thing has made me think about myself in a different way. I realized that I don't know if I'm gay or not. Maybe I'm bi. Maybe I'm straight and this has just been an experimental phase. But I want you to be happy. If one of these other guys makes you happy, then go be happy. If fate brings us back together someday, then that's great," Trey said.

"So that's just it? You aren't even going to try to keep our relationship alive?" Lucas asked.

"I just can't," Trey said. "Maybe in the future, but right now I can't."

"I see. I still love you, Trey." Lucas was crying by this point. "I still love you." Trey just stared at him with a blank stare.

"I'm pretty tired now," Trey said. "Thanks for coming by."

"Yeah," Lucas said, then turned and walked out of the room.

When Lucas emerged from Trey's room and into the living area, I stood up from the sofa where I was sitting. He was visibly upset.

"I'm ready to go," he said.

"Lucas, dear, what's wrong?" Mrs. Briggs asked.

"Nothing, it's fine. Trey doesn't love me anymore. I got my answer," Lucas said.

"Just give him some time, dear, he'll come around," she said.

"No, he was very clear about what he does and doesn't want. Thank you for always being so nice to me," Lucas said. "I hope Trey gets back to his old self someday."

I nodded to Mrs. Briggs, then walked out the door behind Lucas. We got in the truck and drove off. A mile or so away, I pulled into a Chick-Fil-A. I knew how much Lucas loved their sandwiches and milkshakes, so I went through the drive through and ordered us both a meal with a shake and pulled into a parking spot to eat. I gave Lucas his food, which he started eating.

"Want to talk about it?" I asked.

"I just don't understand how you can just stop loving someone," Lucas said. "I guess I just thought that at some point he'd come out of his funk and we'd be okay again."

"I know, buddy. But these things happen. It sucks, but it happens. But you have two incredible guys in your life who can give you what Trey can't. Well, at least one. Talk to Austin and see how he feels. Then talk to Craig. You have to make a decision on who you want to date, if you even want to date either one of them."

"Being single is a lot less complicated," Lucas said. "But it's a lot less fun. How did you survive before Braden? Like, didn't you have needs?"

I laughed. "Yeah, of course I did. Everyone does. I'm not proud of it, but I hooked up with random guys here and there. There were a few dates over the years, but that was about it," I said.

"I just like feeling like someone wants me," Lucas said.

"Don't we all, buddy? Don't we all," I said.
