When You Least Expect By Josh Blake

Chapter 47

"It's hard to believe we haven't seen Hunter in nearly six years," Braden said. "I'm glad he got the chance to come for a visit."

"Yeah, so am I," I said. "I always liked Hunter. He was like family there for a while when he was dating Austin."

"I always thought they'd end up together," Braden said. "I really think they were in love, but they were just too young. I'm glad Austin ended up with Lucas. I think they are truly soul mates."

"I think you're right. Have you noticed the way they look at each other? They look at each other like they are the only two people in the world," I said.

"Yeah. I've noticed that," Braden said. "It's exactly the way you look at me."

"Come here you," I said seductively. Braden was sitting on one of the bar stools in the kitchen. I pulled him up off of it and kissed him on the lips hard. My lips were still pressed against his when Jackson walked into the room.

"Meemaw! Daddy and Dad are kissing again!" Jackson shrieked.

"Hey little buddy!" I said, pulling away from Braden and hoisting Jackson up off the floor and setting him up on the counter. "You know that Dad and I love each other very much and that is how we show our love for each other. It's not anything bad that you have to tell Meemaw about."

"Well when I kissed Dakoda at school the teacher told me it was bad and that I shouldn't kiss him like that," Jackson said.

"You did what?" Braden asked, shocked. "Why are you kissing boys at school?"

"Because I love him. He has two daddies like I do and so we are going to grow up and live together and be like you and Daddy and his daddies," Jackson said.

I just looked at Braden with an expression of surprise.

"We need to talk about this, Jack." Braden said. "You're not in trouble, but we need to talk. You can't go around kissing other boys at your age."

"But you said it's not a bad thing," Jackson said. "I don't understand why you and Daddy can kiss but Dakoda and I can't."

Braden sat down on a barstool in front of Jackson, so I did the same thing.

"Baby, when two men kiss, it's because they love each other. There is nothing wrong with it. But you shouldn't do that until you are older. Some men like other men. Some men like women. Some women like men and some like other women. You don't really know what you like until you get older. So you really can't know who you love right now," Braden said.

"When you get a little older, you'll start to notice people that you like. You may notice boys, or you may notice girls. You may notice both, and that's okay. But that's how you will know who you like," I explained. "But until then, no more kissing anyone at school. You got it?"

"Yes, Daddy. But I already know I like other boys just like you and Dad."

"You may," I said. "But let's give it a few years just to make sure," Braden said. "Now run up to your room and get some clothes on. We can't have you meeting our guests in your pajamas!"

"Yes, Dad!" Jack said as he ran upstairs to his room.

"I thought we had a few more years before we had to deal with that," I said.

"Yeah, so did I," Braden said. "I really didn't know until I was 13 or 14."

"I knew when I was 10," I said. "But I really didn't know until I started jerking off to the underwear models in the JC Penney papers!"

"I remember that," Mom said, walking into the room. "I'd find them under your mattress."

"Mom! I didn't know you were there!" I said, startled.

"Sorry," she said. "I was just sitting there listening to you two handle Jack's situation. I don't know why but I continue to be amazed at how great you two are at parenting. I hate to admit it, but you both got me beat big time."

"I wasn't expecting to give him any form of `the talk' this early," I said. "At this rate, I figure we may be giving him the whole talk before he's ten years old."

"God, I hope not." Braden said. "I'm still traumatized from when my dad gave me the talk. Actually, it was more my mom. Dad just got embarrassed and couldn't say `penis.' That just made it that much worse."

"At least you got the talk," I said. "This one and my dad didn't bother."

"I was too embarrassed," Mom said. "And so was your dad."

"I figured it all out when I needed to," I said. "It worked out alright."

"What time is Hunter coming?" Mom asked. "I'll start dinner here shortly."

"He's supposed to be here around four," Braden said. "Austin and Lucas will be here around three, I think."

"He also said he's bringing his husband," I said. "So set a place for him, too."

"What do we know about his husband?" I asked. "Did Austin say anything about him?"

"Nope. Nothing except he's about your age and he's a marketing professor at the university. So he's older than dirt," Braden said.

"Ha ha. Very funny. I didn't hear you complaining about how old I was last night," I snickered.

"I'm still here!" Mom said. She had walked into the pantry and started collecting items she needed for dinner. "I don't need to hear about what you did last night!"

Braden and I just relaxed for the few hours until Hunter and his husband arrived. Austin and Lucas arrived a little while before Hunter, so we had a good visit while we waited. We didn't get to see Austin and Lucas as much as we wanted to these days. They were going to spend the night and spend some time with Mark and Bonnie the following day. Hunter and his husband were in town on business and were staying in a hotel. We had tried to persuade Hunter to just stay at the house, but his husband was there on business and had a hotel room provided.

Mom was working on dinner. I don't know how we would have ever survived without her handling most of the meals for us! We probably would have spent a lot of time eating out or would have hired a cook if we didn't have her there helping us. Tonight's meal was fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and roasted brussels sprouts. Mom didn't fry chicken very often because it was a lot of work, but when she did, even the Colonel couldn't compete with her recipe! It was a secret family recipe that had been passed down for several generations. While you might laugh, we actually had a copy of it locked in the safe just in case the house burned, or a tornado hit. I had tried to follow the recipe, but I still needed some practice to be as good as mom.

We had arranged for Jackson to spend the night with Mark and Bonnie so he wouldn't be disturbed by our entertaining. He really didn't remember Hunter, so there was no real need to have him stay around. Hunter would be able to see him when he arrived for a few minutes, then Mark and Bonnie would come by and pick him up and speak to Hunter as well.

"Daddy, why do I have to go with Nana and Pops?" Jack asked. "I wanna stay here."

"You're going to have a great time with them, buddy!" I said. "Dad and I have some friends coming over that we haven't seen in a long time and we are going to be talking about grown-up stuff."

"It's always grown-up stuff! You never do kid stuff!" Jack huffed.

"We're not kids," I said. "You do kid stuff with other kids. Now go get your bag ready with your pajamas and your toothbrush."

"Okay, Daddy. If I have to," Jack said as he huffed back up the stairs.

About that time, the doorbell rang.

"They're here! I yelled. Braden, Austin, and Lucas came into the room and walked with me downstairs to the door. I opened the door to find a more mature, handsome version of Hunter than what we remembered from a few years ago. His hair was shorter and styled in a way that made him look very professional.

"Hunter!" Austin yelled. We ushered him into the house and shared hugs and handshakes in the foyer before moving upstairs to the den.

Austin introduced Lucas to Hunter and the two of them seemed to hit it off.

"Where's your man?" Austin asked.

"He's going to be a little late," Hunter said. "He had a meeting with some potential donors and it ran a little long, so he told me to come on. I know that is incredibly rude, but it can't be helped."

"Nah, it's not rude," I said. "The man has to work to take care of you! We haven't heard much about him. Fill us in before he gets here."

Hunter explained how he and his husband met. Hunter had been recruited to play baseball at the university. He had originally attended a smaller, community college, but had been recruited by the university after making a splash on the community college's baseball team. He decided to major in sports management with hopes of staying on as a graduate assistant and ultimately a permanent employee at the university. He was classified as a junior upon enrolling at the university, so he started taking sports management classes immediately. The first class he took was marketing. Hunter explained that when he walked in the room and saw his professor, it was love at first sight. For him, anyway. It took Dr. Stephens a little longer to come around to the idea.

"I saw him and I knew I had to have him," Hunter said. Dr. Stephens had been in his early thirties at the time.

It took Hunter some time to seduce Dr. Stephens. While he could tell Dr. Stephens noticed him, the professor was being cautious not to cross the boundary between a teacher and student relationship. Hunter looked for reasons to stay after class and visit Dr. Stephens in his office. He wore sweatpants that clung to his body with no underwear, accentuating his package and his ass. Once he saw Dr. Stephens lock his eyes on his full crotch, he knew he had him.

Hunter began to feign confusion over the content that Dr. Stephens covered. He asked the professor one day after class if he'd be available for a tutoring session that evening. The professor told Hunter that his last class ended at six that evening, and he kept office hours until eight. Hunter, having already checked the department schedules, knew that Dr. Stephens would be the only professor still in the building that late. Hunter set an appointment for 7:15. He wanted to make sure that Dr. Stephens would be alone in the building when he returned.

Hunter went home to prepare for his tutoring session. In his dorm room, he douched, showered, and put on cologne and deodorant so he would be completely ready for the professor. He dressed in some tight, short khaki shorts that ended about five inches above the knee, putting his hairy legs on display. The shorts also showed off his ass and his package. He had chosen to go commando. He added a tank top, since the weather was warm enough, that would show off his muscular arms.

When Hunter arrived, he was pleased that all the other students seemed to be gone. Dr. Stephens was in his office, still wearing his dress shirt and pants, but he had removed his jacket and his tie to be more comfortable. When Hunter walked in, he saw Dr. Stephens look him up and down almost like he was in a trance. The professor snapped out of it and greeted him.

"Hunter, so good to see you again. Have a seat," Dr. Stephens said, motioning toward the chairs in front of his desk. "What seems to be giving you trouble?"

"Dr. Stephens, in today's lecture, you mentioned how sex sells and how some companies use sex to sell their products, right?"

"That's correct, Hunter."

"Can you give me a little...more information on that?" Hunter asked.

"Well, I can try. Do you have your textbook?"

"No, I'm afraid I don't. But I'll just come stand beside you and look at yours," Hunter said. The office was warm. Hunter could feel himself starting to perspire, which triggered his deodorant. He could smell himself. If he could smell himself, Dr. Stephens would certainly be able to smell the fresh, manly scent of the deodorant and cologne he was wearing. Hunter moved and stood directly beside Dr. Stephens, putting his crotch close to the professor's face.

"Okay, Hunter..." Dr. Stephens said, nervously. "Let's look on page 241. You see, when a company uses imagery that is sexually suggestive, it causes people to want to purchase the product being shown for various reasons. For some people, they think buying the product will make them look like the person in the ad, kind of like this Calvin Klein ad."

"Yeah, that guy is ripped," Hunter said. "It almost makes you want to touch it, doesn't it?" Hunter pushed his crotch almost into the professor's face. Poor Dr. Stephens didn't know whether Hunter was talking about the ad or his crotch. Either way, the professor agreed.

"Yes, Hunter. It does." Hunter knew he had him where he wanted him.

"You can touch it," Hunter said. "Go ahead. I know you want to."

Dr. Stephens moved his hand slowly toward Hunter's crotch, then jerked back.

"Hunter, this is wrong. I can't do this. I could lose my job," Dr. Stephens said.

"You're not going to lose your job. I'm old enough. And you're not forcing me. I want you. You want me. What's wrong with that?" The professor, himself now perspiring, looked Hunter in the eyes and licked his lips.

"I want you so bad," Dr. Stephens said. "I've only done this with one other boy, and it was a long time ago."

"It's alright. It'll come back to you," Hunter said. He leaned down, pressing his lips against the professor's. At first, Dr. Stephens hesitated. Then, his lips parted, allowing Hunter's tongue to enter his mouth. Hunter tasted sweet and fresh. The professor's hard cock was leaking into his pants. He could feel the dampness. Hunter reached down and grabbed the professor's cock through his pants. The professor fondled Hunter's cock through his shorts. Hunter started to open his shorts.

"No, not here," the professor said. "I can't do this here. You go ahead and leave. Meet me at my house at 8:30. Here's my address." The professor scribbled his address on a piece of paper and handed it to Hunter. Hunter stuck the paper in the pocket of his shorts, kissed the professor on the lips, and walked out. He knew he was about to get exactly what he had wanted for so long.

About that time, Jackson walked into the room, interrupting Hunter's story. It had been a long time since Hunter had seen Jackson, and he got a kick out of seeing how much he had grown.

"Hey buddy, do you still have a stuffed elephant?" Hunter asked.

"Yeah, it sleeps in my bed with me at night," Jack said.

"Well, I gave it to you when you were just a little guy!" Hunter said.

"Oh cool! Jackson said. "So it's kinda like we're friends!"

"Yeah, we are friends!" Hunter high-fived Jackson.

"Alright buddy," Braden said, "Go finish getting ready. Nana will be here soon to pick you up!"

"Go on with your story," Austin said. "I want to hear about your night with the professor!"

When Hunter got to the professor's apartment, he had changed clothes and was wearing jeans and a University of Tennessee t-shirt. Hunter said that as much as he just wanted to jump in bed with the professor, something told him to just slow down. They sat on the couch together and drank beer. While there was some hand holding and fondling of each other's packages, they kept their clothes on. At least for a while.

"You are nervous, aren't you," Hunter asked.

"Yeah, I am. I haven't been with another man in years. What about you?"

"I had a boyfriend back home in Alabama," Hunter said. "But we ended things about the time I moved to Tennessee."

"You know I'm from Alabama, too," the professor said. "I had a boyfriend when I was 18 for a few months. He was a great guy. The sex was amazing, too."

"What happened?" Hunter asked.

"I'm an idiot, that's what. He was in love with me. Looking back, I loved him, too. But I was too young to see it. I got up here and it was a whole new world. And there were girls everywhere! They were all over me, and I decided I liked the attention I got from them. So, I stopped calling him back. He kept on. Finally, he left one final message and that was it. I never called him back."

"So you dated girls?" Hunter asked.

"Yeah, but I didn't get much pleasure from it. It was a lot of work. Deep down, I knew I liked guys. But I had this image I thought I needed to maintain. Finally, I just stopped dating girls and enjoyed my life being single. Until you, I haven't even considered being with anyone."

"Yeah, I get that," Hunter said.

"Well fuck," the professor said. "Here I am acting all sappy like I'm looking for a long term when you probably just want to have sex and be done."

"I'll be honest," Hunter said. "I did want to have sex with you. Badly. But now, I don't know. I feel like we have a connection. Is that crazy?"

The professor took Hunter's hand. "No, it's not crazy. I feel it too." The two men, one about ten years older than the other, embraced and locked their lips together on the couch in the older man's living room.

"Can we take this to the bedroom?" the professor asked.

"Yes, Professor Stephens. I want that so much," Hunter said. The professor laughed.

"With what we are about to do, you'd better start calling me by my first name. Unless calling me Professor Stephens makes you horny."

"Oh, it does Professor...I mean Colton."

Just as Hunter was finishing up his story, the doorbell rang. I got up to go answer it when Mom came rushing through the room.

"No, you boys sit down. I'll get it!"

We sat back down and continued chatting when Mom walked a very attractive man into the room. He looked to be about my age and had a beard. He was also wearing glasses.

"Everyone, I want you to meet my husband Colton," Hunter said. "Colton, this is Josh and his husband Braden." I shook Colton's hand and looked him in the eye. There was something familiar about him. I just couldn't quite place it. He shook hands with Braden as well.

"And this is Austin and his fiancé Lucas," Hunter said.

"Ah, the notorious Austin!" Colton exclaimed. "I've heard a lot about you. Hunter tells me the two of you were really tight. Maybe I better keep an eye on you." Colton laughed.

"Nothing to worry about at all, man," Austin said. "You got Hunter and I got this gorgeous ginger right here." Austin put his arm around Lucas.

"He is pretty gorgeous, isn't he. Are you sure you won't swap with me?" Colton said.

"Oh, stop it!" Hunter said, hitting Colton softly on the arm.

"Would you boys like something to drink?" Mom asked, coming into the room. "Dinner will be ready in about half an hour."

"Some tea would be nice," I said.

"Coming right up, dear!" Mom said.

"Your mom is really nice to take care of everything for you," Hunter said.

"She loves it," I said. "She'd rather be here helping us than off somewhere by herself. She loves getting to take care of Jack, and with another baby on the way, we are really going to need her help."

"What? Another baby?" Hunter asked.

We told him all about Savanna and how she came to stay with us. After going through he entire story, both he and Colton were asking a lot of questions about the adoption process and how it worked. Throughout our conversation, I kept stealing glances at Colton. I noticed that every time I'd make eye contact with him, he'd quickly look down as if he was caught somehow. He engaged everyone in conversation except me. Don't get me wrong, though. He was polite. He just didn't engage in conversation with me any more than he had to. I didn't think he liked me very much.

Mom announced that dinner was ready and asked us all to come to the dining room. As always, the spread looked amazing. We had roast chicken, potatoes au gratin, green beans, homemade yeast rolls, and Mom's homemade banana pudding for dessert.

"Mrs. Patterson, that is one of the best meals I've had in a while," Hunter said. "Can we at least help you clean up?"

"Nonsense, I can handle it," Mom said.

"At least let us load the dishwasher, Mom," Braden said. "I can tell your back is hurting."

"Well, normally I'd never allow it, but you just don't know how my back is hurting right now," Mom said.

"Mom, go take one of your back pills and lay down. We'll handle all of this. Now I'm not taking no for an answer. You've done enough for tonight. The meal was delicious."

"Thank you, dear," Mom said. "Hunter, Colton, please forgive me. It really is nice having you both here. Your room is all made up and ready. The boys will show you where to go."

"We'll get them to their room, Mom," I said. I got up and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Now go to bed. I love you."

When we heard Mom's door close, Braden looked at me with a concerned expression on his face. "Josh, I think she's working too hard. I don't know if she can keep going like this. We might have to find some more help with the new baby coming."

"I'm afraid you're right," I said. "But let's not discuss it now. Austin, will you and Lucas show Hunter and Colton out to the patio? It's such a nice night I think we can sit out there a while. Braden and I will get things cleaned up here and then we'll join you."

"We don't mind helping," Hunter said.

"I know you don't, but you're our guests. I won't hear of it. Besides, Mom would kill me if she found out I let guests help clean up. Go on outside. Braden and I will be out shortly."

Braden and I proceeded to load all of the dirty dishes in the dishwasher. We put all the leftovers in the refrigerator and cleaned up as best we could. Knowing Mom, she'd clean up behind us again in the morning.

"What do you think about Colton?" I asked.

"He seems nice enough," Braden said. "Hunter seems happy. That's what matters."

"Yeah, I guess so. There's just something about him. I can't put my finger on it."

"You and your feelings and hunches," Braden said. "You always have a gut instinct about something."

"And it's usually right," I said, hugging him from behind and planting a kiss on his neck. "Go on outside with the guys. I'm going to check on Mom then I'm coming out there with you.

I knocked on Mom's door and she told me to come in. I sat on the side of her bed and stroked her hair just like she did for me when I was a little boy and I didn't feel well.

"It's just a little backache, honey, I'm not dying. At least not yet."

"I know you're not, but you're not a young woman anymore, Mom. You're getting to the age where you have to slow down and take it a little easier."

"I'm not going to be a burden on you," Mom said. "As long as I live here I will pull my weight. If I can't do that, you might as well put me in a nursing home."

"Mom, I want you to hear me right now. I will never put you in a nursing home. You are nowhere near ready for that, but even if you were, I'd take care of you right here at home. You are stuck with us, whether you like it or not. Now, go to sleep and stop worrying so much about everyone." I kissed her on the forehead. "I love you, Mom."

"I love you too, baby. Go spend some time with your guests."

I left Mom's room and walked upstairs to our bedroom to visit the restroom before heading outside with the guys. I was just leaving our room when Colton emerged from the guest room down the hall.

"I see you found your room," I said.

"Yeah, Austin showed us where it was. I hope that's okay," he said.

"Of course it is," I said. The two of us stood there in the hall and just stared at each other for a minute. Suddenly, it occurred to me where I knew him from. By the look on his face, he recognized that I had finally placed him.

"You finally put it together, didn't you?" Colton asked. "I was wondering whether you were just playing it cool or if you really didn't recognize me."

"Well, it has been nearly twenty years," I said. "And you grew a beard and got glasses. But son of a bitch. Here you are in my house after all these years."

"Yeah," Colton said. "It's a small world." He looked uncomfortable. "You probably have a lot you want to ask me. Or say to me."

I opened my mouth to start talking. To say something I'd probably later regret. Then I closed my mouth again. Finally, I spoke. "There are a lot of things I want to say to you. But I'm going to not do that for now. But I will say this much. You broke me. After you stopped answering my calls and wouldn't talk to me anymore, I went to a bad place. Not an actual bad place but in my head. I didn't think I was worth living, much less worth having someone love me again. I didn't think I'd be able to love again. But then Braden came along, and..."

"Babe? Braden called up the stairs. "Is everything okay?"

"Yes, everything's fine, babe. I was just making sure Colton knew where to find everything upstairs. I'll be down in a minute."

"Does he know about us?" Colton asked.

"No. Does Hunter?"

"No. Maybe we should keep it that way," Colton said.

"I don't lie to Braden. I never have and I never will. We have a relationship built on trust and understanding. I'm going to tell him. After that, he will likely tell Austin, who will likely tell Hunter. So, we need to just get this out in the open."

"Josh, for what it's worth, I'm sorry," Colton said. "I was...we were young. I didn't know how to be in a relationship. Especially one where I was hours away from you. Have you tried being on a college campus with hot young guys everywhere and having to keep your dick in your pants because you have a boyfriend four hours away?"

"Yeah. I did it. I did it for you, until you cut me off. Even after that, I told myself that I would save myself until you came back to me. I thought you'd want me if I hadn't been with anyone else. But you were never coming back. God, I was such a fucking loser!" In my head, I was 19 years old again. I felt again just like I did during those few years that I tried to get over Colton.

"No, I was the loser," Colton said. "I should have never done that to you. I should have just ended it and moved on instead of just cutting you off."

"Why couldn't we at least be friends?" I asked. "You could have still called. I would have still talked to you. You were my first love. Did you really love me like you said you did before you left for Tennessee?"

"I did," Colton said. "Or at least I think I did. But I told myself I'd be happier single. That way I could have fun and play around. But that always just left me feeling empty and alone."

"You weren't the only one," I said. "Braden had to practically force his way into my house to make me realize how bad I wanted to be loved."

"I know what you mean," Colton said. "Hunter practically forced himself on me, too."

"Did you at least think about me?" I asked.

"All the time. I couldn't get you out of my head. To be honest, I really didn't get over you until I started dating Hunter."

"Then why didn't you call?" I asked. "We might have picked back up where we left off."

"I thought about it. I really did. But I couldn't bring myself to do it. I had hurt you so bad and I knew it. I felt like a dick and I knew I didn't deserve you. But now that you're here in front of me...Merry Christmas."

"What? It's not Christmas. What are you talking about?" I asked, confused.

"Your last voicemail to me. It was Christmas Eve. You called and said you were done. You wished me a Merry Christmas and told me it was on me now. So I'm saying it back to you."

"Colt?" Hunter called up the stairs. "You alright?"

"I'm good, baby. We're coming down now."

"You two better not be up there having some hot sex with each other," Braden yelled up the stairs. I couldn't help but laugh.

"No, babe. We haven't done that in about twenty years," I said as Colton and I started downstairs.

"What?!" Braden said with shock in his voice. "Josh, you want to explain to me what that means?"

"I'd like to hear that explanation, too!" Hunter said.

"Then let's go out to the patio and we'll tell it. We better grab some beer. This one is going to take a while," I said.
