When You Least Expect By Josh Blake

Chapter 35

I tried not to think about Dad very much in the weeks following his death. Our relationship had always been strained, and my sexuality had just pushed it over the edge. Dad was never a nurturing parent and was always quick to criticize when things didn't go the way he thought they should.

I vowed to be a different kind of father to my children. After Dad's passing, I spent more time than normal with Jackson. Braden and I used every extra moment we had to spend time with him. We went to the zoo, the toy store, and even went camping. Camping had never been my thing, but Jack wanted to go, so I was not about to say no. He was at an age where he was making memories that would stick with him for the rest of his life. I wanted his memories of his childhood to be nothing but good ones.

"Daddy, can we get a puppy?" Jack asked one day while we were eating breakfast.

"I don't know, baby. Puppies are a lot of responsibility. You have to feed them, walk them, and clean up after them," I said.

"I'll do all that. I promise. And Dad said I could have one if you said it was okay," Jack said. I looked over at Braden. He just shrugged his shoulders and continued eating his Frosted Flakes.

"Oh, he did, did he?" I said. "Well, I guess if Dad said we could get one then I have to go along with it."

"Yay! I love you, Daddy!" Jack jumped up and ran around the table and jumped into my lap.

"Whoa, careful buddy." I had to move my coffee cup out of the way to keep Jack from knocking it off the table. I kissed him on the cheek and wrapped my arms around him.

"We'll find one this weekend," I said. "Now go tell Dad thank you, too."

Braden quickly pushed his cereal bowl back before Jack attacked him the same way he did me. My heart fluttered a little watching Braden hold Jackson close as he hugged him. Sometimes I still didn't know how I got so lucky.

"Nice job telling him to ask me for a puppy," I said to Braden in our bedroom. We had finished breakfast and headed up to finish getting ready for work.

"I knew you couldn't say no," Braden said, walking up to me and straightening my tie. He then used the tie to pull me close to him until our lips met.

"I love you so much," I said.

"I love you more," Braden whispered. "Have a good day, babe." Braden grabbed his keys and headed off to work.

"Good morning, Anita," I said as I walked into my office.

"Good morning, sir. How are you this morning?"

"I'm doing great. You don't know anyone who has any puppies for sale, do you? I asked.

"Oh boy. Are you guys getting a dog?" Anita asked.

"Jack finally asked for one. I knew it was coming. He asked this morning at breakfast. And you know I can't say no to that boy."

"Of course not. What kind of father wouldn't let his son have a puppy?" Anita said.

Suddenly it was like I time traveled back to my own childhood. I was six or seven. A stray puppy had followed me home from the park. It was a skinny puppy and needed to be fed. But he was super friendly and climbed all over me when I sat down on the front steps with him. I brought him in the house and Mom let me feed him some leftover chicken from a couple days earlier.

"Can I keep him, Momma?" I asked.

"You know your dad doesn't like dogs," she said. "You can ask him, but don't be upset when he says no."

"But look at him," I said. "He needs me! He's my new best friend!"

"He is cute," Mom said. "But I doubt your dad will agree."

"I'm going to name him Pluto," I said. "He kind of looks like a Pluto, doesn't he?"

"If you say so, dear," Mom said.

I played with Pluto in my bedroom until Dad came home from work. Dad walked past my room and spotted the dog and immediately got upset.

"What the hell is this filthy mutt doing in my house? Patti! What the hell?" Dad yelled.

"Dad, this is Pluto. He's really sweet. And he was really hungry. Can I keep him? Please? He won't make a mess or anything." As if on cue, Pluto picked that very moment to start peeing on the carpet in my bedroom.

"Get that damn thing out of my house! Do you think we have money to replace these carpets?" Dad said.

When I didn't move fast enough, Dad grabbed Pluto by the back of his neck and carried him to the front door.

"Daddy! No! Please don't!" I yelled, crying. Dad opened the door and hurled Pluto out into the yard. He landed with a whimper. I ran past Dad and out into the yard after him. I picked up the crying puppy and held him close to me.

"Put that damn flea bag down and come in for supper!" Dad yelled.

"No, if he can't come in, I won't either!" I said.

"Fine! Stay out there!" Dad yelled, slamming the front door.

Pluto and I found a spot behind the house where we sat huddled together. Both of us were crying. Pluto would lick my face every now and then, which cheered me up some. Finally, it got dark. It was the time of year when it started getting cold after dark. I had made my mind up that Pluto and I would just stay outside and keep each other warm.

"Josh, honey, you have to come inside," Mom said, coming around the corner of the house with a flashlight in her hand. "You'll catch your death of cold out here."

"I can't leave Pluto alone," I said.

"Pluto will be just fine outside, dear. He's a dog. Now come on, let's get you inside and get you cleaned up for bed."

Against my wishes but not wanting to disobey Mom, I put Pluto down and followed her into the house. Pluto sat at the front door and whined all night. The next morning, he was still there. I played with him before school and told him I'd be home to play with him in the afternoon.

That afternoon, I got off the bus and ran up to the house looking for Pluto. He was nowhere to be found. I called for him, but he never came. I never saw Pluto again. Dad would only say that he was gone. Mom said she didn't know what happened, and I believe her. I believe that Dad took him somewhere away from our house. I refused to think that he did anything worse than that to a defenseless puppy.

"Josh? Are you okay?" Anita asked, bringing me back to the present day.

"Yeah, I'm fine," I said, coming back to reality.

"You were a thousand miles away," she said. "I was just saying that my cousin works at the animal shelter downtown. I'll call her and see what kind of puppies they have."

"Thanks, Anita, that would be great," I said. I walked into my office and sat down at my desk. Before long, I got busy with phone calls and emails and forgot all about the puppy situation. My phone rang again from a number I didn't recognize.

"This is Dr. Patterson," I said into the phone.

"Dr. Patterson, my name is Leo McGrady. I am the attorney in charge of your father's estate. I need to set up a time to meet with you to settle his estate and transfer the assets to an account of your choice."

"Look, Mr. McGrady, just go ahead and sell the house. I know that's all there is. I'm not interested in anything in it. Have an estate sale and sell it all," I said.

"I'm afraid it's not that easy," McGrady said. "I really need to meet with you, Dr. Patterson. Your father had some rather interesting assets that I think you'll be interested in."

"Are we talking about his gun collection?" I asked. "I know some of those are rare, but I don't want them. They can be sold."

"Dr. Patterson, were you aware that your father invested heavily in the stock market?" McGrady asked.

"I was not aware of that," I said.

"Dr. Patterson, your father was the owner of some very valuable stocks. His portfolio is truly impressive. It includes Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, just to name a few."

"When did he buy those?" I asked, intrigued.

"He was an early shareholder in all of those. He bought them when they were just coming on the market, so he made a substantial profit over the years."

"How much are we talking, Mr. McGrady?"

"As of today, his portfolio is worth just under 2.3 million dollars," McGrady said.

"Did you just say 2.3 million dollars?" I asked in disbelief.

"I did, that is correct. Can I meet with you sometime this week to discuss the details?" McGrady asked.

"Let's meet today. As in right now. I can be there in an hour," I said.

"I have a client coming in at noon, but I can meet with you at one," McGrady said.

"Done. Send me your address and I'll be there," I said.

"Anita, I need you to cancel my meetings for this afternoon. Call Devin and tell him I need a sub in Braden's classroom to cover his afternoon classes."

"Certainly, but is everything okay?" Anita asked.

"Couldn't be better," I said. "I'll see you tomorrow." I flew past Anita and headed to my car.

I called Braden's cell phone as I pulled onto the highway.

"Josh, what is wrong? A sub just came into my room and Devin said you told him to cover my classes. Is something wrong with Jackson?" Braden was frantic.

"No babe. Jackson is fine. I should have called you first. I'm coming to get you. Be at the front of the school in ten minutes. I'll explain when I get there." I pulled up in front of the school and Braden was ready, just as I asked him to be.

"Josh, what the hell? You have me scared to death," Braden said.

"It's nothing bad, babe. Dad's lawyer called. Dad had over 2 million dollars in stocks, babe. It's ours. We are going to meet with the lawyer now."

"Are you kidding me? Are you telling me that we just became millionaires?" Braden asked.

"That's exactly what I'm telling you. Now do you see why I was so frantic?"

"Wow. Yes. Does your mom know about this?" Braden asked.

"No, not yet. I haven't told anyone but you," I said.

Braden and I met with the attorney and could not believe that it was actually true. I knew my dad had a few stocks, but I never dreamed that he had played his cards just right to have that kind of portfolio!

We had to decide what to do with the money. On the drive over, we had discussed keeping the money invested and using it to pay for our children's college education. We ended up leaving the bulk of the money invested. We did, however, set aside $50,000 for Savanna. We put it in an account that would continue to draw interest until she accessed the money. We figured it would be plenty to get her through culinary school after the baby was born. We also kept enough money aside to take a vacation as a family. With all of the paperwork signed, McGrady said he would get to work on everything right away. The $100,000 that we planned to use for a family vacation would be in our account by the end of the week. Of course, we knew it wouldn't take that much for a vacation, but we wanted to have some extra. I also planned to buy Mom a new car and replace my truck.

School was almost out for the summer, and I had some vacation time to use. I knew that Mom had always dreamed of visiting England, France, and Italy, and Braden and I knew that if we were going to take a trip like this, we needed to do it before the baby came. Of course, Mom flipped out with excitement when we told her the news of the money and our plans for vacation. Even though we wouldn't be leaving to go on our trip for another month and a half, Mom started making plans and talking to travel agents to make arrangements. I didn't mind because it saved me from having to do it!

Braden and I had not been to Chattanooga in a while to visit our friends Dorothy and Rose, so we decided to take a quick weekend trip up to the mountains to visit them the weekend after we got the news about my inheritance.

The drive up Lookout Mountain was as gorgeous as ever. It was a lovely late spring day with temperatures around seventy-five degrees. We couldn't have asked for better weather. We pulled into the bed and breakfast and started toward the door. Rose met us at the door before we could get there.

"My boys! It's so good to see you!" Rose said. We both put our bags down and hugged her.

"Where's Dorothy?" I asked.

"I wanted to talk to you both about that," Rose said, her eyes watering. "Dorothy has had a stroke. Not a terrible one, but bad enough."

"Oh my God," I said. "Rose, why didn't you call?"

"Dorothy didn't want to upset your lives. She is moving more slowly than normal, and she has a little bit of a slur when she talks. She's on a cane when she walks, but that's about it. For now. Come on in and see her. She's in the parlor."

"Dottie, our boys are here!" Rose said as she opened the door and ushered us inside. Braden and I moved toward the parlor where we found Dorothy in her chair. She tried to get up, but it was obviously difficult for her.

"Don't get up," I said, leaning down to hug her. Braden did the same.

"It's good to see you both," Dorothy said. Her speech was definitely off. "I'm glad you're here. We need to talk."

"Dottie, let's let the boys get settled upstairs. We can all talk at dinner," Rose said. "You're in your usual room, so feel free to go on up and get settled."

Braden and I took our bags upstairs to our room and decided to relax a little before going back downstairs.

"I'm worried about Dorothy," Braden said. "She doesn't look good."

"She really doesn't, I said." I was standing by the window looking out over the back yard where we got married. "I'm worried about her, too. And Rose. She can't run this whole place by herself if Dorothy can't help."

"Do you still want to move up here someday?" Braden asked.

"Well, yeah. Don't you?" I asked.

"Yeah, I do." Braden said. "But I thought we were going to retire here."

"That was the plan," I said. "But I don't see them making it that long. Even if you got a teaching job around here somewhere, I'm not planning to retire for at least another fifteen years. I might even go to work for the state before I retire. I just don't think we could move up here and run the place anytime soon."

"We did promise them we'd take it over," Braden said.

"I know. We'll come up with something to help them out. This place means too much to us to let it go," I said.

I moved over to the bed and sat down beside Braden. I put my arms around him and put my hand on the back of his head, drawing him close to me. Our lips met. He parted his lips to allow my tongue inside his mouth. We made out for several minutes. My hand found its way under this shirt where I ran my hands through the hair on his chest and rubbed his nipples. We separated long enough for me to pull his shirt over his head. He pulled mine over my head too. Both of us were naked from the waist up. I pushed him back on the bed and continued making out with him. I then moved down his body and sucked on his erect nipples, making him gasp and then laugh a little. His nipples were always ticklish. I moved down his torso, dipping my tongue into his belly button and then following his happy trail down to the waistband of his khaki shorts. I popped the button open and lowered the zipper to see that he had worn his charcoal gray knit boxers. I quickly grabbed the waistband of his shorts and his boxers and pulled them down his legs and off his feet, leaving him naked except for his ankle socks. Just for good measure, I pulled those off too.

Now that Braden was completely naked, I turned my attention to his erect cock, swirling my tongue under his foreskin before peeling it back and sucking on his head like a popsicle.

"Oh fuck that feels good," he moaned.

I decided to move to another one of my favorite activities: rimming Braden's butthole. I lifted his legs, pushing them back and exposing his hairy pink hole. While Braden held his legs back, I buried my face between his cheeks, inhaling his scent and enjoying his taste.

After several minutes of eating Braden's hole, he was ready for the next move.

"Josh, I need your cock! Fuck me!" Braden moaned.

I jumped off the bed long enough to pull down my own shorts and underwear, freeing my leaking cock from its prison. I reached into my bag and grabbed the tube of lube I had brought and gave my cock a thorough coating. I squirted a big glob onto my finger and worked it into Braden's tight asshole. I lined my cock up with his hole and pressed against it. Braden moaned and his hole gave way to my cock, allowing me to slide inside him.

The next few minutes were pure bliss as I fucked Braden's ass. All too soon, I felt the familiar tingling that told me I was about to flood Braden's rectum with my cum. I could tell he was getting close as well.

Just as I started to cum, Braden cried out that he was cumming as well. As my cum shot up into his bowels, his covered his stomach and chest. We came down from our powerful orgasms and softly kissed each other.

"Let's take a quick shower before all of this cum dries on me," Braden said.

We got into the shower together and made sure we were clean and free of any cum. We got dressed again and headed back downstairs to see if we could help Rose get ready for dinner.
