Blake's Saga

Book 5 – Chapter 6

A Secret

School is in session again, and Blake is excited about it. It's the start of his junior year. Today, he gets his schedule for the year and his new locker assignment. He has the following classes:

1st hour - Fitness and Conditioning – 1st semester with Mr. Elijah Price and Lifeguard training 2nd semester with Ms. Anna Stewart

2nd hour – English 11 2 semesters with Mrs. Susanna Hall

3rd-hour Anatomy and Physiology 2 semesters with Mrs. Laurel Lopez

4th hour – U.S. History 2 semesters with Mr. Amos Collins

5th hour – Drawing 1 and Drawing II – Mr. Felix Bell

Lunch B

6th hour – Assistant – Ms. Browning's room

7th hour – Spanish 1 – 2 semesters – with Ms. Hope Sanchez

There are several classes that he is happy to be taking; they are Lifeguard Training, Drawing 1 and 2, and, of course, helping out in Ms. Browning's room. He has the joy of having a new teacher in the school, Elijah Price. Elijah, unlike Ian, has a boyfriend named Nathan Sanchez. This year will see some changes here and there in Blake's life. This is normal for a teen's life, right? Who knows, maybe nothing will change. Ian is excited for the year as well. He'll have new kids as long as the ones from last year passed his class. He also plans to make friends with the school's new teacher, Mr. Pierce. Ian wants to do something cool with the family this school year but is unsure what to do. Life is going to be interesting.

***

Blake is happy to be back in school. Other students are delighted to be back, but that isn't true for all students. Blake isn't sure if he is ready for all of his classes, but he's glad to be back with all his friends. One thing about Ian and Trace is that they treasure education, and it's important that their kids also treasure education, and they want them to take it seriously. He's happy to be here where he can focus on wrapping up another year and learning more so that someday he can graduate, get into a good college, and then land a good job. For now, though, he'll focus on studying and having some fun. His dad is also hoping for a good year.

***

Ian is hoping for a good year as well. Each year, he looks forward to meeting his new students. He loves watching them when the lights go on, and they realize that science isn't so bad. He also loves working with the AP kids and getting them through the year. Ian hopes this year goes better for his family than last year.

***

Blake's 3rd hour class teacher , Mrs. Laurel Lopez has been at the school for as long as Ian has been there, and she loves science just as much as Ian does. She used to be a doctor who decided that she had enough of medicine and became a teacher. This isn't about her, though, this is about one of her students, and no, it's not Blake. Another student is sitting three rows over from Blake and is interested in one of his classmates. In fact, he can't get his eyes off of the kid. Now, this is where the story takes a twist. The kid that is being watched is none other than Blake.

`I have to get his attention somehow. I bet he doesn't even know that I'm alive.'

The kid thinks to himself as he takes notes and occasionally glances at Blake. The student would die if Blake approached him and spoke with him. All he can do now is stare and take in Blake's handsome face. One day, he'll find a way to get what he wants, and what he wants is for Blake to like him. The student's name is Jamal.

***

Blake's admirer is super shy, but physically, he isn't about to win a fight. Jamal really wouldn't win a fight. He's more of a poet than a fighter. This fellow student of Blake's is one of the nicest guys a person could ever meet. His friends would say that he is considerate, compassionate, and caring. Jamal just wants to get to know the teen sitting across from him. He's going to move slowly so he can take his time getting to know Blake. Blake steps out of the room to get a drink, and at the same time, Jamal gets up.

***

His mission to get Blake to notice him begins as Blake leaves the room. First, he has written a note to place in Blake's planner. As he walks by Blake's desk, he carefully pushes the planner to the ground. Reaching down, Jamal picks up the planner. As the planner is picked up, the student places his note amongst the pages of the planner. It's is put right back on the desk. After that, he continues to go to the pencil sharpener and sharpens the pencil. After getting it sharpened, the teen then returns to his seat.

***

Blake is glancing over his planner at lunch to see what homework he has so far. When he opens the notebook, the note from Jamal falls out of it and lands on the floor. He knows he didn't put the letter into the planner, so who did. The last time he received notes like this was from Ben and Rick. He doesn't want to relive Rick's notes. A bit of fear ran through him as he stared at it. He then notices a neatly drawn heart on the outside of the note. Surely, no one would draw a heart on a note if their intent was to bully him. Curious as to what the letter says, Blake opens it up. He begins to read the note.

"Dear Blake,

You don't know me, but I think you are one of the most handsome boys in our school. I know that you have lost your boyfriend, and I am sorry for that so sorry. I had to write you. I hope you don't think this is strange; I'm just shy. I'm not ready to approach you and speak with you, but I promise that I will, just be patient.

Signed an admirer"

Blake is beside himself at the moment. He doesn't know if he should be happy or scared out of his mind. He'll have to be patient to find out who exactly wrote him this note. Maybe he should show the note to his dads or a friend.

***

It's sixth hour, and Blake is on his way to a class he enjoys and has been looking forward to all day. Ms. Browning's room has always been a place to escape the day's stress. His dad and her classroom are escapes from the rest of the school. Maybe, she can make sense of the note. During a pause in the hour, Blake shows her the letter. She quietly reads over it. She eyes over her peer mentor and then goes back to the note. Sadly, she can't match the handwriting of any student assistant or her students.

"Blake, do you have any idea who this person is?"

Of course, Blake has no idea, so he shrugs his shoulders.

"I have no idea. I just don't know what to think."

Blake hopes that whoever gave him this note isn't dangerous. He can't help but hope that whoever is behind the letter will identify himself sooner rather then later.

"Keep me informed on the situation. If you need something from me on this, please let me know, okay?

Blake nods his head to her question. He intends to keep her posted on his secret admirer. Blake has one more class today; Spanish 1. Trace thinks this class just makes sense in today's world. Blake didn't want to take French or Germany. He can't wait for the end of the day when he can tell his dad about the note.

***

The final bell tolls, and Blake heads out for his dad's classroom. He's got one thing on his mind. It must be bugging him because he passes up his locker just to see his dad. He enters his dad's classroom. Ian is picking up his classroom because it would be too much to ask his students to clean up after themselves. Blake starts helping his dad just to speed things up. He doesn't want his dad distracted while he reads over the note. Luckily, Trace isn't so easily distracted, but Trace isn't here; Ian is. Ian smiles when he sees his son helping out in his classroom. He appreciates everything his son does for him and the family. Now that the classroom is straightened up, Blake sits down and digs out the note from his pocket.

"Dad, can you read this for me? I want your opinion on it."

Blake asks his dad as he smooths the note with his hand. Ian sits down next to his son sitting. The teacher realizes his son doesn't have his backpack or any of his books.

"I'll tell you what, you go get your stuff, and I'll read over the note."

Blake stands up, grabs his planner, and heads out of the room.

"I'll be back, Dad."

Blake leaves the classroom and heads for his locker. It doesn't take him long to get to his locker. He opens his locker, grabs his backpack, checks his planner, grabs only the books he needs for his homework, and then closes his locker. He heads back to the classroom. Ian's oldest son walks quickly back to his dad's room. The student enters Ian's room and sits down near his father.

"What do you think, Dad?"

Ian is quiet for a second and then looks at Blake.

"It sounds like this guy really likes you. The question is, who wrote you? The handwriting looks familiar, but I can't place it. How does it make you feel? Does it scare you?"

The young man was hoping that something would stick out to his dad. He might have remembered the handwriting; that would have helped him identify the kid who gave him the note.

"I'm curious who gave me the note; it was left in my planner. I found it at lunch. The note doesn't make me feel scared. I just want to know who wrote it. I hope he's not scared of me."

Ian looks at Blake. He's glad his son isn't scared of the note because he doesn't see a threat.

"Do you really think this guy is scared of you?"

Blake's dad quietly waits for his son to respond to the question. Blake's silence is just him thinking about his response to his dad.

"I hope that he's not scared of me."

Blake wouldn't want anyone to be scared of him. Ian wouldn't want anyone to be scared of his son either. He hopes whoever wrote this note is free of hate.

`Does my son even have a mean bone in his body?'

Blake is kind to everyone and knows little hate. He doesn't hate too many people, which is just how Ian and Trace want it. They know that hate is poison.

***

While Ian and Blake are in the classroom, a student peeks into the classroom to ask a question. The student looks in the direction of the teacher. When he notices who else is in the room, he retreats from the door without being seen. It's easier to withdraw than to stick around and take the chance of being caught before he's confident enough to be seen. The student doesn't want to stand out to Blake at the moment. No one saw Jamal stick his head into the classroom. Jamal was happy to see his crush. However, it makes him feel a little anxious to be in a position where Blake could see him.

***

Ian and Blake decide to head out and go home. As they get into the car, Ian glances at Blake and smiles.

"I need you to show your dad that note."

Ian wants Trace to see it. Trace will have something to say about the secret admirer's note. It might be good, or it might be bad, all depending on his Trace's mood.

"I'll make sure Dad sees it."

Blake tells his dad. Trace would be upset if Ian saw the note and Blake didn't share it with him. Blake's note is apt to make Trace ask a bunch of questions. It's possible that he would be worried about the letter. It will be interesting to see how Trace responds to it.

***

Blake and Ian sit down with Trace, so they can speak with Trace together.

"Hey guys, I feel like I'm being set up for something. What's going on?"

Trace says with a smile on his face. He has no idea what he's about to be hit with something from his oldest son and his husband.

"Blake has something to show you. Blake, show Dad your note."

Blake wasn't nervous about showing Ian the note, but he is worried about showing it to Trace. He is scared that Trace will be upset over the secret admirer thing. Blake reaches into his pocket and pulls out the note. Blake hands the letter over to his Dad.

"Someone put this note into my planner at the end of my third hour today."

Blake tells Trace. His son watches as Trace watches his dad read over the note.

"Blake, I'm a little worried about the secret admirer thing. If you are comfortable with it, what can I say? You need to be careful because either this guy is honest with you, or he's lying. I can't give you anymore council than that, Son."

Trace is being honest with Blake. He isn't sure what else to say to his oldest son. Blake was hoping that Trace's police background might be able to tell him something, but there is nothing for him coming from his dad's mouth.

"I'll be careful, but it does make me a little nervous."

Trace can understand that Blake is a bit nervous. In truth, it makes him a little nervous too. Will there be more notes given to him? Blake is sure that his dad is keeping something back, which isn't Trace's style. Blake decides to push Trace a little.

"Dad, if you're keeping something from me, please don't; I can handle whatever you say."

His dad isn't keeping anything back, though. You can't tell that to Blake, though.

"I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I'm not holding anything back from you."

Trace tells his son with a very serious look on his face. Ian pats his son on the back, letting him know he supports him. Blake gets up and heads up to his room.

***

After dinner, Trace and Ian sit in the living room while the boys are up in their rooms relaxing. Ian will see if Trace was, in fact, keeping something back from Trace. Sometimes, Trace will do that if he doesn't want to upset Blake. The question is how will he react to Ian's questioning. Just as Ian was about to question Tracel, Trace speaks up.

"Hey Babe, I'm assuming that Blake showed you that note from his secret admirer. I'm curious what you thought about it?"

Ian is quiet for a second while he gathers his thoughts.

"I guess my mind was stuck on trying to figure out who the kid was that had placed the note in the first part. My second thought was, is our son ready to be in a relationship. I guess I let go of my opinions and let Blake tell me what was running through his mind. He clued me in on what he thought, and that was all I needed to hear."

Ian hopes that before Trace forms his opinions and sets his foot down, he'll give Blake a listen and then allow himself to be guided by his son's thoughts. Blake knows if he's ready or not and will let them know if he needs them. Ian can tell that Trace actually listened to what he had to say.

"So you don't seem to be too worried?"

Trace asks as he studies his husband's face.

"Honestly, Blake is going to do what he wants to do. At this point, we don't know if we need to worry about this admirer or not, so why worry about the admirer? If Blake isn't ready to have someone in his life, he'll let us know, and when this guy shows his face and Blake still isn't ready, he'll let him know. All we can do is be there just in case things go wrong."

Trace heard what Ian said. He's concerned over the identity of this guy. He doesn't think that Blake is ready for someone yet.

"Ian, I don't like not knowing who this person is; it could be anyone."

Ian nods his head as he agrees with his husband.

"This is why we need to trust our son's wisdom."

Ian tells his husband. Trace decides to put his trust in his husband's words and his son's wisdom too.

"Any idea who this kid is?"

Trace asks Ian if he knows who the admirer might be. Ian has no clue who this kid might be. Still, the question remains in Trace's mind, and who knows if he'll get an answer to his question. He hopes that Blake won't suffer because of this person.

***

Juan sits down with Blake, and they talk about the note. Juan thinks the letter is exciting, while Blake is slightly more reserved. No one knows that there is something else on its way. Blake doesn't know what to think right now. It's a new day and a new chance at mixing things up. He wants a fresh start for a new day. Juan tells him not to worry about the admirer. Blake is trying not to worry that he doesn't know who is crushing on him. Things will be interesting given time, and Blake's friend will be there to support him.

***

Blake and Juan head towards Blake's locker since Juan and Blake have the same class together with Mr. Price. On his locker, he finds a piece of paper taped to the locker.

"What is this?"

Juan says as he removes the paper from the locker. He hands it over to his friend so Blake can read the note.

"Dear Blake,

I hope you had an excellent first day at school. I had a great day. I noticed that you have a good mix of friends. I can't wait to meet them, and I hope they like me. I promise that I'll meet you eventually. I have been keeping my eyes on you, so I can see what type of guy you are. I've come to the conclusion that you are a good guy. I have heard through the grapevine that you have two dads, which is amazing. Your brother is a great guy that I've heard. One of your dads is a cop, and the other dad works here as a teacher. I'll keep my eyes on you.

Signed Admirer"

This time, Juan doesn't smile.

"I don't know about you, but I find it weird that he knows about your family. Even worse, that he's flat out telling you that he's watching you. I'm surprised he's not mentioning your friends by their names."

Juan is right. This note is a bit creepy. Blake doesn't think it's threatening, though.

"Wow, I don't know what to think of this note. I agree it is a bit creepy."

Blake knows that Trace isn't going to like this note. It's going to make Trace really upset. Ian may not like it either. Blake will just have to see what his dad thinks about it.

***

Blake goes off to his classes and has a great day. By the end of the day, he is ready to see his dad. He digs out the note for his dad to read.

"Dad, I got another note today. This time, he put it on my locker."

He gives his dad the note and then gives him a chance to read it.

"Wait, this kid knows you have two dads and a little brother. He knows this without even talking to you? Trace isn't going to like this dude. You had better prepare yourself for it. I am not sure how I feel about it."

Blake is a little unhappy about what his dad has said. He's also not happy with the secret admirer for sending this note. Then again, what else can you say to the secret admirer since he doesn't know this kid? Since Trace isn't going to be home right away, they decide to head out to Collin's elementary school. While at the elementary school, Ian calls his husband to tell him about the note. Ian has Blake read the new letter to his dad. Trace is upset. He likes to protect his family, and the fact that this person knows about the family just feels threatening.

"Blake, I put my trust in what your dad told me yesterday, but this note just feels wrong. I'm sorry, Son, but I am a little upset."

Blake knew that his dad would be upset over the note. Especially since Ian is a little upset over it too.

"I get it, Dad. I don't like the note either. It feels a little intrusive."

Trace agrees with his son. Ian watches as Collin heads out with his class. Ian has to get out of the car and walk up to Collin's teacher because, typically, Trace is there with his cop car.

"Dad!"

Collin runs out to his dad and is called back by his teacher. When Ian approaches the teacher, he is met with a smile from the teacher.

"Hi, Daddy!"

Collin's teacher gives Ian the take-home folder, and Ian takes his dad's hands. Together, they walk to the car. Blake just wants to get home so he can relax a little.

"Hi Blake, I had a good day at school. We made ice cream in science."

Collin is clearly excited about the ice cream. Sometimes he shares the exciting things with his dads, and other times he shares them only with his brother."

Today, he's sharing it with Blake.

"Did you save me any?"

Blake asks with a smile on his face.

"No, there wasn't enough. I'm sorry."

Blake smiles at his brother.

"It's all good, Collin."

Blake tells his brother.

"Daddy, we can make it?"

Collin asks as he points to his folder.

"Maybe we can make ice cream for dessert tonight?"

Ian says as he looks into the mirror so he can see his youngest son.

"I want to show Daddy how to do it."

Collin can't wait to show Trace how to make the ice cream in a baggie. Blake loves the idea. Trace is going to love the ice cream. He loves things that the family can do together. Trace loves to have fun too, so this activity would be great as far as he is concerned. It doesn't take them long to get home.

***

Trace and Jay are teamed up tonight since their partners are out for training. Trace has been talking with Jay about the notes that Blake has received.

"You know Trace, I get being nervous about the note, especially that last one, but at the same time, I say let Blake figure this out as things go. It doesn't sound threatening to me."

Trace gets what Jay is saying but doesn't agree with everything he said. Blake needs a chance to figure things out on his own, but at the same time, it's up to his dads to provide experience-filled advice. Jay doesn't see a threat in the notes, and maybe there isn't anything threatening, but Trace can't help but worry.

"I'm sorry, Jay. I just find it worrisome that this kid knows about us. Maybe I am worried because I'm a police officer and reading too much into it. I just don't want my son to be hurt by this kid."

Jay shakes his head in agreement with his partner's comments.

"Trace, I'm not surprised that he knows about Ian, but yeah, I'm slightly surprised that he knows about you. I think that as officers, we sometimes read too much into things. I find myself falling into work mode when on dates at times."

Jay is correct, and Trace himself has been known to fall into work mode when meeting new people regarding the kids or even Ian. He wants his family safe, even if it means policing outside work. Ian doesn't like it when Trace acts like an officer at home, although there have been times when it comes in handy to have Trace as his husband. Ian knows that Trace will do what needs to be done for his family, even if that means being a police officer at home. Blake has seen Trace go into police mode since he's came to live with Ian and Trace.

"I could be the wrong Trace, but I think you're barking up the wrong tree. Give the kid a chance, and you might just be surprised."

Jay giving Trace some great advice. Now all Trace has to do is take the advice to heart.

"Well, I'll do my best to give the kid a chance once he drops this crazy secret admirer business. I don't like this kind of surprise."

Trace tells his partner. The guys stop discussing the subject.

***

Blake sits with his friends at lunch the next day at school. What they don't know is that they are being watched. The person watching them is Jamal, Blake's secret admirer. He is planning his next step in this little game. He can't wait for the time when he feels like he can step out and show himself to Blake. He wonders what Blake will be, and he hopes in the meantime that he doesn't offend him in any way. After lunch, everyone goes off in different directions.
