LIVES CHANGED CHAPTER FIVE: BACK TO SCHOOL

The summer flew by, and September arrived as anything but what might be expected for that month. Schools would normally be starting fall classes, but the student strike was still going strong. Election offices across the state were swamped as recall petitions had been turned in for virtually every elected official in the state and nomination papers were being turned in for those who hoped to replace those thrown out of office. The governor was one of the biggest targets of the recall petitions.

Elizabeth and her group of co-conspirators continued to meet in the seedy restaurant on the far side of town throughout the summer, and were meeting again. Elizabeth waited for the rest of her group to arrive. She ordered a double scotch on-the-rocks and was seated so that she was facing away from the door. Maurice and a younger man walked in. Maurice ordered two beers and, seeing Elizabeth, Maurice led the way to her table. He placed a beer in front of the younger man and kept one for himself.

"Maurice, who the hell is this?" Elizabeth asked.

"Relax, this is Brady, the son of a close friend and the older brother of one of the boys that Malcolm put in the hospital," Maurice answered.

"What the hell is he doing here? You know this is a private meeting."

"Ma'am, I know this is a private meeting, but I told Maurice I wanted to be here. I want to get even with that prick for what he did to my brother and his friends, " Brady stated. "Now I have my chance and I know I can help you."

"You think you can help? Why, you're just a kid yourself. Do you know what it is that we are going to do?" Elizabeth asked as she tried to stare Brady down.

"That is your first mistake: I am not a kid. I am older than I look. As for what you are planning, yeah, I know all about that, too. You want Malcolm dead. The second mistake is that you don't know shit about me, lady. Trust me, I can be your worst nightmare."

"Maurice, that big mouth of yours is going to get us all thrown in jail. As for you Mr. Hot Shot, if you're so damn good then go out and shoot the little bastard and save us all a lot of time meeting here."

"Fine, but I want half in advance and I want a gun.

"Well, I know nothing about guns, so deal with Maurice on that," Elizabeth snapped. "As for half in advance, not a chance. You'll get a thousand up front the rest when it's done."

"You want the job done, I get half now. There is no way you're gonna stiff me out of forty-nine thousand bucks. I know about you getting thrown out of the brat's house, too."

"Fine then, I'll give Maurice the money tomorrow, but this is the last time I ever want to see you."

"Don't worry, you won't be seeing me again unless you double-cross me. Do that and I'll come after you," Brady said out loud, then mumbled "bitch!" under his breath before getting up and walking out of the restaurant.

The others had shown up and they talked for the rest of the afternoon about what was going on and what was going to happen.

As this meeting was going on, over at the elections office the staff was in a tizzy. Nomination papers had been filed that placed Malcolm's name on the list of candidates. After they called the newspapers to inform them that Malcolm was running, the staff went back to work on the piles of both recall and nomination petitions. No one knew who submitted it, but somehow Malcolm Daniels' name would be on the ballot as a candidate for governor.

When the papers got ahold of the story, a large print headline exploded across the front page. That wasn't the only thing that exploded: when Malcolm saw it, he freaked out. His dad and Papa were sitting in the kitchen laughing. "This isn't funny, Dad. I just turned fifteen, and now some people want me as governor."

"You're right, Son, it isn't funny-it's hilarious."

"Oh hell! I'm going to my room!"

"Okay, Governor Daniels," Papa quipped.

"Not you, too," Malcolm scowled as he stormed out of the kitchen.

Malcolm went to his room and was working on his newest story, something he hadn't done for a while and he really wanted to finish it, when he was interrupted. "Malcolm, there is a phone call for you," Richard called upstairs.

"Who is it?" Malcolm yelled back.

"He says he is the President."

"Tell him I am on my way," Malcolm yelled as he was running down the stairs, almost tripping on the last step in his haste. "Hello, sir!" Malcolm gasped.

"Good morning, Mr. Daniels. I hope you are well?" Ben asked.

" I am, sir, but I have been kind of busy, and somebody put my name in to be the governor," Malcolm sighed.

"I read about that in the Washington Post, and I have the people here running wild to see if there is anything against it. You know that to be president, you have to be over thirty-five."

"That I was aware of, and I just thought it was the same for other offices, too."

"That is what my staff is trying to find out, and if there is nothing in the law to prevent it, then I would suggest that you take up the challenge."

"Sir, are you saying I should accept this?"

"Yes, I am, but please don't say anything to the press until my staff finds some answers for you. If you can't run, then maybe you can talk your dad into doing it."

"Okay, sir, I won't talk to the press, and I will talk to my dad about running."

"Now, the other reason I called is because I was wondering if you would like to come back to Washington and speak to a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives. They seem to be having problems with a new school board policy that is in front of them."

"Sir, I would be happy to come and speak, but I promised my little brothers and best friend that next time I went to Washington they could come, too. May I bring my two brothers and best friend?"

"Of course you can bring them. I am sure they would like to see the White House and Capitol, and bring your dad along if he wants to come."

"I'm sure he would, and thank-you, sir. When do you want me there?"

"Tony and his team will bring you up here in two weeks and my office will pay for everything."

"Thank-you, sir. I will see you two weeks from Monday."

"No, Mr. Daniels, I thank you and I hope that there is nothing stopping you from running for governor."

"That would be a first, I bet. I'm not even old enough to vote for myself."

"It would. Now remember to stick close to your security."

"Yes, sir."

Hanging up Malcolm turned to his dad. He wants me to come to Washington again to speak to Congress in two weeks. He says I can bring my brothers and Patrick, and you if you want to come with us."

"Then I guess you'd better call Patrick's parents and ask if it's okay. I think it would be good idea to have me there, especially since there will be four of you going," Richard smiled as he looked at Malcolm.

" Yeah, I'll call them right now."

"You mean we getta go with him this time?" Aaron squeaked.

"Yes, Son, you surely do," Richard laughed.

" Wowwy! Zeke, Zeke, we getta go with Malcolm."

"Go where?"

"Washinton, DC!" Aaron said as he ran around the kitchen.

"Kewl. I bet we have loads of fun."

"Uh huh."

Grabbing the phone, Malcolm called over to the Jacobs' house. "May I speak to Patrick, please?" Malcolm asked when the phone was answered.

"One minute, Malcolm. Hey, Pat, it's Malcolm for you," Robert yelled.

"Hey, dude. What's up?" Patrick answered when he grabbed to phone from his older brother.

"Hey, you wanna go to Washington with me and my brothers?" Malcolm asked.

"Sure! When?"

"We leave a week from Sunday so we get there for Monday."

"Okay, I better ask the 'rents first. Hang on."

"Yeah, you better. Who knows what they might say?"

"Okay, I'll call you back when I know for sure."

"Okay, I will talk at you soon."

Two hours later Patrick called back. "Yeah, I can go and thanks for asking, but what are we doing there?"

"Well, you and my brothers get to see the White House and meet the President. I have to speak in front of the whole Congress. Hey, do you know who put my name in for governor?"

"No, dude. When we read it in this morning's paper we thought it was a joke."

"Well, it isn't."

"Cool, so you're going to run?"

"I can't say, but I have been told to stay away from the news reporters for now."

"Good idea. Say, would it be okay if I came over for the rest of the weekend?"

"Okay, see you when you get here."

After talking with Patrick, Malcolm sat at the kitchen table for a few minutes. "Zeke, would you take Aaron in and watch some TV for a bit, please. I have to talk with Papa and Dad in private," Malcolm asked, as he gave the two boys a hug.

"Yeah, okay, but you gonna watch a movie with us tonight?" Zeke asked.

"Well, your buddy Patrick is coming over, so maybe the four of us can watch one."

"Okay," Zeke giggled, as he hugged Malcolm tight, then grabbed Aaron's hand and left the kitchen.

"Dad, Papa, can we talk for a bit, please?" Malcolm asked as he grabbed a Pepsi from the fridge.

"Sure, what's on your mind?" Papa answered.

"Well Papa, I was wondering if the only reason you turned on Uncle Marcus was because he was gay?"

"Malcolm, yes, that was the reason. At the time I didn't understand it. In fact I refused to even try to understand. Now that I know differently, it doesn't make what I did easier to forgive. It wasn't his fault, nor anything that his mother or I did. It was just how he was born," Papa answered.

"So, if he was still around, you would accept his lifestyle?"

"Yes, I would. I know that the life of a gay person isn't easy, but I would support him in every way I could."

"What about you dad?" Malcolm asked as he glanced towards his dad sitting there.

"I have to agree with Papa, and I would support my brother, or any family member."

"Good, because I have to tell you something."

"Whatever it is, lets have it so we can deal with it," Richard said with a smile.

"Papa, Dad, you see... Well, I'm gay and I kinda love Patrick, although he doesn't know yet," Malcolm stuttered.

"Is that all? Hell, I thought it was something major," grinned Richard as he stood up and gave Malcolm a hug. "Son, that took a lot of strength, and I am very proud of you."

"So am I, Malcolm. Like I said a while back, I will not turn my back on you, I will be with you all the way," Papa smiled.

"Now, when are you going to tell Patrick?" Papa asked.

"Tonight! I want to take him to Mike's Place for dinner and tell him there. I don't want to go to Washington with this bugging me."

"Good idea, now go call Mike's and get a table set up," Papa laughed.

"I don't have to get a table, but I should call and ask him for something nice for dinner," Malcolm smiled as he grabbed the phone and called the restaurant.

Once everything was set with Maggie and Mike and happy about his dad and Papa being so accepting of him, Malcolm went and joined his brothers in the front room. Malcolm had just gotten comfortable when Patrick walked in followed by Donnie and Tony. "Malcolm, what is this I hear about you going out tonight?" Donnie asked.

"Yes, I am going out. Is there a problem with that, and what's with the attitude?" Malcolm asked.

"No, there isn't a problem with you going out, and I apologize. It's just that it came as a surprise when your dad told us," Donnie said. "What time do you plan on leaving?"

"Well, we have to be at Mike's Place at six, so I was thinking of maybe five-thirty," Malcolm said with a grin.

"What are you two talking about?" Patrick interrupted.

"Oh, nothing really. Just that you and I are going out for dinner. I already told Dad and Papa, so relax," Malcolm laughed.

"Alright, but Malcolm, we gotta talk," Patrick said.

"Pat, you should take your bag upstairs," Tony stated firmly, staring at Patrick and then at his bag in the doorway.

"My name is Patrick, not Pat," snapped Patrick at Tony. "A pat is something you give a person."

"Okay, I'm sorry, but please take your bag upstairs."

"Sure, and sorry I snapped at you. It's just a pet peeve of mine that only my older brother gets away with."

"I'll get over it," Tony laughed.

"Hurry up, Patrick, I wanna snuggle," Aaron squeaked as he gave a big yawn.

"Okay, leach, I'll be right back."

After the four boys watched a movie it was time for Malcolm and Patrick to get ready to leave for dinner, so letting his brothers know that he and Patrick had to change, the two headed upstairs. Once in Malcolm's bedroom, Patrick closed the door and sat on the bed. "Malcolm, can we talk for a minute?" Patrick asked as he stared at the floor.

"Sure, what's up?" Malcolm asked as he watched Patrick sitting nervously.

"Malcolm, well, I have to tell you something, well maybe ask you something, also."

"What is it, buddy? You can tell or ask me anything," Malcolm replied.

"Malcolm, I love you and want you to be my boyfriend," Patrick said his words tumbling out so fast Malcolm almost missed them.

"Patrick, are you sure this is what you want?"

"Yes, ever since that first day when you knocked me on my butt I haven't stopped thinking about you.

Smiling Malcolm walked over and gently lifting Patrick up and looked him straight in the eyes. "Patrick, you have stood with me through all of this, and I may not say this right, but, I love you, too, and, well, I want us to be boyfriends. So I am saying yes." Malcolm gave Patrick a quick kiss on the lips, then laughed and pushed him onto the bed as he ran to have his shower.

With his shower done, Malcolm walked back into his bedroom drying his hair, forgetting that Patrick was there, until he heard a gasp. Quickly dropping his towel Malcolm blushed and stammering tried to apologize.

"No need to apologize, Malcolm, I have seen you like this before, but I kinda like the private showing better," Patrick laughed then blushed as he ran for the shower, trying to hide his excitement as he went by Malcolm.

"Hurry up, Patrick," Malcolm called through the bathroom door, "we have to leave in like 15 minutes."

"Okay, I'll be out in a minute," Patrick replied as he shut the water off.

Both boys dressed and headed back downstairs. Malcolm went into the kitchen to let his Papa and dad know that they were about to leave. "Papa, Patrick and I are going now," Malcolm called out.

"Okay, you boys have fun," Papa answered. "I will tell your dad you've gone."

"Thanks, but where is he?" Malcolm asked.

"I thought he was in the front room."

"Okay, well, we are gone."

Dinner for the boys was great. Mike had taken and placed a couple of portable walls around a table. Maggie had gone out and got some carnations and roses for a center piece.

As they boys were seated, Maggie came over and, smiling, poured Malcolm and Patrick a glass of sparkling apple juice. "I know, Malcolm, that you were wishing for something like champagne, but both Mike and I agreed that you're both too young," Maggie said with a smile as she walked away. "Your salads will be out in a minute."

"Thanks, Maggie, you're the best," Patrick said.

As the dinner slowly wound down, the boys sat back and relaxed a bit. "Malcolm, why did it take us so long to realize just what was happening, I mean between us?"

"I don't know. For me I guess it was the fear of losing, not only you, but my Papa also," Malcolm answered.

"Yeah, I can understand that, I feel that way too. I mean, Robert accepts me, but I don't know how the rest of my family will react when I tell them."

Malcolm was just about to answer when he looked up and saw his mother standing along the wall. "Well, Malcolm," Elizabeth started, "I see you have your trashy little friend with you tonight. Oh, dear, am I interrupting you?" she smirked."

"Where is Tony?" Patrick whispered.

"He's just around the corner." Malcolm answered his eyes still glued his mother. "Yes, mother you are interrupting our dinner. Now, if you would please leave I would like that very much."

"Why you pompous little bastard, I should slap that look right off your face."

"What look is that mother? Oh, you mean the one of dislike, distrust, anger and loathing."

Standing, Malcolm moved so that he stood between his mother and Patrick. "Mother get out of here. I don't want you here."

Before Malcolm could say anything more, Elizabeth quickly reached up and slapped his face, leaving a small handprint on his cheek.

"Ma'am, you are under arrest for assault on a minor and disturbing the peace," Tony said as he stepped up and placed her in handcuffs. "You have the right to remain silent. If you give up that right, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to speak to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you. If you choose to answer questions without an attorney, you can stop at anytime and an attorney will be appointed for you. Knowing and understanding your rights as I have explained them to you, are you willing to answer my questions without an attorney present?"

"I am going to get you for this, Malcolm Daniels, even if it is the last thing I do," Elizabeth screamed as she was led to the front door.

"Are you two okay?" Donnie asked as he stepped in to check on the two boys."

"Oh yeah, that bitch isn't about to ruin this day," Malcolm grinned as he turned and sat back down.

Donnie returned to his seat and Maggie brought in the boys' dessert.

"Here you go boys. Would you two like more to drink?" Maggie asked as she placed on the table two large pieces of chocolate cake with a dark chocolate frosting, white edgings and a cherry sitting in the center. The boys sat there, first looking at each other and then at the slices of cake. Before either one started to eat their cake, Patrick reached over and slowly took Malcolm's hand in his and then took the cherry off his cake and slowly fed it to Malcolm. "I love you Malcolm," Patrick whispered.

After chewing the cherry, Malcolm leaned over and kissed Patrick's lips. "I love you too, Patrick." Then Malcolm fed Patrick the cherry off of his piece of cake. They were once more gently kissing over the table when Maggie quietly slipped in and startled the boys with a flash of light from her camera.

"MAGGIE!!" Malcolm screamed in surprise, blushing bright red at being caught."

"Oh, relax you two. I have known for a while now how you two fell about each other. I'm just glad you finally told each other how you felt. Don't worry I will keep your secret safe, and will also get you each a copy of the photo."

As the boys sat finishing their cakes and drinks, Tony had Elizabeth at his side as they were waiting for the US Marshalls to arrive to transport Elizabeth.

"Why are you protecting that little shit? He's nothing but a damn faggot" Elizabeth exclaimed.

"Shut it, lady, and I use that word loosely. I am doing my job and following orders," Tony snapped.

"Yeah, right, who would?" Elizabeth started but stopped short when she saw a large black van pulling up.

"Your ride is here. Now behave and get in the back."

"You expect me to ride in that thing?"

"Yes, and you can get in the hard way or the easy way; one way or another really doesn't matter to me."

As she looked inside, Elizabeth's face lost all of its color. In the center of the van was a steel chair bolted to the floor complete with leg straps and restraints to hold a person's wrists. For the guards, there were comfortable form-fitting chairs. I refuse to get in this thing," Elizabeth screamed.

"Oh, you will get in there," A female Marshal stated as she grabbed Elizabeth's arm. Now move your ass."

Elizabeth started to struggle and scream even louder when the female Marshal grabbed her cuffed hands and lifted them towards her head. "Ouch, bitch, that hurt!"

Elizabeth was still struggling with the Marshal when Malcolm and Patrick walked out the door of the restaurant. Hearing his mother swearing and screaming Malcolm walked over.

"Oh, Mother dear, such language from a lady." Turning away, Malcolm and Patrick both started to giggle, when Malcolm stopped and turning back and looked at his mother. "Oh, and Mother, do enjoy your new home." Malcolm said with a huge grin.

"Donnie, make sure the boys get home safely, it looks like I might be here for a while," Tony told his partner.

"Don't worry, they will be safe with me," Donnie answered as he stood behind the boys.
