Chapter 42: Birthday

I found myself sitting by the lake, causing waves to crash and I heard someone walk up.

"How are you," Xavier asked, " I heard about your situation, StormCat."

"I'm mighty." I smiled, " I'm not StormCat anymore."

"Oh, then who are you?" Xavier asked.

"I'm Legacy." I said, looking back onto the lake.

"Legacy?" Professor Xavier asked.

"Yeah, cause wherever I go I can't seem to get away from the one you and Magneto have made." I sighed, " The world isn't ready for this yet. I'm not ready."

"The world is changing. You have a choice." Professor Xavier smiled.

"A choice?" I asked, " Change with it or Get lost beneathe it."

"Can't I just get lost." I asked.

"You will always be found." Professor Xavier said, " They will never stop looking. But something else seems to be bothering you."

"I've just been hearing voices. Voices of people who are really, really dead." I said quickly.

"Your mother?" he asked.

"No." I said sadly, " You miss her, don't you."

"I do, indeed. You never recover." Professor said regretfully.

"You rebuild." I said, glancing back at the Mansion, " So, there's another mutant, isn't there?"

"Yes, but you have a more important task and I wouldn't dream of taking you away from it." Xavier said, wheeling around...literally.

"You're really not gonna help, are you?" I asked.

"This is a task assigned specifically for you." Xavier smiled.

I threw a rock into the lake. A simple action that went further and further. Though I had let go of the rock, I felt it sink until it hit the bottom. I felt it, laying there. It didn't feel, yet it felt everything. It didn't see, yet it saw everything. It was life. Life always repeated itself, almost never in the same, exact form, but it did. I had regained control of my life and as much as I liked it, I also loved a little part of the loss of control. Letting go. It felt so freeing. Losing myself in everything. I would have to, if worse came to worse, I would have to lost myself in everything. I opened my eyes, closed myself and saw the water fall and the rock I had set at the bottom of the lake float back in front of me. It was then that his epiphany hit him. He stood up and ran back to the mansion as fast as he could.

The X-Men came with me to Genosha and I walked as fast as I could, trying to get to the meeting before it was over. I could arguing when I was outside the door and I threw my hands up and the door slammed open. As the doors swung, all talking stopped. They all looked at me as I walked up the isle of the church. Right foot, left foot, right foot, left foot. That's all I could think as I walked. Soon, I found myself in front of all the mutants. Magneto stood to my left and Xavier stood to my right. As I began to talk, there was a ruckus throughout the hall.

"What do you have to say?" Julio asked.

I cleared my throat, " I thought a long time about this and...I couldn't find anything to say..." I said, causing some cheers, then boos, " But the fact that...it's wrong."

"That's all?" Roscar smiled.

"Isn't that enough? That it was wrong that they did it to you? To us? We could easily bring about a war. We could probably even kick some ass and kill some innocent people...sound fun. Innocent women and children dying for what? Revenge? No matter how hard we fight, they're not coming back." I frowned, holding my tears.

"They didn't care about our innocents." a spectator shouted.

"And you wanna do the same? Hypocritical? Just a little." I said quickly.

"Who did you lose? You don't know how we feel!" Someone else shouted.

"Don't you dare!" I shouted, pointing to the mutant, " I lost everything! I lost my potential boyfriend, my friends...I lost my mother. So, when I was thinking, I asked myself what she would think and say and...she would want me to tell you that it's wrong." I said seriously, " It's wrong."

"We take a vote." Roscar said.

"No vote. the X-Men and I have talked about it. If you do this, we're going to fight you. We swore to protect the world and the innocents who live on it." I said sadly, " By doing this, you are breaking the peace that my GRANDFATHER worked so hard to build."

"You would attack us?" Roscar asked.

"No." I said simply, " We'll protect everyone else."

"What makes you think we won't kill you as you stand?" Roscar asked.

I gritted my teeth and looked out onto them," Go ahead...I've died before. A few times and I can honestly say, it won't do any good." I said through gritted teeth.

"Charles, surely you..." Roscar turned to him.

Xavier put his hand up, " I couldn't have said it better myself." he smiled up at me.

"So, vote." I stopped.

"What is it?" Xavier asked.

"It's my birthday. The calender," I pointed to the Calender, " The 10th, my birthday."

"How could you forget?" Julio asked.

"I'm trying to help you." I said, " For the past few years, I have tried my hardest to be a normal kid, but I kind of accepted that I'm not normal and I'm not a kid, not anymore. It took me eighteen years to figure that out and now I'm sure of it. I see it. Got it. With that, comes the fact, that no one has the right to vengeance."

"Why not?" Roscar hissed.

"If I have to tell you that, then you are worse than the people you're trying to fight." I said, smiling at Professor Xavier as I turned and walked away. As I walked past all the faces, I found myself smiling and as I opened the church door and let the flood of light hit me...I walked out into the new city and looked around at all of the empty shops and then I noticed the kids. There were a few kids playing soccer on the street, some green, some blue, some other colors, and some looked normal, but one kid sat on the ground. As I moved closer, I noticed that his knee had a huge cut on it. I crouched down and touched, causing him to recoil and I threw my hands up, " Hey, I'm sorry...I just...What happened?" I asked.

"I fell. The other kids told me I couldn't play because I fell." the child said. As he studied me, his face changed, then he smiled, " You're Pane."

"How'd you know that?" I asked.

"You and the X-Men saved us from the bad man." the kid said.

"The X-Men saved you, but yeah. What's your name?" I asked.

"Wes." the kid said.

"Hi, wes." I said quickly, " So, while the adults are in the meeting, you guys are out here?"

"Most of us. Some are at home. Just depends." the ki...Wes said, " Aren't you going to ask what I can do?"

"Why would I ask that?" I asked.

"Everyone does." Wes said sadly.

I helped him up, " Nobody's the same. Besides, it really doesn't matter." I smirked.

"You're a hero." the kid said.

"I'm nobody's hero." I said quickly.

"You're my hero." Wes smiled, " If you don't want to be a hero, you might want to leave Genosha." he said.

"Look ki...Wes, everybody's a hero. You just gotta know that you can do anything." I said softly.

"Show us what you can do." a kid said, stopping the soccer game. The rest of the kids came to us and crowded around us, trying to make room for everyone.

"Sure. I mean, the circus is me." I said, concentrating hard on everything around me. I could see everything, even though I closed my eyes and reached, my mind roaming the area, and I stopped. I felt myself invade the kids mind. Creep into their thoughts. I stopped and expanded farther and I felt something strange. I felt something scary and I opened my eyes.

"Well." the kid said.

I looked around and levitated the kids into the air, then put them down, " You guys should go." I said quickly.

"Why?" Wes asked.

"I don't know." I said slowly.

Jean

I dropped to the ground quickly, shielding the kids telekinetically. I looked up to see someone levitating in the distance. I stood and watched the little kids scamper off. I looked around, noticing how alone I was now. I walked farther into the road and stopped. A burst of electricity shot past me and I dodged a little, looking upward.

"Tin can?" I asked, looking up at Doctor Doom.

"Long time, no see, Pane." Doctor Doom said menacingly, " Prepare to meet your end."

"You're gonna end me?" I asked.

"No." he chuckled and at that moment the Earth beneath me began to crumble and break apart and hands began to spring from the ground. I was shocked tried to step back, but I stepped on someone's hand. There was a short roar and Doctor Doom hit the ground around me with lightning and it caved! As I fell, I saw only darkness and only felt the wind as I fell.
