Chapter 29: SwEeT & lOw

Davis: Fear. It runs everyone's life. The fear of losing, of failing, or of dying. I guess you could say that it's about the hardest thing in life. Fear can touch the hardest person, making them vulnerable and allow different reactions.

I sat in my room, watching Cloverfield. The giant monster tore through downtown as the soap opera unfolded. Personally, I hated Beth and wanted Rob to get with that Marylena chick. It was like poetry. Uh oh, she blew up! Looks like that's not gonna happen. There was a knock at the door and I tensed up.

It was Kya, " Hey, umm, just wanted to see if you wanted to come down for dinner." she asked.

"No." I said quickly.

"You haven't left this room sin..."

"No!" I shouted, " No. I just don't want to."

Kya looked shaken and threw on a weak smile, " It's okay...it's okay. Ummm, I'll bring it up." she said, waddling away.

I exhaled, turning back to the t.v., I watched the helicopter take off and wondered was the movie over. They lifted into the sky and I paused it. I didn't want to see the rest, especially if that's the end. The monster was too real, but too fake. He didn't need to be that big or have those many teeth. All he had to do was be real.

"Honey, are you sure you're alright?" Davis' mom asked.

Davis sighed, " I'm great." he said.

"Liz, leave him alone." Kerry, his father, sighed, " He said he's alright. Give him space."

"Look, he's my child. My baby." Elizabeth said, " He could have gotten hurt."

"There were other people there." Davis said, " They could've been hurt too."

"What were you doing over your br..." Kerry paused, looking at Elizabeth, who eyed him, " With them."

"Harmon sent a text from Christina's phone." Davis explained

"Harmon? A first name basis?" Elizabeth asked, " Kerry, this isn't good."

"No, I just...that's the only name I know for him." Davis said.

"So, Christina?" Kerry asked.

"Uh, no." Davis scowled, " Can you two just go in the house or something, you're getting on my nerves."

They both looked at him, shocked. Elizabeth stalked away, angry for being talked to in such a manner.

"Is he okay?" Kerry asked.

Davis looked at him as he was shooting the ball, then held it between his body and his arm, " Who?" he asked.

"Marco." Kerry asked, looking back at the house, " Did he get hurt?"

"He's good." Davis nodded, " His apartment is totalled, but he's going to North Texas."

"You two must hang out alot." Kerry said.

"No, not even close." Davis said, " Mutual friend."

Kerry nodded, " See ya, son." he said, heading back to the house.

Hannah folded towels as Zack came in. Hannah stopped for just a second, then continued. Zack touched her neck and she moved away from him.

"Stop." Hannah said.

"Honey," Zack sighed, " You've been kind of different lately."

"Yeah, It's called traumatized." Hannah said.

"Yeah and you're sick." Zack said.

"Yeah and I'm about to graduate, get off of my back!" Hannah snapped.

"Alright." Zack said, throwing up his hands and walking backwards, " I'm going out with Jack and Curt." he said, leaving.

"Trouble?" Harry asked, appearing at the door.

"Does duh mean anything to you?" Hannah growled.

"What's wrong?" Harry asked.

"i just am feeling a little trapped." Hannah cried, " And I'm feeling all..."

Harry hugged her, " It's alright." he said, kissing her passionately, " I'm not going anywhere." he said as they fell backwards on the bed.

As Davis stood at the door, he couldn't help but feel the knots in his stomach tighten. There was so many things he wanted....no, needed to say and he wanted to say it now, while it was fresh on his mind. There has always been one person in the world for him, that made him feel that magical twinge of happiness. That made him feel like he was more than just a jock, that he wasn't a moron. Or a potential meal-ticket. The door opened and it was...

"Eric." Davis sighed, disappointed.

Eric looked him up and down, " Hey, Davis. Here to dump my brother again." he asked.

"Nice to see you're living in the now." Davis said, " Speaking of Adaen, is he home?"

"I don't think he wants visitors." Eric said quickly.

"Look, I know you're angry at me for hurting your little brother, but this goes back further than that and we both know it." Davis said, " I get it, we're not best friends, but I am in love with your brother."

"Which is why he got outed and you didn't." Eric said.

"I told him that I would sing it to the whole world, but he tried to keep me in the closet." Davis said, stopping. Was he in the closet? He had fallen for Adaen, but that's really the only guy he could ever see himself with, but then again, he couldn't see himself with anyone else.

Kya waddled over, " Eric, who's at the door?" she asked, seeing Davis, " Oh, you're Davis, right?"

"Only if you and your brother aren't going to kick my ass." Davis said shyly.

Kya laughed, " Come in, he's upstairs." she said.

"Hey!" Eric said as Davis passed, " Kya, he's not.."

"Look, I know you have issues with Adaen's...love life and you and Davis really don't get along, but you have got to get over it. I don't think he's going anywhere. Plus he makes Adaen happy...I hear, so that's a good thing." Kya said, " Do we have any cool whip?"

"John coming into town?" Eric said.

"Low." Kya said, " Yeah, but I wanna make a triple banana split and...nevermind." she said, waddling to the kitchen.

Eric followed Davis up the stairs. Davis knocked and I yelled out for whoever it was to come in. To my surprise, Davis made his way in and shut the door behind him. I turned from my computer and stood in my sweats and looked at him.

"Sorry for not calling but I..." Davis smiled, pausing, " Nice fit."

"I have no ass in these...well, I do, but..." I paused too, " So, you're here?"

"I am." Davis smiled, " I just, haven't seen you since the police station."

"Yeah, I'm not real chatty." I said quickly, " Is that all? You came to tell me you haven't seen me lately?"

"What's your problem? I thought..."

"You were wrong." I said, " You thought you would come here and say you love me and we'd be all lovey-dovey and everything would change, well it doesn't."

Davis groaned, " I'm not putting up with this!" he said, heading for the door.

I chuckled, " It's so easy isn't it? You can just walk away! Hey, look, Adaen's a big FAG, but he's the only one because he's the only one in all of Texas!"

"I wanted to come out, for you." Davis said angrily, " You told me not to."

"Right...and you listened? For the first time, this is the only thing you've ever listened to. Whenever things get rough, you can leave. You can just ditch me and leave with Christina. You can leave me and go back to that slutbag and I'm the stalker. I'm the stalked. I get cut and stabbed and you go back to being the Golden Boy. You have single handedly ruined my life! I hate you." I said quietly.

"Don't...don't say that." Davis said, his eyes watering.

"It's the truth." I said coldly, " Until I met you, I was happy. I had a best friend and I was popular and I was surviving."

"Were you living?" Davis asked, " Are you living now? Are you living..." he shoved the clutter off my desk, " ...up here all by yourself!? Locked away so no one can..." he stopped, realizing what he was saying, " Even if you stay up here, people are always going to get to you."

"Really? I was fine until you got here." I said quickly.

"Was it? You're sitting up here, what? Being afraid? Feeling sorry for yourself?" Davis asked, his intensity clouding the part of his brain that spoke, " Cause what you're doing seems like you're running again, you're just not going anywhere!"

"FINE." I shouted, " Fine. I'm scared but I'm right too. I have watched you be okay while I struggled...and I'm not alright with it. I hate you for changing my life."

Davis nodded, then turned to leave.

"Oh yeah, and good luck with the basketball thing." I said as he slammed the door shut. I sank to the floor, picking up the clutter. I picked up the clutter of pencils and paper and threw them against the wall! Who was he to come and tell me that I'm afraid? I jumped up, not bothering to grab my coat but snatching my keys and leaving my room for the first time.

Julie once again found herself waking up to Christina's room. This time, Christina was asleep next to her. She stared at Christina, wondering how they'd gotten this far in their relationship. Two best friends then two nothing.

"If you're going to stare, bitch, then pay for it." Christina chuckled.

"Ha Ha, funny." Julie smiled, " Look at the time, we're going to miss Mr. Johanssen's funeral."

"Yeah. It's a wild ride...wish you were here." Christina smiled. Suddenly, Julie started to throw up. She brought her head back to show that she was pale and pastey and Christina panicked, " Are you okay?!"

"I think...I..." Julie gasped.

"NO!" Christina shouted, " Someone help me!" she shouted. The next thing she knew, Kendall was shaking her and she sat up, crying.

"Are you okay? Must have been a bad dream." Kendall said, studying her.

"Kendall...I have a confession." Christina sobbed.

"What is it?" Kendall asked.

"I...can't..." Christina gasped.

"Look, lately, we've been on the outs, but we've been friends since before either of us could talk." Kendall smiled, " I love you like a sister...there's nothing you can't tell me."

"I killed Julie." Christina admitted sadly.

Davis pressed himself against the wall as he waited. There was a celebration going on, which seemed odd. His parents and everyone had gathered to watch as he was praised for his sportsmanship and his skill but he felt low. Having the person you loved just tell you that they hate you couldn't be overcome. So, while everyone asked him questions, he let the coach, his mom, and his dad answer the questions, until one question came up.

"Ummm, how's your love life?" a reporter asked.

"Good. He's dating like normal, seeing one of his high school sweethearts, Chr..." his mom beamed.

Davis snapped out of his daze, " I'm gay." he said, shocking everyone, including his parents. There were gasps, then silence, " I'm in love with a guy named Adaen. He's the love of my life and I hurt him and I'm sorry." There, he had said it...wait...he had said it! In front of everyone! He was embarassed and left the stage, not knowing where to go now. Across town, I was watching as a needle with through my eyebrow. I didn't acknowledge the pain, I just watched.

"There we go, all done." The lady who pierced my eye said.

"Huh? Thanks." I said, still in shock.

Davis: Fear. It runs everyone's life. But it's not always a bad thing. Some people will always be scared and play their cards safetly, but to those who don't keep their cards to themselves, fear, or the overcoming of said fear can change the most vulnerable person into the hardest person.

"We are gathered here to bury our dearest Ted Johanssen. His life has been shrouded by recent events, but we are forgiving. God said that no Man is an Island and all the sadness you feel, let it out. We are not only here to send a beloved man off to the other side, but we are mourning this humble man..." The preacher said.

I looked around to see everyone I knew, from Marco's busted lip to Hannah, Christina, and Kendall who shared that same black eye. I wondered if my wounds would ever heal. Not the cuts or the bruises, but the emotional ones. I walked closer and saw that Davis stood somewhere between Marco and Ballard. Christina and Kendall were crying and holding hands, while Hannah just stood, looking a bit sick. I walked over and stood between Marco and Davis. Davis looked at me, then looked back at the ceremony. I grabbed his hand and interlaced my fingers with his and he looked at me oddly.

"I saw what you did." I said.

"Nice eyebrow ring." Davis said coldly.

"I don't hate you." I said, " I hate Harmon. I hate me. But I do not hate you. My life got better, more real when you came into it. And if there's anything I can say..."

"Right now, I just need you to be quiet and be here with me." Davis said, firming his grip on me.

I nodded and leaned my head against his shoulder as we watched the casket get lowered. I felt all my fears slide away, being with Davis make me feel so safe. Very safe.
