This is the first story I've ever written, I wrote it over the summer of last year and my writing skills have grown immensely. Although this is my first story I've wrote, I have published other stories on here and am current;ly working on one. Under the high school section, I have the One or the Other, which is a current project; Hayden's Story; and GAvin's Got Game. Under the college section, I have The After Party. The latter three stories all contain sexual content.

~ ~ IMPORTANT - THIS WAS WRITTEN BY A FRIEND ~ ~

~ BOLDED WORDS ARE SONG LYRICS ~

My heart was hammering against my throat as an eternity and ten years passed in what was probably only 5 seconds. She looked at my out stretched hand and then at my face and then broke out into that fantastic smile. I felt her place her hand on mine as we interlocked fingers.

"I would love to." She said with that thoughtful expression. I led her out onto the dance floor.

THIS IS WHERE THE CHAPTER ENDS, AND NEW ONE OUT BEGINS

TIME HAS COME FOR LETTING GO THE HARDEST PART IS WHEN YOU KNOW...

She put her hands on my shoulders, as I moved mine to rest lightly on her waist. I never have felt so right in my life. With the most amazing girl in my arms, I could die in a plane crash and I wouldn't have any regrets. She was staring at me, that dreamy thoughtful expression still on her face. I smiled at her, "What are you thinking about?"

She shrugged her shoulders and cocked her head to the side. "You." My breath caught in my throat as she moved her hands to rest on the sides of my neck, I tightened my grip on her waist.

This girl is going to be the death of me. I couldn't let her know, not yet. I just smirked at her and laughed lightly. "What about me, gorgeous?" Gorgeous. Wow, I got brave.

She grinned and let out a giggle. "Gorgeous? That's new Gray." she said. I felt her hands move so that her fingers were now connected behind my neck. I moved my hands so that my fingers were laced together behind her waist.

ALL OF THESE YEARS WHEN WE WERE HERE

ARE ENDING BUT I'LL ALWAYS REMEMBER...

"Hey, I'm just being honest." I said as I shrugged my shoulders with a grin. "Now, tell me. What about me you were thinking of? Haha!"

She stared into my face her eyes searching. For what, I didn't know. "How you always found ways to get people to miss you when you were gone." she whispered. She removed one of her hands and used it to trace a path from my temple to my jaw with her thumb before putting it back. I pulled her closer to me. I felt my heart starting to splinter.

"Have I ever told you, that you are the most incredible, amazing, beautiful, perfect girl in the world? And that I l-..." I sighed and looked away. Not yet. "Am going to miss you more than anything in my life?" I said in a pained voice. She looked at me with the most heartbreaking expression.

"Grayson." she whispered. Amy pulled me towards her and buried her face in my shoulder. I put my arms completely around her as we spun slowly in a circle under the flashing lights with all the other people in the universe.

WE HAVE HAD THE TIME OF OUR LIVES, AND NOW THE PAGE IS TURNED

THE STORIES WE WILL WRITE WE HAVE HAD THE TIME OF OUR LIVES...

"You are my best friend and I really don't want you to leave me..." she murmured into my t-shirt. Best friend...

I moved my head so that the side of my face was resting against hers and that my lips were by her ear. "Hey, c'mon. I'm not going anywhere yet." I pulled her even closer and I felt her arms tighten around me. "You have me till the end of the song. You always have." I barely spoke the last part, but I know she heard it.

"Even now you're making me miss you before you're even gone." she said quietly. I felt something wet on my shoulder.

I pulled back so I could look her in the eyes. "Amy..." I whispered. She didn't look up. "Amy, look at me. Please?" I begged. My heart was no longer cracked. It was shattered.

Tears were falling off her face, as she gave me an expression of such vulnerability that it would make me destroy anything that hurt her. Ironic, I'm destroying myself right now. "Please don't go..." she said in this pleading voice I haven't heard since we were kids. When I was going to jump off the apartment roof after my mom, dad, and brother were killed in a car crash. Funny how she said the same exact thing then as she did now.

I used one of my hands to wipe the tears off her face. I used my thumb to trace under her eyelids, along her cheek bone and then down to her jaw. "Hey, shh. It's okay. It's g-gonna be okay." My voice cracked and I could feel the stinging in my eyes. I will not cry in front of her. Not tonight. Not when I'm leaving.

AND I WILL NOT FORGET THE FACES LEFT BEHIND IT'S HARD TO WALK AWAY FROM THE BEST OF DAYS, BUT IF IT HAS TO END, I'M GLAD YOU HAVE BEEN MY FRIEND IN THE TIME OF OUR LIVES...

She sniffed. I leaned my forehead against hers as she spoke. "I know you have to go Grayson. I mean, it's what you always wanted. You have a music and English scholarship in San Francisco. They're even giving you another apartment free of charge." She brought one of her hands to rest on my face as she looked downcast at our feet. "I'm being selfish by asking you not to go."

"Amy, no. You're not. I'm selfish for even being here. I mean, look at you. You're crying on prom night, and I know how you hate being teenage clichés." I said weakly. I love you. I love you so much. Don't be with DJ. Stay with me. Ask me not to go one more time. I wanted to tell her all these things. Tell her over and over, but that's not how things work. I'm going to San Francisco and she's staying here, with her future. With DJ.

WHERE THE WATER MEETS THE LAND, THERE IS SHIFTING IN THE SAND, LIKE THE TIGHT THAT EBBS AND FLOWS, MEMORIES WILL COME AND GO...

Her hand was on my neck again, her thumb moving up and down. She laughed through the tears. "God, you always knew how to make me feel better." she said as she quickly wiped her eyes with the back of her hand.

"And you always knew how to make me feel in general." I said. Her forehead was still pressed to mine. Our lips were only a few inches apart.

I thought of all the times our lips were this close. All the times we were this close. All the chances and all the moments I could have taken. We could have been on a totally different path. She and I could have been dating, she would be coming with me to San Francisco, and maybe I would have been able to have her for longer than a song.

"Can you promise me something?" she asked.

"Anything."

ALL OF THESE YEARS WHEN WE WERE HERE ARE ENDING, BUT I'LL ALWAYS REMEMBER...

"Don't forget me, okay?"

I held onto her tighter than ever. The girl I love, the girl I have to leave, thinks I'll forget her. "Never." We didn't say anything. We didn't have to. I could feel her tears on my shoulder, and I'm sure she could hear the very best part of me ripping away to rest with her. We kept moving in a circle and holding onto each other. I guess both of us know that once we let go everything ends.

"Oh shit." I heard Alex say to Jay from somewhere behind us.

"Should we um, do something?" Jay said.

Alex shushed him. "DJ is currently preoccupied, Gray may never see Amy again. Let them have this moment." He sighed. "You know they probably never will again. Besides, I know a better thing we can do." I heard them start to walk away.

I couldn't focus on anything but Amy. It felt like I was hyper aware of everything that was her. The way the fabric feels over her skin, under my palms. How her breath is tickling my lips. How her chest rises with each breath and her fingers tracing a pattern into my skin.

WE HAVE HAD THE TIME OF OUR LIVES, AND NOW THE PAGE IS TURNED, THE STORIES WE WILL WRITE, WE HAVE HAD THE TIME OF OUR LIVES...

"Gray?"

"Hmm?"

"What are you thinking about in this exact moment?" she asked with a kind of determination in her voice. I looked down at her. Her eye's were locked on mine, searching once again.

I twiddled with a piece of the fabric on her dress. Please don't make me answer this question. I smirked at her. It was so much easier being the cocky, asshole she knows me to be. " Hmm, what makes you think I'm thinking of anything worth mentioning?" I ask, raising an eyebrow.

She gives me a devilish smile. "Because you have on the exact face you make when you're writing or playing guitar." She brushed her forefinger along my eyebrow. "You do this thing with you're eyebrows and then get this dark look in you're eyes. I used to think it was kinda scary, but now it's just so..." she watched me closely as she thought of a word. "You." she finished.

I sighed. "That's what I'm thinking of."

"What are you thinking of yourself?" she asked quizzically.

"No. You. I'm thinking of you." I said.

AND I WILL NOT FORGET THE FACES LEFT BEHIND. IT'S HARD TO WALK AWAY FROM THE BEST OF DAYS, BUT IF IT HAS TO END, I'M GLAD YOU HAVE BEEN MY FRIEND, IN THE TIME OF OUR LIVES...

She was quiet for a moment. "What about me are you thinking of?"

"Everything. How much it's going to kill me when I have to walk away from you tonight, knowing I'm not coming back." I said. I leaned my head into her hair and then reached into my back pocket where I had a letter and a mix tape I hastily made before I came. I grabbed the mix tape and put it into her hand. "I made it for you. All the songs that we listened to together, or that reminded me of you. So you know, whenever you play this, hopefully you'll think of me and remember us."

She looked at the CD in her hand for awhile and then closed her eyes. "God, Grayson. Why do you always have to wait until we're out of time?" she asked as she rested her face in the crook of my neck.

It's going to kill me what I'm going to do next. It's going to rip away what ever I have left. But I have to...

WE SAY GOODBYE, WE HOLD ON TIGHT, TO THESE MEMORIES THAT NEVER DIE WE SAY GOODBYE, WE HOLD ON TIGHT TO THESE MEMORIES THAT NEVER DIE...

I pressed my forehead to hers an tilted my head ever so slightly, "We're not out of time yet." I whisper. I look at Amy. Memorizing every detail of this moment.

She looks at me and inclines her head to the right. "Until the end of the song?" she breathes. Her lips are centimeters from mine.

"Always." My lips touch hers. And it's the most incredible, and the most painful feeling I've ever gotten. I love her in this moment more than I've loved anything or anyone. It was soft, and short. Only as long as the bridge. Feeling her in my arms, and just being in hers. I stared into her eyes again. I had the smallest glimpse of an eternity in hell and heaven. I pulled away from her, the song was ending. I was right, it did rip apart everything that I had left. And pulling away from Amy, was the absolute hardest thing I had ever done in my life.

"If anyone asks, I kissed you and you didn't want to so you slapped me." I said quietly.

WE HAVE HAD THE TIME OF OUR LIVES...

She looked at me helplessly, I felt the burning sensation behind my eyes again. "Grayson..." she looked away. "I love DJ..."

"I know."

AND NOW THE PAGE IS TURNED

I looked away from her. Don't cry. Don't Cry Don't cry. I bit my lip. "I should go Amy."

THE STORIES WE WILL WRITE...

I felt her run up behind me and put a hand on my shoulder. I turned around to face her as she grabbed my hand and put an engraved metal bracelet with the word, 'infinite' on it. I looked up at her in question. I bit my lip harder to hold back the liquid in my eyes.

WE HAVE HAD THE TIME OF OUR LIVES...

She closed her hand over mine, "So you'll think of me." After this, you're the only thing on my mind.

AND I WILL NOT FORGET THE FACES LEFT BEHIND...

I shut my eyes and turn away. "Goodbye Amy." I say in a strained voice.

"No." she says quietly. I can hear her voice quavering ever so slightly behind me. "See you later." I smile to myself.

"Yeah, see you later." I begin to walk towards the door. Every ounce of my being focused on the girl behind me.

IT'S HARD TO WALK AWAY FROM THE BEST OF DAYS

Right before I'm about to open the door and leave this place forever I hear her voice one last time. This time I incline my head so I can look at her through the corner of my eye. "Gray?" she says in the voice I remember hearing so often over the years. I've had her memorized for so long.

"Yeah?" I asked. I'm so sorry I'm doing this to you.

"I love you." She said in a way that I know she means it, but not how I want her to mean it.

"I love you too, Amy." I say quietly. And so I take one last look at her.

BUT IF IT HAS TO END, I'M GLAD YOU HAVE BEEN MY FRIEND...

She's smiling that sad little smile, and looking completely breathtaking and completely heartbreaking. And all I can think is how DJ is the luckiest person on this planet. As I give her one last smile, I felt a tear rolling down my face. "Later."

"Later." she said in that barely there whisper.

IN THE TIME OF OUR LIVES

So I step out the doors, and the tears are falling freely now. I pull out the letter and look at what I wrote.

Amy,

You mean everything to me. I would follow you to the ends of time if you asked. I'm so sorry I have to leave. God, I wish I could stay with you. But more than that, I want you to stay with me. I want you to come live with me in San Francisco. Below is a ticket for the 3 am flight. You are what I want in life, and you are the person that got me this scholarships. You were my inspiration for all of my best writing.

Hopefully I'll see you at the airport. And if you have any doubts...

Amy, I love you. I always will, and I always have. I want to spend the rest of infinity with you...

  • Grayson

I'M GLAD YOU HAVE BEEN MY FRIEND, IN THE TIME OF OUR LIVES...

I looked it over one more time, then tore it up. I watched the pieces of it scatter on the cement in the parking lot as I walked to my car. I took one last look at the gym and then got inside. The only thing I could concentrate on were how fast the tears came and how fast they dried. I stared straight ahead and started the engine. I was on my way to the airport, where I knew that I wouldn't need the extra ticket.

This story is a precursor to the actual Shawn's Turn. It contains information that may come in handy for the next part. Also. there are four chapters written by a friend of mine and I will tell you if they were written by her. Please DO NOT contact me and tell me how different those chapters are from the rest of the story and they are written completely differently. If you do I will most likely insult you. :D
