Chapter Ninety-One: New Horizons

"Did ja see us?" Danny yelled out before he was even close to where Daniel was sitting. Daniel just looked at the boy and smiled as Danny reached his target and climbed onto Daniel's lap.

"Did ja see us?" Danny asked again with wide-eyed enthusiasm that only a young child could muster. "Me n' Ian n' Ryan was swimmin' with those big fishes." Ryan and Ian settled on each side of Daniel and looked, wide-eyed, up to him for his approval. People sitting around Daniel and the boys watched and smiled.

"Do you know what those fish are called?" Daniel asked patiently.

"Uh-uh. They didn't tell us their names. Do you know them?" Ian answered innocently and with a very serious tone of voice. Daniel laughed.

"I didn't mean did you know their names. I meant, do you know what kind of fish they are? In fact, did you know they aren't really fish?" All three boys looked at Daniel, confused.

"Huh?" Ryan injected. "They're fish, 'cause the lady said they live in that big fish tank right over there." Ryan twisted his body without looking around and pointed to the parking lot.

"Okay, I see I'm out-numbered on this one. However, they aren't called fish, they are dolphins."

While Daniel talked to the three young boys, their big brothers, who also swam with the fishes and kept an eye on their young charges, joined them. Daniel looked at the boys and knew they were all a little tired from a busy and exciting day.

"Boys, it's getting a little late. Why don't we go find ourselves an ice cream and a place to sit down and enjoy it, then head back to camp so you can tell everybody what you did this afternoon? With a little luck, the rest of the guys will spot us and we won't have to worry about trying to find them."

"Should we change to our other clothes, Mr. Dan'l?" Jacob asked.

"Only if you want to. You do whatever you feel most comfortable doing."

"Mr. Dan'l, we can't do that, I don't think the park people would like it," Ryan offered, smiling.

Daniel was initially confused by the statement and then realized what Ryan was referring to. Daniel gave the boys his 'don't be a smart-ass' look, causing all the boys to break into laughter.

Daniel and the boys walked out of the theater and spotted a snack stand where they each ordered an ice cream cone. Daniel ordered a single scoop for each of them and the boys smiled as they watched the attendant build up the largest single scoop of ice cream they had ever seen. The only person with a bigger smile was the attendant as he handed each of the younger boys their cone and watched their expressions of amazement and then giggles.

"You guys realize we may have to throw three boys back in the pool by the time they finish eating and wearing all this ice cream, don't you?" Daniel teased the older boys who just nodded. No one really cared if the little guys made a big mess.

"Mr. Dan'l," Ian spoke up, "Ask Sean 'bout the granny that hugged 'im."

Daniel looked at Sean who was now blushing. Ian's tone and devilish grin said that something funny happened to Sean. Daniel continued to look at Sean and the boy knew he would have to tell or one of the other boys would tell for him.

"It wasn't so bad, Mr. Dan'l. It was just this older lady that spotted us and the way she hollered out, you'da thought we were long lost family or somethin'. She came runnin' up ta me and hugged me. Actually, it was more like a bear hug." Sean blushed again and laughed. "I thought she was gonna squeeze me so tight and not let me go till I passed out."

"Tell Mr. Dan'l the rest," Ryan egged his friend on.

"She told me I was cute," Sean responded.

"That's not quite true, Mr.Dan'l. While she was squeezin' 'im she told 'im he was pretty and then when she let 'im go she looked at the way we was dressed and told 'im he was cuu-uute. She kinda had her hands all over 'im too." The boys all laughed. "You should'a seen Sean blush then, Mr. Dan'l."

Sean looked under the table and kicked both of his friends' legs for telling on him.

The boys didn't settle down any during the ride back to camp. Daniel listened, and enjoyed, as the boys exchanged stories and declarations of the fun they had. Daniel did laugh to himself as he thought about the energy these kids could display, then at some point in the evening it would be as though someone flipped a switch and they would all collapse into a deep sleep. Such was one of the benefits of childhood.

As Daniel pulled into the camp, he could hear the boys on the bus rustling, anxious to get out and join the other boys. Daniel saw a number of the boys just sitting around talking, and a large group playing in the swimming hole. When the bus stopped and the door opened, the first blur to pass Daniel was a small brown object moving very fast and making lots of noise. Daniel recognized Danny, sans everything but his birthday suit, headed to the swimming hole.

"Sorry, Mr. Dan'l," Sean offered, standing behind Daniel. "He's a little excited."

"A little? Sean, that's definitely an understatement. Why don't you and the rest of the boys go have some fun too?"

Daniel looked around the grounds as he walked towards his cabin and noticed that there were clothes in piles scattered around. The boys knew better than to treat their clothes like that and Daniel was disappointed.

"Barry, why did the boys leave all these clothes lying around here like this? They know better than this."

"Daniel, look closer. Those aren't our clothes" Barry answered. "Seems the boys have made some friends and we have extras. Look over where the small group is leaning against the log, talking."

Daniel looked closely and realized there were seven boys sitting on the ground in a circle talking. Three of the boys had tan lines which meant they weren't part of the New Horizons group.

"I'm not concerned about them being friends with the boys so long as they stay close, but I'm not too sure I like the idea of them being nude. Their parents may not approve."

"Relax, Daniel," Captain Jackson had joined them. "I spoke to the parents and there's no problem."

"Okay. Let 'em have their fun. Personally, I need something cool to drink and I wouldn't mind just sitting down for a few minutes."

"What's wrong, can't keep up with them any more?" Daniel was surprised to turn around and see his dad talking to him.

"Dad? What are you doing here?"

"What? Just because I'm a little older doesn't mean I've forgotten how much fun a place like this can be. Plus, I thought it might be nice to visit with my son for a little, especially since he doesn't seem to have the time to come see me."

"Ouch!" the Captain responded for Daniel. "Daniel, I'll get that drink for you. I think your dad just gave you a message."

"Dad, your finesse is getting a little rough around the edges; isn't it?"

"What finesse? I just told you the truth and made sure you got the message."

Daniel and his father enjoyed exchanging little personal jabs and made sure everyone around them knew it was all light hearted. The men stood outside for a few minutes, watching the boys, then Daniel suggested they all go inside to talk.

"Dad, something tells me you're not here just for a social visit."

"Actually, I am. It's true, there's a little business we need to discuss, but we could have done it over the phone. This was a good excuse for me to come here and visit with you and see the boys." Dr. Thompson spoke with a twinkle in his eyes. It was the kind of twinkle a father shows when he is both pleased and proud of his son's accomplishments.

"Daniel, I'm not sure how much you are aware of the stir you've created over in Tallahassee. When you first began lobbying for New Horizons, people thought you were a real pain in the ass. The basic perception was that you were just another do-gooder looking for a cause and would disappear when things got tough. You stuck it out and pushed for what you thought was right. You managed to push the right buttons, and here we are." Daniel sat patiently and listened. He knew his dad well enough to know that all this was leading up to something, eventually.

"I don't think I ever told you how proud I was of you the day we all met in the governor's office. There were some men in that meeting that still had not made up their minds. You spoke from the heart with real emotion. You gained a lot of friends that day, particularly with the chief judge. He really admired how you were willing to fight for Mark.

"Anyway, let me get to why I'm here. Since this last law suit, and then the suit in federal court regarding due process, the state is obligated to come up with a plan to restore the enslaved children and develop some type of compensation. As you can imagine, the suggestion, objections and arguments run the full gamut; typical politics. The governor wants to form an advisory committee, and he wants you on it. He feels, personally and privately, understand, that the court was correct. He also believes the Supreme Court will side with the current ruling. However, there are some who want to file a suit, claiming a conflict between the Supreme Court ruling about children being property and the lower court ruling handed down in your recent case. The argument is that property is a thing and a thing can not have rights, rights being defined as due process."

"Dad," Daniel interrupted is father, "what does the governor want the advisory committee to do? What does he want me to do?"

"On its face, the committee is to study the effects of the privatization of foster care. However, its real purpose is to put together sufficient data to support proposed legislation that not only would establish private foster care, but establish that children are not property to be bought, sold, or enslaved, and totally rewrite the slavery statutes. He wants slavery returned to its original purpose, to punish hard core felons. Children and adults would be protected from enslavement because of civil actions. Slavery would be tied to criminal actions only."

Dr. Thompson stopped talking and looked at his son. Daniel stared into space, both enjoying the fact that the ultimate goal may be within reach; and fearing that it could be snatched completely out of reach without warning; such was the nature of politics.

"Daniel, this won't be easy. There are still a lot of people opposed to changing the law. You've made some strong enemies, particularly in business, as well as friends. This could get real ugly, real nasty, fast. However, the governor, Amos Crawford, and others within the cabinet are willing to stand with you and give all the support they can. The governor knows that the best chance for success is to have the bill passed before he has to leave office.

"If you're willing to go for it, I need to make a call. The governor and Amos want to meet with you this weekend. They'll come here under the guise of visiting the boys and checking on the program's progress."

"Make the call," Daniel answered without hesitation. Dr. Thompson laughed.

"The governor already knew what your answer would be, but the question had to be asked. He's already packed a bag and will be here Friday afternoon."

"Colin," Daniel became very serious, "I need your word that what you are about to see remains strictly confidential." Colin nodded his understanding. "Dad, look at this. You say there is some opposition. Do any of those names appear in this paperwork?"

Daniel handed the folder he received from Grandpa Smith to his dad.

"Arthur, you better take a look, too."

Dr. Thompson, Arthur and Colin looked at the paperwork Daniel handed them. Daniel noticed that the more the men read, the straighter their backs became. The paperwork definitely had their attention.

"Daniel." Arthur looked up from the papers, "This is all highly confidential information. Some of it is protected under international treaty. Can you verify this data?"

"The information is genuine and can stand up in court, if that's what you're asking. Look at some of those names and how convoluted the organizational structure is. Someone knew what they were doing and intended that no one would ever be able to discover what you have there. When I first saw that and began to understand all the implication, I didn't know whether to be mad or exactly what emotion I should feel. I do know that I felt sick. Look at the money those groups have made."

"Has anyone else seen this?" Dr. Thompson asked.

"Since I received the data, no. I don't know how many people saw it while the information was being assembled. My guess though is that those who did see it are sworn to secrecy and deal in this king of stuff all the time.

"I'm also guessing that most of those people have no idea what they have invested in. They probably think they invested in some conservative investment group dealing in land or future commodities. They had no idea the commodities were children and the destruction of families."

"Daniel," Dr. Thompson spoke very solemnly, "a lot of families, a lot of lives, could be ruined if this information got into the wrong hands. There are also people out there that would stop at nothing to do you harm if they knew you had this."

"Dad, how many families and lives have they already ruined? It's not my intention to hurt anyone. If that information were to get out, the mess it would create would just act as another roadblock for our goals. The only reason I'm showing you now is so we will all know what kind of organization we could be facing. As far as I'm concerned, if things do get a little dirty, we'll keep it behind the scenes; politics as usual."

"Danny." Kyle wanted his friend's attention. "How'd you get picked ta be in the tank? Can the rest of us do it too?"

"I dunno," Danny answered innocently, and honestly. "This lady just came out where we were and asked us if we wanted ta be in the show. Mr. Dan'l said it was okay and so all of us went with her."

"You mean Sean and Jacob and Isaac got ta go too?"

"Uh-huh," Danny answered while nodding his head. "Me and Ryan and Ian got ta go first, though. The lady was with us and the big fish would just swim up to her so she could pet 'im. We got ta do that, too! And . . .and he felt all funny like. His skin was slippery but kinda bumpy. She said the fish had ta get used to us and then he'd let us ride and she rode with us ta make sure we were okay. When we got ta ride we got ta lay on his back and hold on ta this thing comin' outta his back. It was fun."

The boys sat around the three youngest and listened to them tell all about their adventure swimming with the dolphins. Often, the boys got excited and talked at the same time so no one could really understand everything the boys said. The group did understand that more boys would have the opportunity to have fun when they went to Sea World. A couple of the older boys decided to find Sean, Jacob and Isaac and find out what they did during their visit.

"Hey, Isaac," Joey called out when he spotted the other boys. "Wait up." Joey and Gerry trotted over to join the other boys.

"Danny and Ian and Ryan are telling everybody what a great time they had this afternoon at Sea World. What'd you guys get to do?"

"'Bout the same thing. It's just that since they're so little, they got ta go first. The little ones just got ta go for the ride holding on to the dolphin. When we went, they let us hold onto the dolphin a little then we got ta ski; or, at least try to ski," Isaac answered. "I spent more time fallin' off the skis than I did standin' on 'em." The boys all laughed.

"Did they let you go skinny dippin' or did ya have ta wear somethin'?"

"At first, we went naked, just like the little guys," Jacob answered. "The man there told us we might want to wear something when we tried skiing so's we didn't hurt any of the tackle. It took me a minute to figure out what he was talkin' about. Would you believe they gave us Speedos to wear?" The boys laughed.

"Yeah, and that guy named Robin, he decided he should help Jacob get his on," Sean added, much to Jacob's chagrin. "You shoulda seen him. He had his hands all over Jacob's ass. Before we even got undressed, 'cause we were still wearin' the Cherub outfits from the hospital, that guy was standin' next ta Jacob, ticklin' his butt. Jacob didn't know what a do 'cause he started getting' hard and was blushin'."

"He really do that, Jacob?" Gerry asked, laughing.

"Yeah. He wasn't much older'n you guys. He whispered in my ear that I had a nice ass and he wouldn't mind kissin' it."

"Why didn't you let 'im?"

"I would have, but there wasn't no place to go ta let 'im do it. He was kinda cute and had some nice tits, too."

"Ooooooo," the boys chorused in, "Jacob's gettin' the hots for older guys."

"Nooo, I'm not!" Jacob objected. "It's just that . . .well, you know Mr. Dan'l has us in that cabin with one of the Captain's men and it's hard ta do anything. Everybody knows that me and Isaac like ta play around some, just like a bunch of you other guys. I'm not so sure how the Captain's man would react if he saw the two of us suckin' on each other in the bed."

"Oh, you guys worry too much. If he says anything, just offer 'im a good blow."

"You offer 'im a good blow. If we see your butt flyin' through the air then we'll know why," Isaac retaliated and they all laughed.

"Get a couple of the guys in a tent to swap with you."

"Are you kiddin'? Who's gonna swap?" Isaac answered. "You listen out here at night. You may hear crickets chirping, but what I hear is more like grunting and moaning. Those tents are the only private places we have out here. Back at Fort Ogden it don't matter, we don't have a bunch of family people watchin' us; we'd just have a good old fashion orgy. Not here."

"Wanna bet? Haven't you guys heard about tonight?" The boys just shook their heads, waiting to be enlightened.

"Some of us are gonna sneak off into the woods, just like back home, after the bonfire things over and the little ones are in bed. Man, it's been hard, and that's the problem. I'm so horny I walked around hard most of the time. You wouldn't believe some of the stares I get."

"Can we come too?"

"Don't see why not. If you can't find a partner to fool around with, you can always use your hand."

Daniel knew the boys well enough to know when something was up. During the bonfire and entertainment that evening, the boys all laughed and had fun. Daniel also noticed that the boys kept looking at one another and glanced over at him and the other adults just a little more often than normal. Sheepish grins and strange hand signals said something was definitely going on.

By the time the mascots departed the campsite and the fire was almost out, the little ones were out. Some of the men poured water onto the campfire and scattered the remaining coals to be sure the fire didn't flare up during the night. The older boys carried their charges and put them to bed.

Daniel, Colin, Dr. Thompson and Arthur stayed outside and watched the cabins as the lights went out in each cabin. When all the cabins were dark, the men stepped inside their cabin. Daniel waited a few minutes and then turned out the lights. To anyone observing, the entire campsite was retired for the evening. Daniel pulled up a chair near a window and waited.

"Daniel, what are you doing?" Colin asked.

"Talk low," Daniel answered. "I don't know what's happening, but I guarantee you that some boys will be coming out soon. They're up to something and I want to see what it is."

"Can we talk while we wait, so long as we talk low?" Daniel nodded. "Daniel, I've spoken with my paper and told them I want to stay on here for a little while. My plan is to expand the scope of my stories. Lord knows, the boys' stories should be able to keep a journalist occupied for a long time, but there's more to it, a greater depth that affects all of us. I'm actually thinking of writing a book and calling it something like Jeremy's Story."

"Colin, you know that you're welcome to stay with us as long as you like."

"That's just it, Daniel. I'm thinking of relocating." Daniel turned and looked at Colin, somewhat surprised. "Daniel, you and your group have been extremely generous. To accomplish what I want, I need to go farther than the boys. I need to look into the laws, see some of the training facilities, talk to more families." Daniel studied Colin for a moment before answering.

"Colin, you know what you need much more than I. You have been a huge help to the boys and New Horizons. Anything we can do for you in return, you only have to ask. What about Nigel?"

"He knows. We had a couple of long talks, something we hadn't done in a long time; too long. I'm bringing the housekeeper over to be with us. When I have to be gone, she'll take care of him. I'll take him with me when I can, but I'll always be within a few hours drive. I intend to see to it that we never return to the old life we had. It almost ruined us both." Colin paused a moment, then continued.

"Daniel, there's one more thing. I want to talk to Arthur. I've already spoken with some of the British officials. I want to petition for guardianship of Connor and Peter. They have no family back in England, and maybe I can provide them with a good home here."

Before Daniel could respond, he caught a movement out of the corner of his eye. He moved near the window, joined by the other three men. They saw two boys creeping across the yard. It was too dark to see who they were. Right behind them were other boys. All of the boys seemed to be moving towards the same area. Momentarily, a couple of more boys were creeping across the yard. Daniel noticed it was the older boys, none of the younger boys. Daniel motioned for the men to remain quiet. When Daniel thought there weren't any more boys trying to sneak away, the four men went looking for the boys.

First they heard muffled sounds and decided to sneak up in the direction the sounds came from. When they were almost at the edge of the small clearing the boys had found, the men stopped. Daniel had to bite his lip and shake his head. Arthur squatted down and hung his head, fighting to suppress laughter. Colin had an expression of almost shock at the scene before them.

There was no doubt that TJ was holding another boy's legs up and the way his hips were thrusting, TJ was giving someone a good pounding. Daniel knew the boy lying on the ground was most likely Evan, but it was the third boy that surprised him. Joey was straddling Evan, if that was Evan, with his butt practically sitting on Evan's face while he and TJ were in a lip lock. TJ had one arm wrapped around Joey's shoulder while he used the other hand to masturbate the boy.

Only a few feet away, lying on the ground, were Jacob and Isaac. Isaac was on his back and there was no doubt that Jacob had his boy member deep into Isaac's mouth. Jacob was on his knees, but rather than being bent over, he had Isaac's legs hooked under his arms, holding Isaac up. Jacob's head was bobbing up and down Isaac's boyhood almost as fast as his middle finger was moving in and out of Isaac's butt. Isaac was writhing and trying to hump Jacob's face.

Daniel felt Colin hold his arm tightly and looked where the man pointed. Sean was on his knees with his arms propped on what looked to be a fallen tree trunk. On his knees, behind Sean, was Nigel. Nigel was licking the full length of Sean's crack. Sean held his head up and was taking sharp breaths through clenched teeth. Soon Nigel rose up, but remained on his knees. The boy picked up what looked like a tube and squeezed something onto his very erect boy pole and then his finger tips. Nigel spread something in Sean's crack; it was obvious that he was about to mount the boy. Daniel was very glad that neither Brad nor Patrick was along on this trip!

Daniel looked around and spotted other boys engaged in boy-play. He signaled the other men to follow him as they backed quietly away from the orgy scene. When they were away from the boys and could no longer hear them, the men burst into laughter.

"Daniel, are you going to do something?"

"You mean to stop them or punish them? For what, being boys? The way they acted earlier I knew something was up and they have been good. No, they're just boys being boys. Tell you the truth, I'm almost a little jealous that life can't be as simple and easy as it is for children." The men looked at one another and they all laughed softly so the boys didn't hear them.

"Tell you what, I have a suggestion," Daniel offered, "let's give them about forty-five minutes and if they haven't returned by then we'll stand out here and announce loud enough for them to hear that we're going to do a cabin check and then retire for the evening. Ever hear a herd of wild boys trying to run quietly when they think they're getting away with something?" Daniel grinned.

"Daniel, you do have an evil streak."
