Unexpected Robert 30

Last Chapter

This is the last chapter of Robert and possibly the family. I do not want to take the guys and their families through university. I have written a story of three generations of a family and a lot of time has passed and characters are aging. I have had ideas for more adventures for Robert and Lucas but I am not sure that I can or want to go that route. I guess only time and rest will tell. As I have said several times, I started writing this story of the family (or as one reader has called it, the Clan) in the winter of 2014. It is hard to believe that four years have come and gone. If by chance in the future, you ever see the title Unexpected in the Nifty archives, give it a look and see if the family has returned.

To the many people who have written, thank you for the kind words and support. That has helped to keep me going. I am not certain if I shall be writing anything else. It has been an interesting journey from my first publication of Unexpected Change in April, 2011. There are themes that run through the stories and perhaps I have said enough. So enough said for now, enjoy the last chapter.

If you like this story or any that you have read on Nifty, a reminder from Nifty that it needs your donations to keep these stories being published. All donations will help.

Jeremy. "Son, this is just the start for you. Believe me; you will have many more times like this in both your lives. We are so happy to have you here and to do this for both of you. Now it has been a great day but we are tired. I think time for bed. Anything that you want to do tomorrow?"

Robert and Lucas looked at each other. "We have been on the Boulevard Haussmann and we would like to go back and do some looking and shopping for things to take back home. Lucas and I could use some fashionable French clothes."

Timothy looked at them. "Excellent idea. Can I make a crazy suggestion? The Opera Garnier is close to the major department stores. The tour is really interesting and it is one of the old historic buildings in Paris. If we don't make it, that's OK. Just a possible suggestion."

Robert looked at his dads. "We saw the outside if the Opera but didn't have the time to go in. Great idea. Thanks for a really great day. Breakfast at our bistro tomorrow?"

There was a definite yes from everyone.

Robert and Lucas undressed each other slowly, stopping only to kiss. Hands roamed each others bodies. It was Lucas who muttered. "How can we be so lucky? How can I be so lucky. They treat me like a son and then I have you."

Not a lot more was said but a lot more was done. Robert made love to his guy again in Paris. He would remember each time they did that.

Present

They were out the door the next morning and received an even more cordial welcome from the owner of the Bistro. The owner had finally asked them if they were in fact tourists as they had just turned up and were coming back daily.

They explained who they were. That led to an interesting conversation as the owner had visited Quebec. He remembered his trip as a wonderful visit to Montreal, the second largest French speaking city in the world and to Quebec City, founded in 1608, which had been a surprise with all its historic architecture and its modern suburbs.

They ate and drank too much coffee but luckily they had started out early and so they were walking up to Au Printemps on the Blvd Haussmann just after its opening time. They went to the main floor menswear department. The dads bought almost anything that they looked at. Well it just seemed like that and the guys told them to wait until they saw what was available at the Galleries Lafayette and other stores. They spent the morning looking in various boutiques and went over to the new shopping gallery at the Saint-Lazare metro station, They had so many parcels that they decided to go back to the apartment. The Opera Garnier might have to wait for another visit.

They arrived back and deposited every thing in the apartment. They were hungry. Robert and Lucas had quietly discussed a late lunch on the Metro.

"Dad, we found a really good restaurant close by in the 5th. There is no discussion; we want to take you there as our treat for lunch. Then we can show you some of the things that we have seen or go back and rest before going for our dinner with Charles and Emile and their friends, Claude and Thomas." He looked at his dads with a look of determination. "The only credit cards that will be produced with be mine and Lucas'. Can you manage that?"

Timothy turned and looked at Jeremy. "Whose steely look is that? Yours or mine?"

Before either could answer, Robert jumped in. "It is both of yours combined."

They left laughing. The Maitre d' recognized them. They introduced his dads in the now, usual way as their fathers, Jeremy and Timothy. The Maitre d' did not speak English to them this time and gave them a good table outside but not close to the street. It was a charming place and it was one of those lovely small restaurants with an interesting menu even at lunch. They noticed that there were a fair number of well dressed male and female patrons who were there as well. They were glad that they had dressed up a bit. They discussed the menu and as it turned out all the meals would go well with a red. Everyone praised their choice and the wine that Robert and Lucas had chosen.

At the end of the meal, it was Jeremy who spoke up. With the remnants of his wine, he toasted his two sons. "We can see that you have grown in poise and understanding. We have said to each other that we are so proud of you. To our sons."

Lucas told himself not to tear up. Robert looked with love at his dads. He had spoken to their server quietly to bring him the bill. As was the case in many good Paris restaurants, the gratuity was already on the bill but Robert added extra. He asked to see the Maitre d'. When he arrived, Robert asked him if knew of a very good wine store in the area that they could trust for good quality wines. He smiled and said that it would be his pleasure. He gave them a name and an address with directions.

By this time, the guys knew their way around a lot of the 5th and they were soon in a wine shop that did not look large on the outside but it was very deep and had an amazing quantity of bottles of wine. The proprietor arrived and looked at each of them in turn. Robert suspected that he was trying to figure out what language to use so Robert decided to start with his best French. "We have a dinner invitation with some friends tonight who know their wines well. We would like to take two good bottles to their home where we are dining this evening. We would like reds. Suggestions? Oh, my partner and I shall be paying for one and my fathers will be paying for the other."

Timothy was just holding back a smile. "Robert, we didn't discus this. We feel that we should pay for both."

"Papa, you can buy as many as you wish but Lucas and I will be taking a bottle ourselves."

Jeremy and Timothy broke out laughing. Timothy looked at the owner. "Our son and his partner have grown up too fast. Two bottles if you please. My partner and I shall pay for one of them." Graceful in defeat.

Lucas spoke up. "I noticed when we were at supper with Claude that he ordered a bottle with Bordeaux on it. I am not certain of the name of the chateau. I did notice Grand Cru on the label."

Robert looked at the owner. "I think that the other was from Provence but it was very good."

The owner looked at them. "Do you want a big name or something special that is a very good wine but a sleeper?"

Almost together Timothy and Robert. "A very good wine, a sleeper!"

It was so spontaneous that it broke everyone up. The owner disappeared and came back with two wines, each with dust on it. He wiped the bottles clean and there was a bottle from Bordeaux and another from the Cote de Roussillon Village not Provence but in the south of France in Roussillon. "Both these wines have been in my cellar for a number of years and they should be ready and at their peak. I have enjoyed this time with you and I can give you a good price. It won't be inexpensive but I think that your hosts will enjoy them as fine wines."

They were wrapped and it was Lucas who pulled out his credit card as it was Robert who had paid for lunch. They would settle the difference later.

"Gentlemen, it has been an interesting and a pleasure. I noticed that two of you have a slight accent which I suspect is from a French speaking country and the other two have an accent that I am not sure of but French was not your first language even if you are fluent in French." He had looked at Timothy and Robert first and then at Jeremy and Lucas."

It was Robert who answered. "There is really only one country that really gives you the answer to your question." He raised his eyebrows.

"North America, Canada. Right?" They all shook their heads yes and bid him goodbye.

Jeremy took down the address of the wine shop. He had decided that if the wine was as good as the owner had said, he might just drop in on the way to the airport the next day and buy a couple of bottles to take home.

They were back at the apartment. Jeremy looked at his two young men; that was the way he saw them now. "Thanks for lunch and that was fun at the wine store. You have shown us something. You both have really grown in the last year and I think that the trip has done you a world of good. I was so proud of you at the restaurant and the wine store." He walked over and gave them a hug. "Now it is time to rest and then to dress and go for dinner with your professors and their friends. We are looking forward to it. Thanks to you, this will be a Paris that we have never seen before."

Lucas was surprised. They actually rested holding each other tightly. For Lucas, it had been two wonderful days with his guy and his parents. For Robert, it had been magical with all that had happened. It was so totally different from his trip last year. His Dad was right. He and Lucas had grown and changed and for him, so much was because of the man beside him. They had shared so many things as partners, problems to be solved, situations to be faced and then taking on the hockey team as co-captains.

They both fell asleep but Robert had set a timer on his iPad which would give them lots of time to get ready and call a cab. His dads had insisted that tonight it was taxis to and back at his and Timothy's expense. Robert smiled to himself when his Dad had said it in that voice, that one that Robert had used at the wine store.

They had looked at internet maps as he knew Claude and Thomas' address. Robert had saved the maps as photos on his phone. They could direct the taxi driver if he were not certain where the address was or had language problems. It turned out that they didn't need them.

Their welcome was warm. Robert introduced his dads. Timothy happened to be the closest so he was introduced as his father, Timothy Malenfant, the senior partner at his law firm. Then it was Jeremy Marchese-Milner, CEO of The Accountants. That stopped the conversations.

Claude, the professor at the Sorbonne, spoke up looking at Jeremy. "You gave an address at the Sorbonne a few years ago. Your topic was fascinating and all my colleagues were impressed that you gave your speech and answered questions in French. It is not often that that happens from visiting lecturers here. What a pleasant surprise. Welcome to our home."

Thomas with a wink, "We also want to welcome two very impressive young men to our home. Robert and Lucas, it was such a pleasure to meet you on Saturday and now to have you in our home." He turned to the dads. "These two young men turned some heads on Saturday night at the restaurant and certainly at the club."

Robert moved and gave Claude his wrapped package. It was taken and opened. "Claude's eyes opened wide. "This bottle is eight years old. I know the area but not this wine. A treat."

Timothy gave his bottle to Thomas. On opening it, "My lord, a Grand Cru Bordeaux and it is ten years old. Gentlemen you are almost profligate. Our food will never reach these heights."

Robert shrugged. "We realized on Saturday night that you knew your wines and you enjoyed them. We wanted you to have something to savour and enjoy. They don't have to be opened tonight. They are for your enjoyment."

"Young man, thank you. You are right. They are for our enjoyment and we choose to share them with our guests."

Robert was smart and he knew when to stop talking. The host had spoken. His dads were impressed yet again with their son's words.

There was conversation all around the room. Jeremy was talking to Claude about The Accountants and his well known forensic division. Timothy had Emile laughing at some of his experiences and antics in court and as the senior partner of his law firm. Robert had started a conversation with Thomas about computer technology and some how they started to talk about Robert's favourite computer language that he had learned last year and when he took over his professor's classes. Robert happened to mention his Marchese web site and the new Accountants web site. When it was loaded onto his laptop, Thomas could not speak highly enough about The Accountants site. Jeremy had watched some of it and he had mentioned it to Claude. Soon everyone was looking at the site. Charles and Emile simply sat back and watched how this young man handled himself. They were more impressed than ever. Then they heard Lucas talking about forensic accounting and they realized that he was as good as his partner.

Over a delicious dinner and superb wines, friendships were made and strengthened. By the end of a very late evening, it was obvious that there was a very good chance that Claude and Thomas would be spending some time in Canada visiting their friends and this very bright, interesting family.

They saw the dads off the next morning as their flight to Basel was at 13 hours. It was a very emotional send off. The guys had enjoyed their time with his fathers as equals and a new relationship was forming between them. The guys felt the loss of his parents within minutes of their departure. They went back to the wine store and each bought a bottle of very good wine to take home with them. They had tasted the best and it would become a passion for them. They discovered that his parents had stopped by as well on the way to the airport.

They took the metro to Monmartre. They visited Sacre-Coeur. They had refused to take the lift and walked the entire way up the interminable number of steps. Then after touring Sacre Coeur, they meandered around the Place du Tertre with its cafes and artists. A little off to the side, they discovered the Dali museum which was fascinating as both had heard the name but had never really seen his work. As Lucas had commented, Dali was quite a contrast to the Impressionists. Then they just wandered and finally took the Metro and went back at the apartment.

They decided to rest before going out for supper. As Lucas was to say later, some rest. They went back to the restaurant that they had taken the dads to. They were recognized and welcomed by the owner and the Maitre d' who again gave them one of the best seats in the restaurant. He even took a few moments to recommend what he felt were their best choices that evening. After a fantastic meal, the guys left a very good tip and a very vocal thank you to their waiter, the Maitre d' and the owner. The guys wondered if the Maitre d' was like them in his orientation. He had been very attentive.

They decided the next day to have a leisurely day. They had read of the Bois de Boulogne and had done some research on it during the summer. It sounded as if it was exactly what they wanted for their last day in Paris. Robert didn't remember the details but he had remembered his Papa talking about their magical time visiting the Boston Common on Jeremy's first presentation at an international conference with Michael Burtchell.

They knew that there were lakes and gardens in the Bois. They looked at maps and took the Metro to what they thought was the appropriate entry. They were soon walking by the lakes through woodland paths. They were enchanted by the concept of this huge park almost in the centre of Paris. They stopped several time to just sit closely together and enjoy the ambience.

The took the short boat ride over to the Chalet des iles where they walked around the island and arrived back at the Chalet des isles for lunch. They had saved a lot of their gift money by eating in the apartment and they decided that they didn't care what it cost. They would have a good lunch that would tide them over until dinner with Andre. It was a time that they would remember sitting eating a very good meal reminiscing about the wonderful time they had had. His Dad was right. They had enjoyed the planning and the time in Paris had sped by as he had suggested. By sitting in the wonderful setting and talking about their time in Paris, they hoped that the memories would stay with them for a long time.

They had read about the Fondation Louis Vuitton situated in the Bois. They were overwhelmed by the architecture of the building and the art displays in it. They spent so much time that they did not have a chance to tour the rose garden at Chateau de Bagatelle built for Marie Antoinette. They decided instead to go back and sit by the lake and relax.

They found a fairly private spot by the lake and sat on the grass. Lucas sighed. "Another wonderful day together in Paris. This was the perfect way to finish our time here." He put his arm over Robert's shoulder. He didn't care who saw what.

Robert sighed and snuggled in to Lucas. "That feels so good. Can you believe what we have done since that day that we met each other. You were talking a mile a minute and then accused me of being bossy. Now I am sitting beside my partner in Paris." Robert looked both ways and gave Lucas a quick kiss." He paused. "A word about tonight. Andre can be quite upfront about what he wants. He wanted ME, gay or straight, back in August last year. He tried but he was then graceful with my decision. He may see things differently now. We haven't talked about situations like this. He may want us to join him and his partner in some intimate activities." Lucas laughed at Robert's diplomatic language.

"Robbie, I hope that you have the same reaction I would have. I don't want to mess around with anybody but you."

"Thank you. I figured that would be your answer. I didn't want any hesitations from us that might lead them on. It has been a busy day. We still have some packing and we have to catch a taxi at 6:30 tomorrow morning. None of that is totally untrue. We may have to be definite. Perhaps, I am over thinking this but I don't want a nasty surprise that spoils the evening."

Lucas leaned over and gave Robert a kiss. It lasted just a bit longer than the last one. "Let's go back and change. We have the bottle of wine and the food that we want to take with us. I know that you checked the Metro lines for where they live. So we want to arrive around 17:30 hours."

They had a warm welcome from Andre and Lucien. Hugs all around. "Guys, this wine looks very good."

"Yes, we found a good wine shop in our area and have bought a few from the owner. So far everything that we have bought has been excellent."

It was a small apartment but well furnished. Lucien served the hors d'oeuvres that Robert and Lucas had brought. Andre looked at Robert and then Lucas. "So have enjoyed you time here?"

The guys outlined all that they had done. Andre laughed saying that it was a remarkable amount. They talked about their year at university and Andre and Lucien talked about their work and that they had done.

Robert was curious about Andre and Lucien. "When and how did you meet." It turned out to be an interesting story.

Finally, the question came that Robert was expecting. Andre looked at Robert, "You mentioned a girlfriend last year at the dance club." He raised his eyebrows.

"Ah, a little lie. I had broken up with her in June and well, I wasn't gay so I bent the truth just a bit."

"How did this rather impressive man come into your life."

"You said that evening that every straight guy had some gay in him. Turned out that I had a lot more than I realized at the time. Also, you and I clicked on several levels and I realized that you could find a soul mate in many ways." With lots of fun and laughter Robert and Lucas explained how they met and how it had all changed at the family chalet.

Lucien stood up to go to the kitchen. "It looks as if the food is ready."

It was lovely meal and the desserts that they had brought were very much appreciated.

They chatted for quite awhile about their courses and Andre and Lucien's work. Robert had looked at his watch and realized that it was getting on to 22:30 hours.

Andre must have caught the glance at the watch. "Hope that you are not leaving. I was going to suggest something a bit more intimate. I told you last year that I could show you a good time. I suspect that you and your partner could certainly give us a good time."

Robert's eyes shifted quickly to Lucas. Lucas got the message.

"Andre, we have had busy day and we still have some packing and getting the apartment ready for the owner. We have a taxi coming at 6:30 tomorrow morning to get us out to Charles de Gaulle for check in for our flight home. I don't want to disappoint and I know that you could give us an interesting experience but we really do have to go." Robert wanted to yell out. "Well done, lover." Instead, he just nodded in confirmation to what Lucas had said.

Lucien got the message and he looked a bit relieved after Lucas' comments. Andre did not look quite as pleased. Robert was so glad that they had had their strategy session in the Bois de Boulogne

In fact, they were packed and the apartment was spotless. When they arrived home, they were quickly in each others arms. Kisses began and became more and more intense. They were finally naked and lying on their sides facing each other.

Lucas looked at Robert. "Robbie, I was a mess that first day we met. I was so worried about what my roommate would be like, my orientations, the hockey try outs and the toxic relationship with my mother. I realized over that month that you were not bossy; you were so caring and helpful. I would go to sleep at night wishing that you were like me. I finally decided that you would just be a best friend. I don't even know how I had the courage to kiss you as I did that night. I was so afraid after I did it that you would back off or throw me aside."

Robert put his fingers over Lucas' lips. "I can't explain the tears that I had when I broke it of with Anna. Papa held me tightly and said the right things. I came to the try outs with an ended relationship and a lot questions about the year, my courses, the hockey team and my roommate. Early on, I realized that I really enjoyed being with you. Even then, we worked like a team. I saw you start to blossom especially after you told me your orientation. At some point, I realized that we did everything together and we had become best friends. Then I saw you literally come alive at the chalet. Papa warned me that you had fallen for me. I think that I just said that I knew. You have told me that you were lucky last Fall. I know that I was the luckiest person in the whole university."

They kissed again stroking each others bodies. They looked at each other and knew that they were going to make love in Paris for the final time. Well for that year.

Epilogue

Robert did not made much progress that first summer on a computer program to assist forensic accounting. In the next year, he did very well in two courses on forensic accounting and gained a lot of knowledge of the mind set of forensic accounting. He did very well in his courses of computer languages and systems. By the end of his third year, he and Lucas had a program working that Lucas had used on several cases. It had helped. But it was in his last year, when things seemed to come together. By graduation, he had a program working that Lucas was convinced was better than anything on the market. It needed a better interface and some more sophisticated compilers but they both thought that it could be ready for market in fairly short order.

Lucas had become one of the bright stars in the university Accounting Department's forensic program. He worked every summer and became not just a summer hire but a member of the forensic staff at The Accountants for those four months. He had even been called back in his fourth year to help crack one of their most difficult, big cases.

Charles watched Robert become one of the brightest and best in their department. When Professor Robertson decided to retire in the Spring of Robert's third year, Robert was given the course to teach in the Fall and the course was so successful that he taught it in his last term before graduation. It was a hectic year but he managed it successfully. Charles and Emile had bonded with the guys and they were frequent guests at their home.

Robert and Lucas had been correct about what might happened when they went to the Computer Technology Department BBQ at the end of their first year as partners. When they returned in that second September at University, in the third week back, they were approached by the student newspaper to talk about the rumour of their partnership. The guys gave a very forthright interview explaining what they had done in their first year and why they had stayed in the shadows. Some members of the LGBT group were upset with them but they explained their point of view, joined and participated in a many events. They had to tell the executive of the group that they were just too busy to do much more. There were a few nasty, homophobic slurs yelled at them from the stands in the first game at home but they ignored them. The second time it happened, there were boos and hisses from the spectators at the guys doing it. Being big strong guys, they were not going to be challenged and with crowd support, the comments stopped.

Coach was correct. The guys were on the team until they graduated and were the co-captains for the entire time. Hank graduated two years ahead of them and was given a great party by the guys and the team. They stayed in contact with him and he spent many weekends at the chalet. He had became a very good water skier and a very close friend.

Paul and Brett separated in late Fall of their third year. Robert and Lucas noticed some friction between them during the Fall term. They asked Paul about it and he just shrugged and said that he wasn't sure what was happening. He happened to add that they were not active physically very often. By late Fall, they never saw Paul and Brett together. Brett had become very involved with his studies spending long days and nights doing research and study time with others in the math department. He met someone who was in his department and apparently was as bright as Brett was. Brett moved out over Christmas from their house that they had then rented for a year and a half.

For the rest of that year, there were a number of guys who stayed the night with Paul but then disappeared. He was having a hard time forgetting his first real love, Brett. Towards the end of term that year, he met a guy at the club and they hooked up. The guy virtually lived at their place for the remainder of the term. They all liked him. However, he disappeared over the summer. Paul had a long talk with Jeremy at the chalet that summer after their third year. The talk seemed to galvanize Paul. He met Sean at a party during the summer. Even though Sean was in the closet, Paul fell for him. Sean eventually came out to his family with a lot of support from Paul and the guys. Their relationship lasted and grew.

Pops had a second heart attack in the winter of their final year. They thought that he was recuperating well but one morning when Momma went up to get him down for breakfast, he had passed quietly away during the night. The guys saw all their professors and the heads of their departments and were able to be there for the entire time as they celebrated his life. Momma was the rock. She spoke so lovingly of their many years together and the guys saw that other side to her life. Robert and Lucas felt incredibly honoured to be amongst the pall bearers at the service and then at the crematorium.

They visited Paris every year and had managed to keep their friendships with Antoine, Claude and Thomas and Andre and Lucien. Antoine visited Canada and they had a great time showing him around. Claude and Thomas came to visit their friends Charles and Emile. They spent time with Robet's parents and the guys. Robert and Lucas spent a lot time with them over the years both in Canada and in Paris.

Anna and Michael became engaged during the Christmas of their final year at university with a wedding planned for late August. They had become almost Robert and Lucas' best friends and many weekends were spent together both at each others universities, at the Chalet and at Michael's family's cottage. Robert was asked to be best man which delighted him. Lucas was one of the ushers. It was the highlight of their summer.

Against most odds for guys who had met when they were so young, Robert and Lucas grew stronger together. There were times when they each had to say stop to the other who was becoming too involved in their work and projects. They were touched by Anna and Michael's wedding. On the night after the wedding, the guys were at the chalet by themselves. They relived the entire day. They were so happy for their friends. As the sun was setting on a beautiful August evening with just the two of them holding hands and looking down at the calm lake reflecting some of the brilliant colours of the pink, red, grey sky, they looked at each other. Lucas looked at his guy and asked why he enjoyed the wedding so much.

Robert simply said that he loved both of them and he was delighted in their joy. Robert had added that it was a way for two people to tell the world how they felt about each other. He was proud to have been part of it. He added that he really felt that the marriage ceremony was a time when two people told each other and their families and friends about their commitment to each other.

Lucas gave Robert a look after his explanation. Then Lucas asked very quietly whether they would ever be ready for that commitment to be made publicly to friends and family.

Robert looked back at him trying to figure out how he wanted to say what he was feeling so intensely. Finally, he gave Lucas a loving look and simply told him that he had been ready for a long time. Lucas moved closer and very softly said that he was ready, any time, any place. There were of course damp eyes as they sealed the deal with a very passionate kiss.

They were married in early November. Where else would the honeymoon be? In Paris, in their apartment that they had rented so many times. They celebrated appropriately their wedding night but somehow they both felt more intense and close as they made love in Paris for the first time as a married couple.
