I woke up. A simple declarative statement, except I don't remember lying down ,nor having a "vent" shoved down my throat. In fact I didn't remember much of anything.

It was obvious I was in a hospital, but I had no idea why. I must have made some noise moving around, because the nurse who was there reading my chart turned around suddenly.

"Ok, just relax. I'll have your doctor here in a minute."

She left the room and returned with an older gent who must have been my doctor. Typical white coat over a slight belly with graying at the temples of a full head of hair. He took my pulse and listened to my chest.

"Ok Dennis, I'm going to take the vent out. On the count of three I want you to exhale. One...two ... three."

He pulled I pushed and the tube was out and I started to cough. The nurse gave me a cup of water with a straw. When I had stopped coughing the doc repeated his exam.

"Looks like you're back to stay for a while. What can you remember?"

"Not a damn thing before I woke up. I didn't even know my name was Dennis until you called me that."

"Well, that may be only temporary,we'll have to wait and see. You've been unconscious for a little over 6 months. I hate to have to tell you all of this but we can't move forward until it is said. There was an accident, your parents were killed instantly. Your Lawyer,Mr Jacobs, will have to fill you in from there. For the time being you'll be staying here until you can get up and about on your own. That's going to require physical therapy. How much and how long is strictly up to you."

The news that my parents were dead should have made me sad,but I couldn't even remember them. Now it seemed I was at the mercy of the doctors and my lawyer.

"I'll leave you alone to rest now. I have some phone calls I have to make concerning you."

The doctor left the room and the nurse did the things that nurses do before she left as well.

So, here I was with no idea of who I was,no idea of who my friends might be, or where exactly my life stood. So, I turned on the TV and found a news broadcast. It was early December and a Friday, beyond that I stopped paying attention.

The usual hospital routine went on for the rest of the day and eventually I fell back to sleep.

The next time I woke up there was a distinguished looking gentleman comming into the room,about6 foot and only slightly out of shape. This was obviously Mr Jacobs. The long and short of his visit being that between what my parents had accumulated, the insurance policies and the civil suit, which I had apparently won, I was set for life with several million dollars to my credit. My parents house had long since been paid off,the hospital and any future needs associated with the accident were covered by the law suit.

So, all I had to do was recover. The therapist came into my room later in the day, a male therapist. This guy was obviously in better shape than the lawyer and deeply tanned even this close to Christmas. He started to massage my legs from bottom to top to help restore my circulation,he said. Well the blood started circulating alright,to parts of my body that were not being massaged if you get my drift. I must have turned several shades of red as he smiled. "Don't worry about that happens to almost everyone the first time."

He kept alternating legs for about a half hour. "I'll be back tomorrow and we'll go to it agan maybe even flexing your legs."

A while later aguy came rushing into the room and came straight over to me and without a word took me in the tighest hug ever.

"I thouhgt I had lost you forever. I got here as fast as I could."

I gave this guy a good looking over. 5'10 blond hair, blue eyed an if the feel of his body was anything to go by in good shape.

"Well that's great, but who the hell are you?"

The look on his face was grief stricken and he stood there slack jawed.

"They didn't tell you I have complete amnesia did they?"

"They may have but all I heard was that you were awake."

"ok then who are you ,please?"

The look on his face didn't change much as the tears started to roll down his cheeks. "I'm Karl we.......we were lovers."

I knew I should have felt something for the guy but there was nothing there, and then the thought struck me. "So you're telling me I'm gay?"

"yes." It seemed all he could say at the moment.

I motioned him to come closer and when he did I reached up and hugged him. "The doctor told me yesterday it may not be permanent. Don't give up on me just yet."

A small smile would crease the corners of his mouth. "I haven't yet."

"So what do you know of what happened?"

"It was the night of graduation. The ceremonies were over and you and your parents were headed out to dinner. A drunk ran a stop sign and broadsided you guys. Your dad died instantly, your mother only seconds later as her side of the car got pushed into a streetlamp."

And still there was no spark of feeling as I couldn't remember them.

"So you went off to college I guess?"

"Only after spending my summer right here in this chair."

I took his hand in mine. "We must have really had something."

"We did. WE were going to get married as soon as you turned 18,which will be in a few weeks. We were going to have a Christmas eve wedding."

"I hope you understand, but I don't think we ought to follow through with that,at least not this year. I need to see where my life is going."

"I understand. We can at least be together for Christmas."

"Do I have any aunts or uncles or cousins or anything that might complicate my life?"

"As far as I know you are the only child of an only child as far as your fathers family. I do know that all of your grandparents are already gone. Your mothers family I'm not so sure about."

At that point the doctor walked in again.

"Well Karl I see you got my message."

"Yes thank you sir."

"Well I need to ask you to leave for a little bit so I can examine my patient."

"Ok doc. I'll be back later Den."

"Looking forward to it Karl."

The doc would then do all of the things a doctor does, including doing an examination of my back. Things seemed to be in fine shape now that I was awake.

"Other than the amnesia,I can find no reason for you to be staying here much longer than it takes to get you on your feet."

"And just how long does that usually take?"

"Depends on the determination of the patient, but no less than a couple of weeks."

"Something tells me I've always been an overachiever doc. How can I accelerate the recovery?"

"By not pushing yourself too hard. That's the surest way to set yourself up for failure. I'll tell Dana, your therapist,to push you as hard as he thinks you will take."

"Guess I'll just have to listen to the doc on this one then."

The doc would leave and I would wait until he was gone before I would start to isometrically flex my leg muscles. There was a grab bar over my head and I would use that to get my arms limbered up again.

Karl came back into my room and seemed to be in better control of himself.

"I let your friends know that you are awake. I expect that you'll be seeing a bunch of them when they come home for Christmas."

"Karl, other than us,what were my plans?"

"You were going to head into business with your dad. Guess you own that business now. I'm betting that Stan Bellows will be in to see you sometime soon. He was your dads general manager. He's been running the place since the accident."

"What type of business?"

"Damn you really don't remember anything at all do you? Your dad was a financial advisor. He was going to teach you the ropes himself."

"So the stock market and bonds and that kind of stuff?"

"Yeah basically. Guess you really don't have to worry about that anymore."

"I'm not going to sit around and twiddle my thumbs just because I can. I think that would probably drive me round the bend."

"Yeah it would. Maybe you are starting to remember."

"Maybe. They said I own a house. Is it manageable?"

"Yeah its a four bedroom 2 1/2 bath, decent size front yard and backyard with a small pool. No servants though."

"I imagine it has been shut up for the last 6 months. So, I need to get somebody in there and get it cleaned up before I get out of here."

"That's already being taken care of Dennis." It was Mr Jacobs my lawyer.

"I've also had your car serviced and checked over, utilities turned back on,phone cable and internet as well. The house will be ready for you in 3 days. As per the conditions of your parents will my firm has been acting as your guardian and business manager All bills are current. I would suggest,as a standard business practice, that you have an independent audit done of your father's company, and just to satisfy yourself of the accounts we have been adminestrating for you."

"I will take that under advisement as they say. Is there something else that you need me for Mr Jacobs?"

"Only to advise you that our sevices, other than required by the law and your parents wishes, terminate on your birthday unless you wish to extend them."

"Again I think I need to think about that for a bit."

"Quite understandable. I shall check in with you again in a couple of days." He would seal up his briefcase and head out.

"Do you know anything about this guy?"

"My dad uses his firm for anything legal and from what I hear he is squeeky clean."

For the next two weeks my life consisted of physical therapy and I progressed from cruthces to a walker to a pair of forearm supports and finally to unassited. I was walking through a pair of parralel bars, when muscle memory took over and I swung myself up into a straddle and then shoulder roll before I felt hands grabbing me to keep me from going any further.

"What the hell Dennis?" Dana my therapist was looking at me like I had three heads.

"It just felt natural."

"It should have Den,you were really into gymnastics in school." Karl had come by yet again. He had been here almost everyday. "So when the hell are they going to let you out of here?"

"As far as I'm concerned after that he can go home tomorrow and I'll tell your primary that once you get back to bed."

"Geez, can I at least get back there under my own power?"

"If I say no you'll just wait until I am out of sight,so go for it."

Karl would see me safely back to my room and I would close the door and start to strip so I could take a shower. I was half naked before I even gave Karl a thought. I turned to him and the look on is face was one of want. I held a hand out to him and he came into my arms.

"God I've missed this."
