I jammed on the brakes.

"Are you fucking nuts?"

"Is that any way to greet an old friend?"

"Old friend my ass. I don't know you from a hole in the ground."

"What?"

"I don't know who the hell you are but before 2 weeks ago I don't remember a damn thing."

God I was getting tired of saying that.

"I...Denny...I.....really?"

"Really."

"Geez Denny, I'm sorry I had no idea. I just heard that you were home from the hospital and nothing else."

I fished out my phone and used it to take a picture of the guy and figured out how to send it to Karl.

"What are you doing?"

"Just bare with me a minute."

My phone rang with a text message.

"Shoot him, burn the remains and scatter the ashes to the four winds."

"You should leave,now."

"Aww come on Denny. I thought we patched things up a long time ago."

At that point I saw Karl come tearassing around the corner from the back yard.

"I fucking warned you Paul. If I ever caught you within 100 yards of Dennis I would turn you into the quivering pile of shit that you really are."

"Karl. I should have known you'd be around."

"Leave him be Karl. Paul, just leave, please."

"I'll leave, but not because I'm afriad of Karl. He could never take me on his best day."

The guy took off down the drive way.

"Tell me Karl."

"He's an oppurtunistic slimeball. He's conned you out of more money than I can count. Likely he was here to try and get his hands on some of your inheritance."

"Great. Do I know many people like him?"

"Nah,he's the only one."

"Thank the stars for that at least."

"Doesn't mean there won't be others like him. Do yourself a favor and any schemes that come your way,run them past Jacobs or through your own company at least before you commit to anything."

"Damn Karl I'm an amnesieac not a simpleton. Thanks, now go home. If anything comes up I'll call, but don't be waiting on me."

"You sure?"

"I'm sure."

Karl left the way he had come and I pulled the car into the garage and went into the house.

"Seems you can't keep out of trouble boyo."

"I have a feeling Mrs O'hanlon that the troubles have only started."

"Well will Mr Karl be joining you for supper?"

"No I told him to spend some time with his own family."

"Speaking of family. Do you mind if'n I spend Christmas morning with mine?"

"I insist that you take the whole day with them Mrs Ohanlon. I've already commited to spending the entire day with Karl and his family. Seems I used to spend a good amount of Christmas day over there before everything happened."

"Oh but I couldn't..."

"Yes you could and that's all there is to it."

"As you wish. Supper will be ready in about an hour."

"Thank you Mrs O'hanlon."

I started to explore the house in detail. I found slight dents in some of the woodwork and wondered just what had happened there. On the wall in my fathers study,I found marks with dates. My growth I assumed. The books on the walls here were mostly to do with economics. The ones I found in my bedroom were a lot of science fiction and fantasy. I had plenty of time to rediscover them while Karl was away at school.

I found a few trophies and ribbons from the gymnastics team. They didn't mean anything to me. Pictures of people whom I had no idea of who they were. All kinds of things that had no meaning to me. I wondered if I would ever remember. What was a Camp Montasa? When had I ever been to the Grand Canyon? What the hell WAS the mystery of the Grand Tetons?

Before I knew it Mrs O'hanlon called me to supper. Tonight it was baked chicken breast, mashed potatoes and green peas.

"Mr Karl told me you like your chicken skinless and boneless. I hope I got things right for ya boyo."

"It looks delicious and smells better Mrs Ohanlon. Thank you."

I soon finished my dinner and went into the family room to try a little tv. None of the shows had a whole lot of meaning for me. I found one that did attract my attention. It was a crime show and the characters seemed almost familiar. I let it run to the end.

"I'll be leaving now boyo. I'll see you in the morning."

"Good night Mrs Ohanlon."

I made it a point to go around and make sure all of the doors and windows were secure after she had left. I don't know why I did it,but it seemed prudent.

I went to my room and grabbed one of the books off of the shelf and settled down to read for awhile.

Along about 11pm,my phone buzzed with a text message.

"Sleep well lover." Followed by several heart emojis

"See you in the morning lover."

I finished the chapter I had been reading and turned out the light.

Next morning I was up and changed into my jogging clothes when my phone again buzzed with a text.

"Waiting on you at the corner."

"On my way."

I would head out just as Mrs Ohanlon would be pulling into the driveway.

"I'll be back in about an hour."

"Enjoy yourself boyo."

It would be down the road and Aaron came out of his driveway and we both went to the corner and joined Karl. There was little talk this morning as we were all concentrating on keeping a decent pace.

Down the street to the park and around the track. We were amongst a few more joggers this morning which was fine by me. We passed people and were passed by others. I wasn't quite as winded by the time we made it around the track and turned for home.

We were a couple of blocks from my house when a black and white pulled in front of us.I gave Karl a 'what the hell?' look.

"Morning fellas. Out kinda early aren't you?"

"We do this almost every morning officer."

"Then why haven't I seen you before?"

"Well I've been in the hospital for 6 months and Karl has been away at school. Don't know why you haven't seen Aaron around though."

"Do you boys have any ID on you?"

"I don't but I live just a couple of blocks up the street,so do Aaron and Karl lives around the corner. I'll be happy to show you some at the house,if you'll just tell me what is going on."

"We've recently had reports of a trio of joggers who have been going into houses and ripping off whatever they could quickly get their hands on."

Another black and white rolled up.

"Jack, I promise you these aren't the guys you are looking for."

Karl looked into the car.

"Dana....I mean Officer Pembrose, good to see you again."

"Hello Karl,Dennis and.....Aaron right?"

"Right."

"Well then boys sorry to have interupted your jog. Have a nice day."

"Not a problem officer. Sorry we couldn't be of more help, but we will all keep our eyes open."

"Thank you."

The first black and white left.

"Dennis.... Good to see you finally out of the hospital. Condolences."

"Appreiciated Officer Pembrose, but you should know..."

"I do know, so let it rest. Karl, you tell him I need to get back to work."

He also took off.

"Tell me what?"

"Just how we happen to know Officer Dana Pembrose. A story for after we have had breakfast if you don't mind."

Karl and I continued on to my house as it appeared I had to be patient;something I felt I rarely was.

Breakfast turned out to be pancakes. Not topped with maple syrup, but jam. And apparently not just any jam either. I caught sight of the bottle and it seemed to be specially made organic jam.

"Your idea or mine?"

"All yours lover."

"So eat up and tell."
