I raised the lid and right on top were the gold and onyx cufflinks I had bought for him a few years back. The money had come from what I had saved from my allowance, and what I had made from, of all things, a paper route. My first job. My father has always believed that those things that we had earned ourselves were the best, so yes I had jobs.

There were a couple of other sets of matching cufflinks and tie bars and a couple of rings; all of which I decided to keep. There was also a pocket watch which I remembered my father had told me was his fathers. That was a keeper as well, along with one other watch.

My mothers jewelry box I didn't touch. I knew I would never likely have a use for anything in there, but I didn't want to get rid of any of it either.

Then I was into the closets. I tried one of my fathers suit jackets on and found that the sleeves were a bit short and they were tight through the shoulders. I didn't know if I was done growing or not but I didn't see much sense in trying to have the suits altered. So I had to check with the lawyers on all of the specifics, but they were probably going to be donated somehwere. I knew that moms things were going to go the same way if not to the same place.

"Dennis?"

"In the master bedroom Karl."

He came to the door, but didn't come in.

"You want to be alone Den?"

"I'm about done in here for now. I figured I might as well get started. My house, I should be....what the hell?"

"What?"

"Looks like a safe. I didn't know dad had one,let alone what the hell might be in here. Better yet I've got no idea how to get into it either."

"The lawyers probably have the combination, but if they do why the hell haven't they given it to you before?"

"Hell if I know. I'll give them a call tomorrow. Now I'm wondering what is in there? All of the stocks and bonds and stuff like that are being held at the office."

"I've got no idea, but better not mess with it. Some of these things have a failsafe. So many tries and nothing can open it but a tech from the company."

"I may end up having to do that regardless."

"Yeah well Let's get over to the house for supper. Maybe your dad left something with mine and it has slipped his mind."

"Always a possibility I suppose."

We headed over to Karls, but not before I set the alarm, just in case.

"There you are. We've been wondering all afternoon where you were."

"Just clearing out the house a bit Gert. I figured it's about time I move into the master bedroom."

"There's no rush on that Dennis. I wouldn't push to get that done."

"I figure it's about time Gert now that I have my memory back."

"Yah know you still haven't told everybody else about that yet."

"I know Karl and I think I'll be remedying that before we head back to school."

"Good, I hate keeping secrets from friends, but I understand why you did it."

Stan came into the kitchen at that point and I figured there was no time like the present.

"Stan, did my dad leave you anything to give to me?"

"Not a thing that I can think of, why?"

"I've been going through the master bedroom and I found a safe. Even with my memory back, I've got no idea how to get into it."

"Sorry Dennis I've got nothing for you. The lawyers?"

"Calling them tomorrow, though I would have thought they'd have given me everything they had by this time."

"I would have thought so as well. What else does that leave?"

"Maybe the business?"

"Well I suppose that's always a possibility Dennis, but again why haven't they turned it over a year later?"

"I suppose Mr Bellows could well have forgotten that he has it, depending on when dad gave it to him in the first place."

"Always a possibility I guess. Well let's put that on hold for now and have some supper. Then what will you two be up to tonight?"

"Kind of think we'll be staying in tonight Stan. I've got the insurance agent coming over at some point tomorrow to look at the garage door. Beyond that I need to call both the lawyers and Mr Bellows and see if they know anything about the safe."

We had an enjoyable meal and eventually Karl and I headed over to my house for the evening. I hadn't started moving stuff into the master yet so we stayed in my bedroom. We didn't get hot and heavy, but I did stay spooned up against Karl all night.

5:45 and the usual routine started for us.

"Hey happy birthday lover."

"You know it completely slipped my mind. Thanks lover. You didn't go and plan anything did you?"

"Oh hell no. I know you don't like to make a big deal out of it."

"Thanks. Let's get this day in gear."

We were out the door and Roland was at the corner with Aaron waiting for us.

"Hey before we hit the road I've got a bit of news for you guys. I've gotten my memory back."

"That's great! Of course I may not think so once you start remembering all of the shit I've pulled on you over the years."

"Aaron, I've already recalled and you're safe......sorta."

The look that came across Aaron face was priceless and I knew I just had to let that one sit there for a while.

"Glad I don't have anything to worry about in that regard, but yeah it must be some kinda relief to have your memory back."

"It is, now let's get this show on the road. I've got that insurance adjuster coming hopefully this morning."

So down to the park we went and and got our laps in and then back to the house.

Mrs Ohanlon was there by this time and breakfast was quickly had and then Karl and I went and showered up.

Along about 10 there was a knock at the front door and I went to answer it.

"Mr Sawyer? Good morning, I'm Janice Miller and I've come to look at your door. From what I can see it seems a pretty straight forward job. You have your choice of contracting it out yourself or letting our contractors take care of it."

"I think I'd just as soon let your people take care of it, as soon as possible please."

"Certainly, just let me make a call."

She stepped away and took out her cell phone. I didn't even make an attempt to hear what was going on. She hung up and came back to me.

"There will be a team here tomorrow morning. They suggest that you have whatever vehicles that you intend on using for the day outside of the garage before 9am. Once they get started the doors shouldn't be moved for at least 24 hours."

"Not a problem and thank you."

"If you'll just sign this workorder we'll be all done and as I said they'll be here in the moring and should be able to finish the job in a single day."

"Thank you very much Ms Miller."

"Have a good day Mr Sawyer and happy holidays."

And with that she was off. I had expected it to be quickly taken care of, but not that quickly.

So now it was a phone call to the lawyers.

"Good morning Mr Sawyer and happy birthday as well. What can we do for you today?"

"Good morning Mr Jacobs and thank you. Is there anything that hasn't been taken care of from my parents things?"

"I don't understand Mr Sawyer."

"I've come across a safe in my parents bedroom. My memory has returned, but I have no idea about this safe."

"Well congradulations on your memory, but as far as I know you've been given everything in our posession. Let me take a look around to be sure and give you a call back."

"Thank you Mr Jacobs I appreciate it."

Karl and I just hung around the house and waited. Mrs Ohanlon made a light lunch for us and shortly after 1 the phone rang.

"I'm sorry to say Mr Sawyer that our files are complete. Any and all information that we were holding for you has been turned over."

"Thank you Mr Jacobs it was a long shot I guess. Though while I have you on the line, I want to donate my parents clothing. Are there any legal hoops to jump through on that?"

"No sir. Their possessions are yours to do as you see fit with. I do recommend that you get receipts for your donations for your taxes. I assume we will still be prepareing those for you?"

"Yes sir you will. I'll be sure to see that you get the receipts. Again thank you for looking."

"Not at all sir. Happy holidays."

"The same to you sir."

I hung up and Karl looked at me.

"Strike two?"

"Yeah. That just leaves the business to check out. That may take quite a while to go through my dads office if he didn't leave something with Mr Bellows. A little late to start that today and tomorrow I'm going to be keeping an eye on those contractors. Wenesday is Christmas eve and I assume we're going carolling again?"

"Yeah as far as I know we are, and sure as God made little green apples we'll end up at Rusty Acres again."

"Is that really such a bad thing Karl?"

"I suppose not. You aren't still thinking about buying the place are you?"

"I haven't completely given up on the idea, but I don't think so."

"Good. Now if you've got those contractors coming in the morning, I'm guessing that you're not going to want to go out tonight?"

"Well, we could as long as we're not out too late or get too wasted."

"Thought we might hit Mannys for a birthday libation or two."

"It's Monday, are they even open tonight?"

"Of course they're open. It just probaly won't be too very busy, depending on who's home for the holidays already. I think we got out earlier than most."

"Then sure why not. Why don't we take a bit of a nap then?"

"Want to call Aaron and Roland so we're all equally hurting in the morning?"

"Either one of them will try to make something of it if we do and I'd rather just not."

"Fine by me lover. Let's head for that nap."
