"You know?"

"Yeah I suspected and checked it out as you obviously did. I was hoping nobody else remembered."

"So the question is what are we going to do about it? I mean I'm sure the school checked him out before they hired him."

"So am I and I think the only thing we can do is keep our eyes open. He was acquitted after all."

"Yeah I suppose, but it still doesn't sit well with me. I think that it is going to be a long way to the all states."

"We can only take it one meet at a time Den, and keep our eyes open."

"Hey I didn't think to ask,is this a home meet or away?"

"Home meet again, so at least we get to sleep in our own beds."

"And I don't have to worry about getting buses set up again, just getting them to show up on game day."

"Ok. So mum's the word for now and we keep our eyes open."

"You got it Dana."

He got up and left the whirlpool at that point but I stayed for a while longer.

When I started to "prune up" I got out of the whirlpool and went and showered up and headed back to the dorm. It was a bit early yet so I had no worries about running into a heart on the door.

When I got inside I found that they had repaired the glass in our windows and from the outside it looked like. I checked around the room any way.

Pete showed up a while later.

"They're finally releasing information about the shooting. Looks like 3 dead 27 wounded,3 seriously. The list I saw didn't have anybody I know on it."

"One of the guys on the squad got hit in the leg and we won't be seeing him for the rest of the season. Anything about why it happened yet?"

"Not that I've heard."

"Seeing as our room took the heaviest of the damage, I sure as hell hope this isn't related to me."

"Hell Den you are not the end all and be all of the world dude."

"I'm not concieted enough to think I am Pete, but look at recent events. The whole thing with Larry, and now his dad, even though he was still in custody at the time of the shooting. There's even that clod from the frat...Kyle....Grant. He didn't sound like he would be one to forget stuff. I mean he got kicked off campus for crying out loud."

"That was months ago Den. Think he'd wait this long to try something?"

"Hell if I know, but it is possible."

"I suppose,no matter how unlikely."

"Well hopefully we'll find out one of these days."

I sat down and checked my email and there was nothing there but spam. So it was hitting the books until Karl came over for supper.

It was about 5 when Karl came knocking at my door and we went down to the cafeteria for our supper. After last night we sure didn't need to go off campus.

Nobody joined us this evening and the cafeteria was pretty well empty.

"I had a talk with Dana today."

"About, as if I really need to ask."

"He already knew and was hoping nobodyelse remembered. We decided they only thing for us to do was to keep our eyes open."

"Pretty much what you had decided to do anyway."

"Yeah, but now there are two of us, if not more. I can't think that we were the only ones to remember."

"You probably weren't, but I doubt like hell that anybody on the squad is going to put the whole season at risk by running their mouths."

"Probably not. I'm hoping now that it doesn't prejudice the judges as well. It's going to be hard enough to win the meets."

"Yeah I suppose something like that sticks in their memories even if the guy was acquitted."

We soon finished our supper and went for our walk around campus, had our good night kiss and I was back in the room. Pete had apparently gone out tonight.

I studied until I got my 11pm message and sent one back and Pete came in about then. It was lights out shortly after that.

5:45 and I was up and out again and Mr Bartlett was again waiting for us. Laps were completed, showers taken breakfast had and off to classes once again on this Friday.

Mr McEmbers was right on time. He did a quick search of the faces and was apparetly happy to see everyone present. Class went on as usual and we were soon out and I was on my way to Ethics. Mrs Flarety did the quick look around as well and was equally pleased. I guess none of the students in either class had been involved. A break and a quick lunch and then over to accounting to call it a day.

I again headed over to the rec center after accounting and this time I went to the apparatus room to work on my rings performance and my floor again. Dana was there and he spotted my for the ring work and I spotted him for his vaults. Neither one of us said a word about coach Warren as there were other guys around.

The coach was there and watching folks as they worked out and making notes it seemed. That was ok, but I had the feeling he was watching all of us just as closely as Dana and I were watching him.

I did a full run through of my floor excercise and when I landed my final run and the last few moves, the coach was right there.

"Here you go Mr Sawyer. You need to keep hydrated."

I caught the bottle of water and noticed that the seal had been broken.

"Thanks coach, but I don't really need it."

"And I think you do."

He was testing me,or so I thought anyway. I put the bottle down on the floor and walked over to the bucket where the water was cooling and got one that hadn't been opened and drank from it.

I was as good as an accusation and Dana saw it,along with everybody else who happeened to be there. The coach raised an eyebrow as if to ask if that was the way it was going to be.

In response I took another swig from the water bottle I was holding. The coach walked off.

Dana walk over to me.

"You might just as well have called him on it Dennis."

"He was the one pushing the issue if you were listening."

"Yeah I was and he did, but you didn't have to respond."

"But I did Dana. Coach wanted to know if I'd do it or not, hell he needed to know."

By this time the other guys were gathering around. They knew something was going down, but had no idea what.

"What the hell was that Sawyer?"

"The equivalent of a game of chicken or high stakes poker, I'm not sure which, and that's all I'm going to say about it Jack."

They all turned and looked to Dana.

"Between Dennis and the coach and not our business."

The guys mumbled about it but started going thier own ways.

"You know they aren't going to drop this Dennis."

"Probably not,but I'm not going to say a word to anybody. Now if they find out about it on their own, there's not a damn thing I can do aboout it."

"And you're not going to push them in that direction are you?"

"No of course not. But I would think that anybody with any kind of curiosity will be checking the coach out now. It wasn't that hard to find the information."

"I'm not looking forward to the next practice Dennis."

"Neither am I, but I've worked to hard to be put off by a little controversy."

"We all have Dennis."

"True enough. I'm going to hit the pool before the whirlpool. I'll catch you later Dana."

"Yeah sure."

I headed into the locker room and quickly changed into my bathing suit and hit the pool. Several laps later and I made my way into the whirlpool and after about 15 minutes I went in and showered up. I was about to leave for the day when Coach Warren called me into his office.

This was likely to be good. The door was closed.

"It's pretty obvious Mr Sawyer that you've made the connection to my past. Plain and simple, what do you intend to do about it?"

"As you say plain and simple, not a damn thing except to keep my eyes on you. I have to hope that the school did their due diligence before they hired you."

"Oh I can assure you that they did. It was a very uncomfortable 3 days of going over and over things repeatedly. Have you said anything to anyone else?"

"I have not, but I suspect that a few of the more curious ones will do exactly what I did when I recognized your name. The information wasn't all that hard to get out of the net. If confronted by the others I have no intention of either confirming or denying their findings."

"Then we have an agreement. You don't 'out' me and I won't 'out' you. Yeah I know you're gay."

"I've already told the team, even before I was given the alternates position."

"And they didn't go off the wall?"

"No sir they rather thought I had a lot of guts to admit it to them before some loudmouth on an opposing team did it for me."

"Was that the incident that was making the rounds a couple of months ago where somebody got spit on?"

"It is. The guy was on my high school team and when his college team showed up here to compete he was telling it at the top of his lungs. I figured the team should know well before hand so they could get thier heads around it before the meet and not during it."

"That took a lot of guts."

"I was only hosting at that point, but still that could have screwed with the guys heads and I wasn't about to be the cause of them loosing a meet. Did you hear about what the team did?"

"Do I really want to know?"

"They made it a point the night the guys arrived to do public displays of affection in front of the other team just to screw with the one guy. When the team showed up for breakfast the next morning the poor guy damn near lost it and it messed up his whole meet. He tried to get us censured. The other team captain stood up and told the judges that the guy beat himself."

"And your coach didn't suspend anybody?"

"He said if they ever tried anything like that again he would disband the entire team and forfeit the season."

"Damn right. So then how did you get to be an alternate?"

"Turned out one of the guys has curvature of the spine and the coach had to cut him. I got asked to step up into the alternate position."

"Well your stats are excellent and I watched you during practice Tuesday and out there today. I'm seriously thinking about kicking you up to a primary position."
