"That being?"

"Think back a few months. Did you see any of his buddies there during the trial? I sure as hell didn't. Dirk needs to know that there's somebody there for him that isn't going to have his hand out. He may not take over the dealerships directly, but sure as shooting is going to have soemthing to say about them."

"Den, Dirk has been such a jerk before, what makes you think he'll have changed in a few months?"

"I don't have any first hand knoweledge, but I can't think dealing with someone who has a brain tumor can be easy. I'm betting that there have been some significant changes in Dirk these last few months."

"You're letting yourself in for a big dissapointment Den. You always want to think the best of people and one of these days it's going to come back and bite you in the ass. I think I'll just stay here and work thanks."

There was a knock at our door. I opened it and it was Karl.

"I'm assuming you got the same email from Aaron that I did Den?"

"I did and I'm planning on going home this weekend."

"I figured as much. I suppose you already tried talking him out of it Pete?"

"Yeah and you see how much good that did me."

"Yeah I thought as much. We can be ready to leave by 4:30 which should put us home around 10. That's to late for the viewing but we can make the services in the morning."

"Yeah that's about what I figured. We going to stay at your house or mine,or both?"

"I think maybe both."

I grabbed my phone and dialed my house.

"Saywer residence."

"Mrs O hanlon I'm glad I caught you. I just wanted to give you a heads up that I'll be home Friday night. There's a dark blue suit in my closet, could you please see that it is fit to be worn and leave out for me?"

"Sure'n I can do that boyo. What's going on?"

"I'm sure you heard about Honest Charlie Chambers. I'm coming home for the services."

"Are you sure you're wantin to be doing that?"

"Yes I am sure. Why is everybody trying to talk me out of this?"

"We just be looking out for ya boyo."

"I appreciate that Mrs Ohanlon but I'm a big boy I can take the lumps if there are any. I'll be home around 10 and there's no need for you to wait for me."

"Right you are boyo. You behaving yourself I hope?"

"Now what fun would that be? Good night Mrs Ohanlon."

"Good night Boyo."

"So your car or mine Karl?"

"Yours would be more fitting for a funeral procession."

"Yeah I suppose so. Well I have homework to finish as I'm sure you do love."

"Oh yeah in spades tonight. I'll see you tomorrow lover."

WE kissed and Karl headed back to his dorm and I went back to my homework.

The rest of the week passed as usual with our morning runs and a couple of trips to the rec center to work out. Friday came and after my last class I headed straight for my car to wait for Karl. Just a little after four he came around the corner of my dorm and we were soon on our way home.

We hit a drive through for a quick supper and were on the road home. There were luckily no hold ups and we pulled into my garage right at 10.Karl had been relatively quiet all the way home and I knew something was bothering him.

"Ok love spit it out. What's eating you?"

"How Dirk is going to react when he sees us tomorrow. I'm afraid he is going to go ballistic on our asses."

"He may well do so Love but I still think I should be there. You can stay home if you want and I'll understand."

"Are you kidding? After the last fight you had with him at the arcade. I'm more concerned about you killing him. Prison bars do not a congegal visit make."

"I think I have enough control to avoid that Karl. So question still stands. You sleeping here tongiht or in your own bed?"

"My own bed if I need to get up in the morning. You had better at least come over and say hi before you crash. Bobby wouldn't forgive you if you didn't."

We went through the house and I rest the alarm so there wouldn't be any problems and we went through the back over to Karls house. They must have seen the lights go in at my place as the whole family was waiting for us in the kitchen. I got tackled after Karl.

"For crying out loud Bobby it's only been a couple of weeks."

"Yeah but I miss you guys."

"Well you had better get used to it because the next time we come home shouldn't be until Thanksgiving."

"But that's months away!"

"Sad but true Bobbie. Hey but it will only be another month after that and we will be home for a week for Christmas."

"You gonna be here in time for caroling Christmas eve?"

"I sure hope we can make it., and seeing as Christmas falls in the middle of the week this year I don't really see a problem."

"Dennis a word with you please."

"Stan you are not going to talk me out of this. I've been throught it Karl, Pete and even Mrs Ohanlon."

"Be that as it may,I wouldn't feel right if I didn't at least try,and to warn you that you may be letting yourself in for more than you bargained for."

"I appreciae it Stan, but like I've told everybody else, I'm a big boy I can take my lumps if there are any."

"I'm sure you can, just so you are aware that the possibility of those lumps is pretty damn good."

"Consider me warned. Now I believe those services are at 9am so I for one need to get some sleep. Karl I'll see you in the morning for our run. Should surprise the hell out of Aaron and Roland."

"I'm betting Aaron will know that we were coming home. He sent the email after all."

"Probably, Everyone have a good night. I suspect we will be back here by early afternoon, but don't wait anything on us please. Like it has been said almost anything can happen."

Karl went out into the backyard with me and gave me a kiss before we both turned in for he night.

5:45 and my alarm went off and I grabbed a set of jogging clothes. The blue suit I had asked for was hanging on the bedroom door, freshly cleaned and ready to go. I was out the door and headed up the street to the corner and there was Aaron waiting with Karl.

"Wait for me!"

Roland was on his way up the street.

"Well aren't you two a sight for sore eyes! Looks like college is agreeing with the both of you."

"You aren't looking so bad yourself Roland. Did you get yourself a job yet?"

"I did and like you suggested I'm with a party outfit. I'm now a planners assistant and should be planning parties on my own inside of a year."

"Way to go. Now let's get this run going. I have someplace to be this morning."

"You didn't come home just for Honest Charlies funeral did you?"

"No I came for Dirk. I don't think he has anybody he can count on and he is going to need that today of all days."

"Madre Dios Dennis you like to live dangerously."

"Hey I'd like to believe that you guys would have been there for me if I had been concious when my parents services were held. From what I saw before Dirk doesn't have anybody like that to be there for him. I know I'm likely to get my lights punched out but it is a chance I'm going to take."

By this time we were down the hill and to the track. We did our five miles and headed back towards our houses when a black and white came around the corner and slowed.

"Good to see you home Dennis,Karl."

"Good morning officer Pembrose. What can we do for you this fine morning?"

"Just hoping you don't plan anything......untoward for later on this morning."

"Not my intention in the least. I just want to show Dirk some support."

"Well I hope he is willing to take it. You guys take it easy."

The car would then pull away and we went on to our respective houses.

"I'll see you at 8 Karl."

"Right lover."

I went inside and showered and came out to the kitchen and made myself a little breakfast. I then went in and changed into the suit and went to the living room to wait for Karl.

Right at 8 oclock I heard him coming through the back door.

"Be sure and lock it Karl!"

"Yeah Yeah."

Karl came around the corner wearing a dark grey suit and I noticed that he had on the tieclip cufflink set I had given him for Christmas as well as the watch. They did look good on him.

"Well lover I suspect we had better get on our way to the church. No telling how big a turnout there is going to be."

"True enough and it's about a half hour to the church to begin with. Maybe a bit more with Saturday traffic."

"Then we had better get our butts in gear."

We were out the back with the alarm reset and down into traffic. Karl called out the directions as I had no idea where the place was. When we got there the parking lot was practically empty.

"Damn, I suspected he wasn't well liked, but I thought there would be more people than this here."

"It's still a bit early Den. There's probably more people coming."

"I should hope so."

We waited another few minutes before we made our way inside. The casket was closed, but we made our way up front and paid our respects. Dirk and is mother were not in the chapel yet so we went and took seats furthe back,in case other, closer friends or relatives showed up.

9am came and the chapel was still decidedly empty. The processional started to play on th organ and Dirk and his mother made their way to the fron of the chapel. Dirk was looking straight ahead and apparently hadn't noticed us.

It was also pretty obvious that I had been right as I couldn't spot any of Dirks so called friends in the chapel.

The service went on and it wasn't until the casket was being wheeled out, followed by Dirk and his mother, that Dirk even noticed us there.
