Karl and I were quickly up and made ourselves presentable and went out to the den where the Christmas tree was.

Bobby was again given the task of passing out the presents. Clothes predominated this year for all of us "younger" people. Stan and Gert ended up getting the usual things that adults get from their kids.

Soon enough we were all on our way out to breakfast. When we got to the IHOP we had to wait for a bit. Pete and Millie were there so we all sat together and caught up a bit. Millie was in line to be promoted to office manager where she was which seemed to make Pete a happy camper.

Our food was eventually delivered and quickly consumed and then we were on our way back to Karls house. Thankfully there were no incidents this year.

Gert and Connie went to work in the kitchen and the rest of us moved into the den and got ready to watch a bit of football. Christmas day wore on and dinner was served. This year it was a turkey with all of the fixings. Deep dish apple pie ala mode seemed to be the standard finish to the meal on this day.

We had all settled down after dinner for an uneventful night.

No such luck. Along about 11 all hell broke loose as the burglar alarm on my house went off and probably woke up the whole damn neighborhood. Karl and I were still up and we were both out the back door and headed for my house when we heard a car peel out from out front.

"What are my odds that was a 4 door black older model car?"

"Pretty damn good I'm thinking."

It was only a few minutes later that a black and white showed up at the front of the house. I purposely hadn't made a move toward the house. No telling what evidence I might have disturbed if I had.

It wasn't Dana Pembrose that pulled up, but it was a familiar face.

"Officer Carlisle. Sorry to get you out here tonight."

"Have you been into the house?"

"No sir haven't been anywhere except down the right side yard."

"Let me clear the place and then you can go in and shut that alarm off. Wait here please."

Another car pulled up and the officers flanked the house and made thier way around and finally came back out.

"Ok the house is clear. Looks like they were trying to get in through one of the windows. If you'd just stay away from the windows and shut that down please."

I went around to the garage and used the remote on my keyring to open the door and went into the house that way and shut the alarm down. I went to the office and started to run the camera footage. For the third time it showed the same figure, all in black and definately left handed by the way he was holding what tools he had. I burned a copy and gave it to officer Carlisle.

"Don't know what good this will do, but might as well add it to the collection that officer Pembrose has."

"Anything else you can give us Mr Sawyer?"

"Just that we heard a car peel out when we were coming around the corner. I had the same heavy sound that the car the other day had."

"Yes officer Pembrose filled us in on that prior incident. Do you have any ideas who this might be sir?"

"If I had you guys would sure as shooting be the first to know."

"Do you have anywhere else to stay tonight sir? We'd just as soon not have anybody in or around the house until the forensics team can take a look around that window."

"Not a problem. I'll be around the corner at the Hotlz residence."

"Very good sir. We're going to leave a car and guard here so nobody can interfere with the site."

"Thank you officer Carlisle. I hope the rest of your night is quiet."

"No more than I do sir. Good night."

Karl and I made our way back over to his house and had to explain what had happened. It was probably going to be a sleepless night for me as I was fairly well keyed up at this point.

"Comeon Den, try and get some sleep."

"How can you expect me to sleep? This is what, the third attack in 6 days? And why now? This kind of harrassment could have been done any time, except I wasn't here. Is this the way all of our time at home is going to be like? What happens if this nutcase decides to really escalate things? You're not safe, neither is Mrs Ohanlon or the rest of your family. Does it stop when we head back to school? Does it follow us back?"

"Lover if you don't calm down I'm going to slug you. You're going to work yourself sick if you keep this up."

"You'd think I'd be used to this kind of shit after Larry ....Larry? He said he wasn't done with me."

"Shit Den he's dead. You watched him die, hell you were there when they pronounced him."

"Doesn't mean he couldn't have set something up with someone else as a 'just in case'. Hell look at how Scott got in my face over Thanksgiving."

"You don't think Scott is behind this do you?"

"Possible I suppose but he's a good 6 foot plus and our apparent terrorist seems to be shorter."

"Doesn't mean he doesn't have an accomplice."

"I suppose."

"Den, at least come and lay down. You stay up all night and you'll be useless as shit if the police need anything from you tomorrow."

I went and laid down and Karl started to give me a massage.

"Relax babe. Things will work themselves out. You just got to have a little faith."

Eventually I must have fallen asleep as the alarm was going off. Yeah 5:45 had rolled around once again. Much as I didn't want to I was up and got into the jogging stuff and we headed out around the block and met up with Roland and Aaron.

"What in the name of hell was going on last night?"

"Somebody tried to break into the house. Guess they didn't count on such a good security system."

"Damn it that's the third time since you've been home."

"Kinda makes me wonder what this turkey might have in store for the rest of my time here? Anyway let's get this in gear."

We were down the road to the track and soon enough on our way back to the house. My head was on a swivel the whole time. We made it back to Karls without any problems. We showered and had breakfast and then I went over to my house to see when I might be allowed back in. Mrs Ohanlon was there and they weren't allowing her into the house either.

"What the devil be goin on here boyo?"

"Someone tried to break into the house last night. Officer, any idea how much longer before we can get in?"

"Just waiting for the forensics team to clear Mr Sawyer. It shouldn't be too much longer."

Eventually we were let back into the house.

"Karl, come help me search the office for the combo to that safe."

"Anything to get your mind off of the miscreant that keeps attacking you."

We went into the office and I went through the drawers of the desk and the small filing cabinet that was there. Karl started going through the books to see if anything turned up. Noon time came and we went out to the kitchen to have some lunch.

"Well that was a bust. Any other ideas Den?"

"I suppose we can check through my room. I don't remember dad giving me anything as a just in case, but that doesn't mean he didn't."

So, after lunch we proceeded to go through my room in the same fashion. Again we came up empty handed. By this time it was after 5 so I didn't expect to hear anything from the lawyers until Monday. The other alternative was at the company. They would all be gone by this time as well. So it looked like I had to stew for the weekend.

Mrs Ohanlon had headed home for the weekend and Karl and I had gone over to his house for supper and to spend the night. I had wanted to stay at my place, but Karl wasn't having any of it. He thought I would be safer at his house.

The night passed uneventfully and we were up for our jog with Aaron and Roland. We went down to the track and we were on our final lap when the ground erupted as if a line of gunshots was hitting it. We all scattered in the opposite direction and found what little cover we could behind benches and whatnot.

I looked around to see if I could see the shooter and anyone running away with anything that looked like a rifle, or a car on the road. There was nothing out of the ordinary to be seen.

Soon enough the police were on the scene, Dana Pembrose among them.

"Dennis you should get out of town."

"Is there any reason to believe that this jerk won't follow me?"

"Only that this didn't start until you got home. It's sure as hell no secret where you go to school, not after you took that all meet medal."

"Dana, I run away, and they win. You know I ain't gonna let that happen."

"I know, it was just a thought. Looks like the area is secure. Let me report in."

Dana had no sooner keyed his mike than another line of fire erupted to our left.

Everybody hit the dirt. There weren't any more shots fired but everybody was damn sure on the alert.

Dana went over to inspect the ground, hopefully to find some bullets or something. What he found was a wire and some electronis pieces.

"Son of a....... If I had to take a guess I'd say they were radio controlled squibbs."

"What?"

"The things they use in the movies to simulate gunfire. Not easy to come by. Our frined may have just screwed up. I'm betting ATF may well keep records on these things."

"So that means they might well be traceable?"

"You got it Mr Sawyer."

"Could somebody make their own?"

"Possible I suppose but that radio detonator might well be beyond a lot of folks."

"Karl, do we know anybody that it might not be beyond?"

"I can only think of one; Calvin Webber."

"Calvin from theatre arts?"

When I said it like that, it almost sounded logical.

"But Calvins got no beef with me that I know of."

"Yeah, but he IS pretty damn gullible. How hard do you think it would be for somebody to talk him into doing this on a bet or a dare?"

"Not that hard at all. There's something for you to follow up on officer."

"Indeed. Not much, but it may lead to something."

"Unfortunately, it's just as likely not to."
