"Why not Pete? What's going on?"

"Guess it seems to run in the family. Suz lost her maturnal grand mother to a heart attack as well as her great grandmother. She's scared to death for herself now."

"Guess I can understand that. But things are so much better than they used to be aren't they?"

"Yeah there's better treatement and diagnostics and all but Suz isn't letting herself recognize that right now. All she can see is her mother in the hospital."

"Well all you can do is be there for her Pete. Either she comes around or she doesn't"

"I hear you Den. God I hope she comes around."

"So how did she explain you in tow?"

"Just as a friend to keep her focused on the drive."

"Did that go over well?"

"Yeah her dad bought it. Not so sure about her sister."

"Worry about that later. You need to get her head back into college Pete."

"I've got a feeling that's going to be eaiser said than done."

"You going to be good for classes today?"

"Yeah I'll stumble through them."

"Then it is time we hit the bricks."

We all took off our seperate ways and finally the day would end as far as classes were concerned.

Karl showed up around 4 and we made our way off campus and to the police station. A couple of hours later and I had the Benz back and it seemed none the worse for wear. The brake line had been repaired and there was a note inside saying that I should have my rear tires replaced soon.

We stopped at the mall on the way back and hit the food court for supper before getting back to campus. Eventually we made our way back. Karl came across the quad from Cochran hall parking lot.

"Been a hell of a first year for you so far love."

"Yeah and its only been a couple of months. I hope the rest is a little less tumultuous."

"We can only hope. See you tomorrow love."

WE kissed and made out way to our own rooms. I booted the computer to check the bus situation. I was down to only 5 more reservations. This might be manageable after all.

I hit the books for the rest of the night and 11 came with Karls usual message and I sent mine back.

5:45 and we went through the whole routine yet another day. Classes finally over for the day and I was off to the gym for a scheduled practice.

I paid particular attention to my ring work today and also my floor excercise.

"Much better on the rings Dennis and the floor is looking pretty clean to me too. Keep up the good work."

I hit the whirlpool and the showers and then it was back to the room to wait for Karl to come over for supper. We stayed on campus tonight and just hit the cafeteria.

Life carried on as usual for the next week and when it came time I had 212 people signed up and ordered up 3 buses. Our final practice was held and the coach ordered us to rest for the next 3 days.

Classes were finally finished for Friday and I headed for my room to make damn sure I had everything I would need for the meet. We all headed for the gym where we boared the team bus and got ready to head out. There were a good number of people there to see us off, which was heartening in itself. I knew the team would feel that much better when these same people and others showed up tomorrow at the meet.

Everybody settled down and pretty much kept to themselves on the trip. It was about 2 hours into the ride when the bus lurched in a panic stop.

"Son of a bitch!"

That didn't sound good. Once everybody was sorted out,one of the guys was holding his wrist. Coach came back right away.

"Damn it I think it's broken Dave."

"Damn it damn it damn it!"

Even though there had been no crash that we had been involved in we had to wait around and the paramedics finally showed up and got to us. There were a few bruises but Daves wrist was indeed broken. Dave was going to have to be transported to the local hospital and that meant that the whole bus had to go with him. Eventually Dave got his wrist put in a cast and we were back on the road.

We eventually pulled into Pemberton about 2 hours behind schedule.

"Jeeze you guys haven't replaced this old cluncker yet?"

It seemed that the attitudes hadn't changed from last year. We got credentials and rooms all sorted out and we went for a late supper at the student union here as their cafeterias were closed by this time. Thier union was more like a country club than anything else. Gary and coach had been in a huddle almost since the time of the accident. They looked around and finally found me and came in my direction.

"Dennis, you're starting tomorrow."

"Coach Dwayne is the first alternate,he should be up."

"Dennis, we've talked about it and argued it for hours now. The plain fact of he matter is that you are better than Dwayne."

"It's still not right coach. What if I refuse?"

"Then you'd be done with the team, just that simple. You've worked too hard for that Dennis."

"Dennis"

I turned around to see Dwayne standing there.

"You are a lot better than me Dennis and I know it,hell everybody with eyes knows it. You're the best chance for the team to win tomorrow. I want you to go for it."

"You're sure Dwayne?"

"I'm sure."

It wasn't long after that we were shown the facility. No bleachers here. Oh no there were individual seats, and not just any seats. These were seats like you would find a really good theatre. There was a high tech score board, which was already set up with all of the teams names and coach made it a point to see that my name was changed for Daves.

We were finally shown to our rooms and what rooms they were. Wall to wall carpeting, subdued area lighting and beds with mattresses about twice as thick as the ones we had. The sheets were high thread count cotton. Yeah this school was really showing off.

It was far from time for our 11 pm messages but I intended to be asleep by then. So I called Karl.

"Hey love, wanted to call before I hit the sack. I'm starting tomorrow."

"How the hell did that happen?"

"Small accident on the road and one of he guys busted his wrist."

"But I thought you were the second alternate? Did more than one person get hurt?"

"Nope just the one. Coach and Gary made a decision. I made the argument that I'm the second, but Dwayne told me to go for it. That I'm better than he is and he knows it. So I'm in."

"I think the guys are going to go nuts when they find out."

"So don't tell them. Let it be a surprise."

"Ok love. I've got your list of riders and I'll get them all squared away with the buses. I'll be sure to get Gordon and Aiden there too. You get a good nights rest and give'em hell tomorrow. Love you."

"Love you more."

Gary had been in the bathroom during the phone call and came out at that point.

"You two really have something special don't you?"

"We do and I think I'm finally ready to commit to it."

"Which means?"

"I think I'll be getting married within the year, but for now that's a secret."

"What's a secret?"

"Exactly. Thanks Gary."

Pretty soon after that it was lights out.

5 am rolled around and I was up and a good hot shower and into my street uniform to go over for breakfast. We meant the opposing team for the first time, though they weren't very friendly. In fact to put it plainly they acted like their business didn't stink. I hoped that we would end up really beating these guys badly.

7am and we were off to the facility for our warm up. The bunch of us worked our way around the different pieces of apparatus. At 9 we vacated the floor to let the other team warm up. We all stayed in the locker room while they did. We weren't even permited to watch them even though there had been no such restriction placed on the other team. Coach was walkng through the locker room and stopped.

"Dennis,you ready for this?"

"About as ready as I can be coach. According to something I heard a while back we have a damn good record against these guys anyway."

"Yeah something like 47 to 3 I think it is. So I'm not too overly concerned, but we are starting with 3 new members this year, not including you. That's almost a third of the squad, and a couple of those meets were damn close."

"Way to get my confidence up coach."

"I'm not the least bit worried about you Dennis. Just get out there and do your best."

"Always coach."

He moved on to speak with the others before we had to get organized to hit the floor. But even before that happened Gary called us all together.

"Ok guys,we've got this meet in the bag,but let's not get cocky."

He stuck his hand out and all the rest of the team put their hands in as well.

"Do it honest, do it clean."

Everyone repeated it.

"Break on three. One, two three!"

"Break!"
