I finished getting myself together and was going to head for the dorm. I didn't get 10 steps out of the building before three of the guys from the squad were blocking my way.

"Why'd you get him kicked off the team Sawyer?"

"Yeah you want his spot?"

"First off guys, that was the coaches decision. I spotted a medical condition that has serious implications aside from it being dangerous for him to compete with it. No I do not want his spot on the team. I've said so to the coach and a couple of other guys on the squad."

"What kind of condition?"

"You'll have to ask Gary for yourselves. Not up to me to say anything to you guys. I felt a responsibility to tell coach because if something happened to Gary it would have been his ass on the line and probably the future of gymnastics here at the college."

"Gary was here on scholarship. What the hell is he going to do now?"

"That may well be an academic question. He may be looking at surgery with months of down time. I'm hoping I'm wrong, but he could well still keep up from home online. Now, you guys going to let me pass?"

The guys seperated and let me go on my way. I can't say as I blamed them much for being pissed at me,but it was for the guys own good.

I made it back to the dorm without further incident and went up to find Pete in our room.

"Hey Pete what up?"

"Same old shit. How was your day?"

"About the same, except I got a guy kicked off the Gymnatasics squad. I spotted something that could have serious implications and brought it to the coachs attention and he dismissed the guy on the spot. I kinda feel responsible."

"Hey you know you did he right thing don't ya?"

"The head says yes but the heart says no. I'll get over it. Karl and I are going to be headed out for supper. You coming with?"

"I don't think so Den. I need to get my head wrapped around this stuff before it gets to deep."

"I heard that. I'll leave you to it then."

I went outside and called Karl.

"Ready anytime you are. I'm out front of the dorm. We eating in or out tonight?"

"In I guess. It is cheaper than going out. I'm on my way over and we can hit the cafeteria."

Just a few minutes later I saw Karl heading across the quad. He took one look at me and knew something was wrong.

"What happened and to who?"

I told him all about what had happened after he had left.

"You did the right thing Den. I know it doesn't feel like it but you did."

"You got that right. I feel like I just ruined somebodies life."

"Bullshit! You may have just saved somebodies life."

"Maybe."

"Let's get some supper. You'll feel better."

We went inside and through the line and found a table. It wasn't to long before Gordon and Aiden found us.

"Mind if we join you?"

"Yeah why not."

"Jeez Dennis don't sound so enthusiastic."

"Sorry Gordon, just had a bit of a day and no I don't want to talk about it."

"Suit yourself. How has your day been Karl?"

"I've had a pretty good day. Got some time in at the gym and had a good swim."

"I suppose I need to get into the habit if I'm every going to put some muscle on."

Talk went on while we ate,but it was just the usual stuff. When Karl and I walked back outside for a little time together we noticed that something was going on at his dorm. Naturally we wandered on over.

"Sawyer you mother fucker! That's Gary up on the roof!"

"Shit! I've got to try and make this right Karl."

"You sure as hell do not. The guy can make his own decisions."

"His life seems pretty much destroyed to him right now. He can't be thinking straight. I'm going up love."

Before anybody could stop me I was into the dorm and climbing the stairs 2 at a time. I finally got to the roof to be stopped by a campus security guard.

"No you don't kid. He hasn't responded to anybody and I'm sure as hell not letting you drive him over the edge."

"I may be the one person who he will listen to. I'm responsible for him being out there. I've got to try."

"No way kid."

"Gary! It's Dennis can we talk?"

"Dennis? Why do you care?"

"Suffice to say that I do,please?"

"Just come around where I can see you."

I moved to the corner of the roof where he could see me.

"Gary, please listen to me. I know it may not seem like it right now,but there have to be other options to this."

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"Jumping isn't the answer."

"Is that what all the attention is about? Shit I come up here to think. I'm used to the wide open Dennis. Where I can look out and see for a couple of hundred miles in almost any direction. I can't do any serious thinking all couped up inside. You all thought.....?

"Yeah we did."

"Well don't I feel like an ass. Hey rent a cop,go get some coffee or something. Ain't nothing happening here."

Gary swung his legs around until he was facing the inside of the ledge.

"I'm just trying to figure things out Dennis. I don't know if I'm going to be able to stay here and finish school or if I'm going to be permanently laid up or what."

"I can't say about the rest of it,but if you loose your scholarship, well I know some people who know some people that might be able to swing something for you, even if it's continuing from a hospital bed online."

"Why would you stick your neck out like that for me? You don't even know me."

"Because from all accounts I'm lucky to be alive. My parents were killed in an accident which left me in a coma for months. I could just as easily have died that night too. It gave me a really different outlook on life. I'm determined to help when I can."

"Damn, I had no idea."

"Well there it is. Are you going to let me help where I can?"

"I'd be a fool to turn down any help I can get,and my momma didn't raise any fools."

"Then the first thing we do is get you an appointment with a good back man,and work from there."

"You ain't letting go of this are you?"

"Damn right I'm not. How about you get back inside and let all of these people get on with their evening?"

"Yeah I suppose they've had enough excitement for one night."

Gary got up and looked at me like he wanted to hug me. I offered him my hand which he took and then pulled me into a back slapping hug. I have to admit it felt good, but I would only slap him on the back as well. When he let me go he gave me another look, with a question in his eyes.

"Ask it Gary. You won't be satisfied until you do."

"Most guys would have fought me on that Dennis, you didn't. Are you....."

"Gay? Yes I am Gary, but that shouldn't change a damn thing."

"No it shouldn't. I'd still be glad to call you my friend Dennis."

"As I would you,but can we keep that a secret? I'm not ashamed of it,I just don't need the hassle regardless of school policy."

"You got it."

We got off of the roof and once Gary explained to the campus cops everybody disperesed and things got back to normal. I gave Gary my phone number and let him get back to his life and I got back to mine.

I meant Karl coming up the stairs as I was headed down.

"Let's hit my room while we're right here."

We went into his room, and his roomie was out.

"What the hell Den? Do you have a death wish or something?"

"Nope and as it turned out neither does Gary. He just needed some open space to think. Around here you can't do that at ground level."

"Neither one of you were ever in any danger?"

"I don't think so. Some folks just over reacted; me included I guess."

"If school doesn't kill me you will love. If you EVER do something like that again,I'll put you back in the hospital myself."

"I love you too."

"So now what?"

"Now I'm going to back Gary as best I can. By the way he knows I'm gay."

"You told him?"

"He kinda figured it out on his own, just by the way I didn't react when he hugged me. No it wasn't that kind of hug, just the back slapping kind of guy hug."

"Just as long as that's all it was."

"Jealous? I thought we were going to keep things loose? Not that I want to jump into bed with any guy who asks."

"Guess I'm just a bit insecure love. I thought I may have lost you forever not that long ago. I don't want to ever feel that way again."

"Weren't you the one who was telling me last year that you would understand if I tried being with other guys?"

"Yeah and look how that affected you when you were with Jason. I think you broke the land speed record getting here."

"I thought we were both secure enough to try someone different every once in a while. I wasn't the only one to...stray."

"So,does this mean you intend to take up some of the offers from the frat?"

"It may,but I seem to remember you getting at least one offer as well. I'm not going to kick about it if you aren't,which again, isn't to say I'm going to jump into bed with the first guy who asks."

"I can't stop you love and I'll admit I was flattered that one of those frat brothers even asked. Ok Den we're both free to try no strings. I know in the end it will be the two of us."

"I'm sure it will be to love, but we do owe it to ourselves to be sure don't we?"

"Yeah I suppose so. Now get out of here,I have work to do and if you're here that ain't going to happen."

We kissed and Karl saw me to his door. When he opened it Gary would be walking by. He looked at Karl, then to me and back to Karl.

"Lucky man."
