"I'm sorry Dennis, but I can't allow it. That would have the team taking a side in something that for all intents and purposes is political. That's something that college policy doesn't allow. Now if you have this forum and they want to speak up as individuals, well I can't stop that."

"I can't ask for more than that coach. Now to see if they're up for it."

I went back onto the floor and waited until it looked like everybody that was going to show up for the day was there and Dana got them together.

I once again explained what I had in mind.

"Now I won't bullshit you guys. The coach says it can't be done as a team thing, but you can step up as individuals. It could very well turn some people against the team, and make no mistake, you could very likely end up making yourselves targets."

"I think I speak for just about everybody Den, when I say that you've opened a lot of eyes in the last year. I'll stand up if this gets allowed."

"Thanks Dana. I still have to pass this past Dean Evans so it isn't a done deal yet. I'll try to let you guys know Tuesday for sure."

Karl and I headed out, but I could see where there was a lot of discussion going on.

"Think many of them will show up if this is a go?"

"No idea love, but they usually follow Dana so I'm thinking so. Stop at the frat as long as we are out?"

"Yeah might as well and see if there is any support there."

So it was a quick drive over to the frat and once inside an explanation to all of the guys there.

"Dennis, I can't stop anybody who wants to participate on their own, but I can't put the frat behind this. There's too much of a chance it will backfire."

"I understand Kurt, and I still need to get the Deans approval before I'll go forward with this. I'll let whoever is interested know as soon as I can, but I doubt like hell it will be before late tomorrow after I see Dean Evans."

"I wish you luck Denny. I'm thinking you sure as hell are going to need it."

"I'll take whatever I can get Kurt."

Karl and I were back on our way to the apartment after that. What time we had left between now and dinner we devoted to schoolwork and soon enough we heard Paul and Cam pull in.

We were downstairs and helping to set the table and soon enough were seated for supper. Dinner was rather quiet tonite and before we were going to get up from the table Mr Casatanza passed out remotes for the new security gate.

"It should be pretty much done by the time you boys get home from classes tomorrow."

When we headed up stairs, Cam and Paul started up after us. Karl noticed but didn't say anything so neither did I.

"What's on your minds guys?"

"We've been thinking about that idea of yours and well, we think it's a bad idea Den. It calls to much attention to the gay population. Now I have no frigging idea how large that population is on campus but we're doubting it will make you popular and may even draw a bigger target on your back. We'd like you to forget it."

"I haven't gotten permission to do it yet, but I think I need to at least put the idea to Dean Evans."

"I didn't think we could talk you out of it Den. We'll stand behind you, but we won't take part in the forum."

"Understood. Still see you in the morning?"

"Oh hell yeah. That one is already out there, beside, there's safety in numbers."

"See you guys in the morning."

Paul and Cam left at that point.

"Can't say as I blame them Den."

"Neither can I. They're both kinda new to being gay so maybe aren't secure enough to stand up yet."

It was back to work for another hour or so and then we crashed in front of the tv and were off to bed.

Monday morning and we were at it once again. Our laps this morning were both quiet and uneventful and Karl and I were back to the apartment and showered, changed and fed. We were on our way out the door when I remembered to grab the remote for the security gate.

"Don't forget your remote lover."

"Damn I would have Den."

I dropped over to the admin buliding before class and got an appointment to see Dean Evans after classes.

Classes which seemed to drag on forever today. Mr McEmbers stopped me on my way out today.

"How are the troops holding up Dennis?"

"Karl and I are hanging in there, but I can't say about anybody else. I've got an idea that I'll be presenting to Dean Evans later about having an open forum."

"Could help I suppose, but it could just as easily backfire and presents an oppurtunity for open confrontation."

"Which is why I'm going to pass it in front of the Dean instead of just running with it. If he thinks it's too much of a risk I'll drop it."

"Sounds reasonable enough to me Dennis. Just be careful. Now I have another class."

I headed over to the student union for my lunch, keeping my eyes open all of the way. I got a sandwich and drink and headed outside. I was sitting there eating when of all people Jack from the squad sat down beside me.

"What up Jack?"

"Just wanted to talk to you about this forum thing. You really think it will do more good than harm?"

"I do. I think a lot of people are operating with a lack of information. Making any decision or value judgement without any kind of facts or information is never a good thing."

"Yeah I guess so. Well good luck with it Dennis. I don't think I can stand up there with you, but I want you to know you at least have my support."

"Understandable jack. Take it easy and I'll see you at practice."

Jack took off and I finished my lunch. Pete stopped by before I was off to Risk/Rewards.

"Gordon told me what you're up to Den. Are you sure you want to do this? You're going to make yourself one hell of a target."

"Yes I'm sure I want to do this, but it isn't a done deal yet. I still need to speak to Dean Evans about it."

"After last year,I'd have thought you had enough of being a target."

"So maybe I miss the feeling. Pete I have to try something before this turns into all out war. It would tear the place apart and sure as hell wouldn't do any of the students any good."

"I hear ya Den, just not sure this is the best way to do things though."

"I'm open to suggestions Pete, but I haven't heard any."

"Neither have I. I need to get going. We all need to sit down at some point."

"I'll talk to Karl and let you know."

Pete took off and I was shortly on my way over to the final class of the day.

Risk/Rewards also seemed to drag on forever today. When it was done I headed back to the Admin building.

"Dean Evans will be with you shortly Mr Sawyer."

"Thank you Mrs Humboltd."

So I waited.

After a bit the inner office door opened.

"Mr Sawyer, what can I do for you today?"

"I had an idea but wanted your approval before I put it into play."

I explained the whole idea to the Dean.

"Dennis I realize you want to be proactive about this without being confrontational. I can't approve this plan. It offers too much oppurtunity for just that confrontation you wish to avoid."

"I'm certainly open to other ideas sir, but I haven't seen or heard of any forthcoming."

"Neither have I Mr Sawyer. There haven't been any reported incidents in the last couple of days, so I'm hoping my editorial has done some good."

"As long as I am here, is there anything to report from that list I gave you before, or from any information those two guys you sent home?"

"Nothing that I am willing to share at this point Mr Sawyer."

"Any word on when the arbitrator for the frat issue will be here?"

"He has yet to forward his schedule."

"Then I guess there's nothing further Sir."

"I know it must be frustrating Dennis, but hang in there. When is the next meet?"

"Just under three weeks I think, against Ashton College if memory serves."

"Well good luck with that Mr Sawyer if I don't see you before hand."

"Thank you sir."

I made a quick trip over to the frat after that and told them that the idea was a no go. I could take care of the team and others tomorrow.

Then it was back home and I damn near ran into the security gate. I used the remote and made sure the gate closed behind me once I was in.

I got upstairs and started supper and Karl rolled in not that much later.

"Well?"

"Dean Evans shot it down altogether."

"So now what lover?"

"Now all we can do is sit back and hope for the best until something else happens."

"And how long do you think that will be?"

"Honestly, I have no damn idea. Unless something untoward happens on campus, or off for that matter, I expect the next trigger would be if the arbitrator found in favor of the frat. If that happens I'm expecting nothing less than civil war."

"If that happens I'm betting Dean Evans and the administration goes full martial law on campus."

"I don't doubt it in the least Den. It will make for a miserable second half of the year."

"At the very least. I talked to Pete today. He wants to get together at some point. We haven't seen a lot of him this year."

"Well he spends all of his time with Susan. I mean we know she isn't homophobic, but she really doesn't seem to want to hang with us either."

"Can you really blame her? If the other guys had girlfriends maybe, but she reallly doesn't have anybody to talk to when we're all together."

"Yeah I guess not."

Supper was had and then we setteled down to a bit of school work. I checked my email before I shudown for the night.

There was one there from Bob Watson of the school paper.
