I proceeded to tell Karl about my evening out with Pete and that we would be joining him at State in the fall.

"Damn I'm sorry about the car,but glad to know you will be joining me up here in the fall. Hell I'm even glad Pete found a way in. So you having them throw the book at Dirk?"

"Damn right I am. Daddy isn't buying him out of this one. Pete and I are heading home. Sleep well, love you."

"Love you too sleep well."

We were in the taxi when Pete finally spoke up again.

"Dennis that was the third or fourth time somebody has refered to Dirks daddy not buying him out of it. Just who the hell is his dad?"

"Honest Charlie Chambers"

"As in Chambers Auto Mall? That Chambers?"

"That Chambers."

"Shit Den are you sure you want to take him on?"

"It's what the lawyers are paid for Pete. I'll have to call them Monday and get them ready."

"This is one fight I don't envy you Den. I've heard he will do anything to protect his family."

"I've heard the same thing and if it were something little like a fight I probably wouldn't kick, but intentional destruction of private property is just pushing it too far. I'm pretty sure I know what I'm getting into. Karl filled me in after my last encounter with Dirk. From the sounds of it Mr Chambers isn't going to be around that much longer. Better Dirk learns to stand on is own two feet now than after his dad is gone."

"That's pretty cold Dennis."

"If I could remember my own father I might feel differently Pete, maybe someday I'll be able to empathize but right now I can't."

I saw the look that came to Petes face in that instant.

"Don't go there Pete. You know I don't hold you responsible."

"Intellectually yeah I know but gut level I still feel responsible."

"Damn it I'm sorry Pete I didn't mean it to sound that way."

"I know Den,don't worry about it."

"Well here you are. I'll see you when I see you."

"Yeah you take it easy."

I went on home and to bed.

The next morning after jogging I came into the house to hear the phone ringing. I had a strong suspicion who it was calling so I let it go to the machine.

"Ok Sawyer, let's talk turkey. I'll foot the bill for restoring your car if you call off the police. You know where and how to get hold of me."

I got on the phone to Mr Jacobs private number.

"Mr Jacobs I hate to ruin your Saturday, but could you come by the house in about an hour?"

"Sure but what's up?"

"I'll explain it all when you get here if you don't mind."

"Sure thing see you in an hour."

I quickly showered and got some coffee going and grabbed a little breakfast.

Just an hour later there was a knock at the front door and I went and let Mr Jacobs in.

I explained to the whole thing to him and then played the answering machine for him.

"I take it Mr Sawyer that you want to see Dirk taken down a peg or two?"

"I do. Now I realize that it is up to the City attorney to press charges as this is a criminal case. I just want to cover my own backside in the process and if there is a civil suit to be made protect that as well."

"Oh there's a civil suit for damages if the city attorney doesn't file for them for you,and I'm pretty certain that he will after I have a discreet chat with him. Don't acknowledge any of Mr Chambers calls. If he comes to the house ask him to leave and then call the police if he doesn't. Should things escalate beyond that, and from what I've heard they may, then we go for restraining orders."

"You've heard that the senior Mr Chambers has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain cancer?"

"I have and that can make him even more unpredictable."

At that point the phone rang again and the caller ID told me it was Mr Chambers again. I let it go to the machine.

"Listen kid don't keep me waiting. Grab this or things could get.....complicated."

"Can you get a restraining order based on that?"

"Easily. You want seperate ones for father and son?"

"Absolutely and cover the offices too if you can. I don't remember seeing anything with their name on it there but I'll have Mr Bellows check on Monday."

"Good idea. If there is anything I would suggest that you sever ties as cleanly as possible. I'm going to go pull in a couple of favors and get those restraining orders put into effect asap. I'll let you know when those are in effect."

"Thank you and again sorry for spoiling your Saturday."

"Don't you worry about that at all. This is what we're here for."

I wasn't about to put anything past Charlie Chambers so I started making phone calls. I warned Pete and his mother to be on the lookout as well as Stan,Aaron,Roland and even Mrs Ohanlon.

Along about 2 in the afternoon there was a pounding on my front door. I grabbed a baseball bat that I had positioned near the door just in case.

"Come on kid I know you're in there let's get this taken care of now."

"Mr Chambers I suggest that you take your offer and leave. I've already dialed 911. I'm just as prepared to see this through as you are to sweep it under the rug. You can't protect Dirk from himself forever.

I've filed for restraining orders for both you and your son. I suspect they will be in place shortly if they aren't already. Meanwhile you are trespassing on private property and you are being asked to leave immediately."

"This ain't over kid."
