It was late on a Saturday and I so wanted to call and get as much information as I could. It would have to wait until at least Monday.

At that point I felt Karls arms come around me from behind.

"Don't get your hopes up love, not until they've checked things out."

"I know Karl, but I'm so hoping they find him."

"I know Den and I'm hoping they do too, and that he'll be alright with us. I know it would break your heart to find him and he not be good about it."

"Probably, but I'd at least know he was there."

"Worry about it later lover. Come sit and relax for the evening. We've got a drive tomorrow."

"How the hell am I suppose to relax knowing that they have information?"

"OOOOOOhhhhhh I can think of a couple of ways to get relaxed."

"That may serve to tire me out lover, maybe even distract me for a little while, but I doubt it will relax my brain."

"Then I've got nothing for you lover, unless we just get shitfaced."

"That's never been an answer Karl and you know it."

"Then I guess there's nothing to do but lock up and try and get some sleep."

"It's still light out. Too damn early to sleep. Hell we haven't even had supper."

"An I'm guessing that you really don't want to go out tonight either?"

"Not really. Maybe a couple hours of tv to fog the brain a little and I'll be able to get to sleep."

Seeing as it was the weekend we went over to Karls house for supper and filled them in on what we were going to do. It was then back to my place for that couple of hours of boring tv.

Sunday morning and we went out and did our jogging and then breakfast was had over at Karls house and we told his parents that we see them when we got back, however long it took.

By mid afternoon we were pulling into Pauls driveway. We had already figured out where I should park. We were no sooner pulled in than Paul was out there to greet us.

"That was a damn short summer."

"What can I tell you Paul, there's been a problem and I need to get it sorted out."

"Yeah you and who knows how many others. Dad hears things remember? A lot of the professors are really pissed that they have to go back in and sort through all of their classes by hand and resubmit the grades."

"So I wasn't the only one?"

"Not from the rumors dad hears. Seems like the whole freshman class and a good portion of the rest of the school got scragged."

"The Administration must be going apeshit."

"Since late Friday afternoon when the first calls came in. The computer guys have been at it all weekend from what dad hears and they're still over there scratching their heads from what has been heard."

"Sounds like whatever happened, or was caused to happen, was fairly sophisticated if they haven't a reason yet."

"Hell if I know Al, computers are not my forte. Computers......shit! Larry said he wasn't done with me. Do you think he could have planted a digital timebomb in the system? He must have had access through my system when he hacked it."

"Not my forte either Dennis, but I know someone, who knows someone, if the college wants the help."

"I'd say get your someone on standby Al. I'll ask when I speak to Dean Evans in the morning."

"If you can get anywhere near campus tomorrow Den. They're expecting to get swamped by parents and students."

"Yeah I figured, which is why we came up tonight."

"Yeah well regardless, mom and dad are expecting the three of you for supper tonight."

"That's nice of them Paul, but not neccessary. Thank them for us."

"Dennis, you don't understand. You simply don't refuse my mother if you want to live here in peace for the next two years."

"What time is supper?"

"Oh you'll know seeing as we will be eating el fresco."

He pointed over his shoulder to the patio of the house where a table was already set for us all.

"Think we'll just go up and relax until then."

"Should be all ready for you. I went up and turned the air on a couple of hours ago. The cable is hooked up and I put a quart of milk and a 12 pack in the fridge and a can of coffee on the counter."

"Thanks a lot Paul. We'll see you in a couple of hours."

The three of us trooped upstairs and went to giving the place a good once over. The appliances were all in and Pauls dad had set us up with a nice flat screen. It was also easy to see where the internet connections had been set up. Karl and I went in and checked out the bed and it was two full size that had been pushed together to make one good sized bed.

A couple of hours later there was a knock on the door.

"Supper's ready guys."

So we trooped on down to the patio where we met Mrs Castanza for the first time. We sat down to supper and what a supper it was. Minestrone soup and a fresh garden salad for starters which was followed by veal paremesean and a side of spaghetti, and finished off with cannoli, all of it make from scratch if I were any judge.

"I think that meal will last me a couple of days Mrs Castanza. It was delicious, thank you very much."

"You boys are most welcome and you are expected every Sunday for as long as you stay here."

"It's appreciated, but not necessary."

"Do either of you boys know how to cook?"

I looked at Karl and he looked at me. Obviously we didn't.

"I will enough to get us by when we move in."

"Oh yes I'm sure. Microwave food that is all chemicals and the such. Under my roof you will have at least one good wholesome meal a week and there'll be no argument about that!"

I started to say something when Paul held his hand up.

"Don't even try Den, you'll loose."

"In which case I shall surrender gracefully. Now, at least let us help clean up."

"You may help clear the table but beyond that it is my work."

"Far be it from me to argue."

We helped get everything back into the kitchen and then the three of us headed back up to the apartment. It was a couple of hours of tv as well as making inroads into the 12 pack, and then it was to bed.

There was only the front door to worry about when it came time to secure the place for the evening, and then we were off to bed, while Al unfolded the futon and made it up for himself.

When Karl and I woke up in the morning the smell of coffee was already in the air. The shower was small enough that Karl and I had to take turns getting showered this morning. We were soon enough ready and had our coffee and then we were out the door and headed for campus. They were turning people away at the main gate but becuase I had my parking sticker still on the car I and a few others were allowed in.

We made our way to the admin building and then to Dean Evans office. It wasn't open yet and we happened to be the first ones there. We were joined by several others before the Dean got there. Even before he went into his office he addressed the group of us.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I really don't have anything to tell you at this time other than things are being investigated."

That seemed to satisfy most everybody. The Dean saw that I wasn't so easily satisfied.

"Come on in Mr Sawyer, Mr Holtz."

We followed the Dean into his office.

"The IT department is going through every line of code in the machine. Beyond that I don't know what to do and apparently neither do they."

"Dean Evans, I've been in contact with my boss and there is help available if you want it."

"At this point Mr Goulding I'm sorely tempted to take that help, but I have to check with the Board of Governors first. Dennis, other than your grades, what are your main concerns?"

"Can this lead to the all states being invalidated and will it keep me from being on the team in the fall?"

"To the best of my knowledge while the investigation is still on going they can't use it to invalidate the all states and as far as your being eligible for the team in the fall,it should well be cleared up by then. All of the professors are at this moment getting all of their records together to resubmit their grades. Even if we have to do it all manually or farm the project out, we will get updated grades issued within the month I hope."

"Is there anything we can do to help?"

"No there isn't, except maybe talk to the people that are gathered at the front gate, though I doubt they will listen to you anymore than to the statements that have already been issued."

"As much as I hate the press, if asked I'll tell them what you've told me. One thing I did want to say,I'm betting that if this was intentional, there's going to be something pointing to me. I'm sure you remember the whole thing with Larry Brown last fall. The last thing he said to me was 'I'm not done with you yet.' This may have been a delayed attack of some kind."

"I'll keep that in mind Dennis. Now please let me get back to putting out fires."

"Yes sir."

We got up and made our way back to the car.

When we got to the main gate we were stopped outside by all of the media. I apparently had been recognized.

"Mr Sawyer! What do you know about the grades situation?"

"Only that there is an on going investigation and they hope to have the situation resolved as soon as possible."

I inched the car forward until I was clear of them and then headed back to the apartment.

"So do we hang around or head home?"

"I'm for heading home Den. I doubt like hell there is really anything we can do here."

I turned to Al.

"He has a point Dennis. If the Dean wants our help he has my number and Stimsons as well."

"Then make sure everything is turned off and let's hit the road."

We checked through the apartment, while Al stripped the futon and put things right, loaded our stuff into the car, told Mrs Castanza we were leaving, and hit the road.

We were about half way home and had pulled off to get a bit of lunch. We were seated in a booth when my phone rang. The caller ID said it was Pete.

"Hey Pete."

"Dennis! What the hell am I going to do!?!?"
