"Do us both a favor Bob either take off or shut up."

Bob just stood there beside me as we were approached.

"Mr Sawyer, Tom Hastings channel 9 sports. What have you to say about this complaint that is being sent to Kilbride?"

"Mr Hastings, if you knew me at all you would already know the answer to that question. No comment."

"There are no circumstances that you know of to justify this complaint?"

"I see. Ok save it guys. Anything to say off the record Mr Sawyer?"

"Ok, we're out of here."

The team turned around and left us alone.

"Damn Dennis this is getting serious."

"Seems like Bob, but you damn well know I've been through worse. So, you not going to write about this whole thing?"

"I could but I won't. From the way you and the dean and the administration are reacting, I've a feeling I'd only be playing into Kilbrides hands if I did."

"Sounds about right to me. Take it easy."

"Later Dennis. Try and not be contraversial for a while please?"

"Making no promises."

I went and checked the car and then headed back to the apartment for the weekend.

"We doing anything this weekend Den?"

"I don't know about you, but I'm going to try and keep as low a profile as I can. I got approached by the local tv station today over the whole Kilbride thing."

"Sounds like they're trying to make more of it than it is."

"Somebody sure as hell is, and the more it drags on the less I'm thinking it is Kilbride feeding it. In the long run they come off looking bad no matter what."

"So what are you thinking?"

"I don't know what I'm thinking at this point. Really anybody with any kind of stake in the all state could be feeding this thing just to get everybody else off track. Could it be another team? Sure Could it be illegal gambling interests? Also a possibility, though I'm still doubting Andros is behind it if it is."

"Why are you so doubting that it could be Andros?"

"Running that whole energy empire in Europe has to be taking damn near all of his time. Any time he has left over has to be put into other things to keep his sanity I would think, especially as getting involved in this again would be kind of 'baiting the tiger.' "

"You mean they'd be looking for his hand in it?"

"Yeah and that is attention I'm betting he really doesn't want as given the oppurtunity he can still be extradicted."

"Yeah, not holding my breath for that to happen."

"Neither am I lover. Supper will be ready in 5."

We ate and got things cleaned up and then just crashed in front of the tv until bedtime.

Saturday and we were up and out for our jogging. Luckily there weren't any media waiting for us and the guys didn't press for any information either, hell they alreaady knew it all anyway.

I stayed on campus and hit the apparatus room and did a complete workout. Dresmire was the end of the month and I was going to be ready for them.

Once I hit the pool and the whirlpool, I headed back to the apartment and grabbed some lunch.

"Anybody try to pump you for info after I left?"

"Nope and I'm glad of it. Just going 'no comment' all of the time is starting to wear thin, especially with the complaint hanging out there."

"Yeah, but you don't want to say the wrong thing and get yourself sued either."

"True enough so it's 'no comment' and I'll have to live with it."

"So, you want to go out to eat tonight or just lay low?"

"Let's go out. We could just walk over to Tony's. Not like we're likely to run into anybody there that will want to press things."

"I was thinking Riskins, but Tony's is fine too."

"Let's wait until its time and then decide."

"Fine by me."

I settled into some book work for the next couple of hours.

Along about 5 Karl spoke up.

"Well what do you think, Tonys or Riskins, or even Rons. We haven't been out there in a while."

"Let's hit Riskins. We're less likely to run into anybody from school there."

I went in and changed into a better set of clothes than what I had been bumming around in. Karl was already dressed and we headed out.

We had to wait for a table tonight, which was unusual. We finally got in and were seated. Our waiter was someone we hadn't seen before and seemed extremely nervous. When he filled our water glasses he got water all over the table and nearly got us as well.

"Damn it! Sorry about that. Good evening. I'm Albert and I'll be your server tonight. Ummmm can I get you a before dinner drink this evening?"

"No thank you. Albert is it? Take a deep breath and relax."

"Easy for you to say Mr Sawyer. You're about the closest thing this town has to a celebrity."

"Oh hell. Just remember Albert celebs still put their pants on the same way you do."

Which did at least get a bit of a smile from the guy.

"I'll have the New York Strip steak, medium, baked potato with lots of butter no sour cream. Chef salad with vinegette. Karl?"

"Make it two but I'll have thousand island on my salad please."

"Very good sirs. I'll have your salads out in just a moment."

Dinner went along just fine after that. We finished and headed for the car just to have a bunch of flashes go off in our face. The papparazzi had arrived.

Karl and I both kept our mouths shut and just made our way to the car. We proceeded to give it a quick once over despite the cameras and then got on our way.

"I wonder who ratted us out?"

"Probably Albert. Just about everybody else is used to seeing us out here."

"Damn it Den, I hope to hell this whole thing dies down soon."

"No more than I do believe me."

We got back to the apartment without any difficulty and were upstairs to find a note taped to our door.

"Don't touch it Karl."

"Why not? How can they bobbytrap a piece of paper?"

"Contact poison for one, but other than that there might be fingerprints on it."

"You really are off the deep end Den."

"Maybe but better safe. Hell we're still checking the cars aren't we?"

"Yeah we are, but I think that's more from habit at this point."

I took a good look at the lock and couldn't see any sign that anybody had tried to pick it. I went into the apartment and right to the kitchen and got a pair of rubber gloves. I then took the note down off of the door and brought it inside and unfolded it.

Give it up. The shit is only going to deeper from here.

"I'm betting I'm not the only one to get one of these."

I grabbed my phone and dialed Dana.

"What's up Den?"

"I just got home to find a note taped to my door telling me the shit is only going to get deeper from here and I should give it up. I'm betting some others are going to be finding them pretty quick. Get on the horn an tell then to handle them carefully. I don't know that there is anything on them, but there damn happy well might be fingerprints."

"Dennis you are out of your fucking mind. I... hold on I've got another call."

I waited for Dana to get back to me.

"Dennis, one of the other guys from off campus just called. He got the same note. Why do I have the feeling I'm going to be getting more calls?"

"For the same reason I had to call and give you the heads up. Somebody is out to see that we either don't make it to the all state or go in there in such a funk that we don't do well."

"Kilbride do you think?"

"At this point, I think Kilbride is being used by somebody else. The season they've had they can't really expect to do well at the all state,if they even get that far."

"You think it is the same character from last year?"

"I'm doubting it, but it could well be some of his friends."

"Hold on a sec. Somebodies at my door........ Half the team is here with similar notes Denny. I have to get in touch with the coach. I'll let you know what happens."

"Ok Dana, I'll be waiting for word."

I hung up.

"Word on what Den?"

"I called it and about half the team is at Danas door right now with similar notes. He's going to call coach, who I suspect will call Dean Evans. From there I've got no idea."

"Going to give Stimson a heads up now?"

"Once this latest gets around, I'm betting I won't have to."

"You think he's been monitoring since last year?"

"I'm thinking that after the whole thing with Crookshank that he might be yeah. Maybe just hoping that Andros is just egotistical enough or dumb enough to try it again; which I'm still betting against."

"So you going to back down? Hell do you think anybody on the team is going to back down?

"I'm doubting it like hell. They've all worked to hard this season. I think the only way to keep us from going for it will be to disband the team. I can't see the college or the coach doing that."

"Den, you always seem to be at the center of things. What if they ask you to leave?"

"I'd hate to, but I'd sure as hell have to think about it."

Which is pretty much what I did for the next couple of hours, with Karl holding me tight.

"We'll get through this together lover."

"I'm sure we will one way or another Karl."

My phone buzzed with a text message.

Team meeting 10 am rec center.
